Frederick Douglass, a former slave and famous abolitionist, wrote My Bondage and My Freedom in order to prove he was a slave before being an amazing orator and also to prove the power knowledge has when it is used precisely. The Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass shows the imbalance of power between slaves and their masters. In his book, Douglass proves that slavery is a destructive force not only to the slaves, but also for the slaveholders. “Poison of the irresponsible power” that masters have upon their slaves that are dehumanizing and shameless, have changed the masters themselves and their morality(Douglass 39). This amount of power and control in contact with one man breaks the kindest heart and the purest thoughts turning the person evil and corrupt. Douglass uses flashbacks that illustrate the emotions that declare the negative effects of slavery.
What is courage? According to Webster’s Dictionary, it is the mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty. Douglass demonstrated how he put his courageous heart to the test in multiple ways. This novel is just one example. Douglass, along with many other souls lost to slavery, lived very cruel, inhumane lifestyles.
By Douglass stating just how his mistress begun to take precautions of him being able to read, and how furious his mistress became, Douglass brings irony in his writing to convey to his audience that the same woman that provided for the unfortunate and aided the ones that needed it the most… is now restricting a slave from his freedom. Learning to Read and Write Fredrick Douglas was a well known figure in the abolishment movement his narrative “Learning to Read and Write” Fredrick Douglas shares his own personal journey of how he learns to read and write. His chronological organization also helps the reader get a better grasp of the stages in his life; his innocence, his epiphany, his loathing and his finally his determination. In the expert Douglas uses syntax and diction, intelligent metaphors and he use of irony to portray his thoughts that went through his mind as a slave.

According to his narrative, Douglass states, “Master, however, was not a humane slaveholder.
“One who is a slaveholder at heart never recognizes a human being in a slave” (Angelina Grimke). This quote was created to show the effect that slavery had on not only the slave, but the slaveholder. The slaveholder would dehumanize the slave to the point where the human was no longer recognizable; instead, the slave was property. Throughout this autobiography, Frederick Douglass uses language to portray the similarities and differences between the two sides. He allows the reader to spend a day in the life of a slave to see the effects from it.
Frederick Douglass wrote his autobiography My Bondage and my Freedom in order to prove to the world that even though he was an eloquent speaker, he had once been a salve. In one chapter, initially Mrs. Auld was glad about Douglass’s reading because she taught him. “My mistress-who had begun to teach me,” (Douglass pg 521). I think that Mrs. Auld is later “violent in her opposition” to Douglass’s reading because her husband taught her that slaves are things and not people.
Frederick Douglass’s narrative provides a first hand experience into the imbalance of power between a slave and a slaveholder and the negative effects it has on them both. Douglass proves that slavery destroys not only the slave, but the slaveholder as well by saying that this “poison of irresponsible power” has a dehumanizing effect on the slaveholder’s morals and beliefs (Douglass 40). This intense amount of power breaks the kindest heart and changes the slaveholder into a heartless demon (Douglass 40). Yet these are not the only ways that Douglass proves what ill effect slavery has on the slaveholder. Douglass also uses deep characterization, emotional appeal, and religion to present the negative effects of slavery.
Fredrick Douglass meets Hugh Auld’s wife Sophia and he is surprised about how nice she is. She does not really know how to treat slaves because she has never had them. A slave with education is said to be a dangerous slave so they are not supposed to be taught. However it seems like Mrs. Auld did not know that, and she began to teach Douglass the Alphabet which is a big turning point in Douglass’s life as a slave. Mr. Auld figures out that his wife has been teaching Douglass, and he puts an end to it, and he tells her how dangerous it is to teach a slave.
In the beginning of Frederick Douglass’s Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass (1845) Douglass applies various forms of rhetorical devices to portray the hardships that he suffered through as a child. Through Douglass’s utilization of imagery mixed with parallelism and anecdotes from his personal experiences in his life that paints gruesome and cruel images in the mind of his audience, such as when he goes into detail of the whippings and beatings that he witnessed his aunt undergo vividly describing her “heartrending shrieks” and depicting her as the “gory victim” that was “literally covered in blood”. (Douglass 20) Implementing such strong imagery Douglass strives to spark emotion in his audience in order to make them feel pity when
