Makeila Merrick 1st Hour Advanced English 11 Crucible Argumentative Essay “Because It Is My Name!” What is a name? The literal definition of a name is a word or set of words by which a person, animal, place, or thing is known, addressed, or referred to. Well, what is in a name, some might ask? A name is not only what someone is called, but it refers to the deeds they have done, whether they be good or bad. John Proctor made a good name for himself by helping to build the church, knowing his commandments, and saving his good name for his wife and children. John Proctor still has his good name. Proof of his good name is shown in his willingness to serve the church. He helped the people in the village to build the church. “[He] nailed the roof on the church, [He] hung the door.” (pg.172) Being the good man he is, he volunteered to help get the church built. If he was not a good man he wouldn’t have done that. His willingness to serve the church is proof of his good name. An unrighteous man would not know his commandments or the Lord’s prayer. Well, to start the definition of an affair is a romantic or sexual relationship between two people, especially one that is outside marriage and the definition of a relationship is the way in which two or more concepts, objects, or people are connected, or the state of being connected. John and Abigail did not have a relationship. It happened one time which does not mean that they stayed connected meaning that the quote on quote affair was a one time occurrence, not an affair. John even said that “[he] would rather cut off [his] hand before [he would] ever reach for [her] again”.
