Exigence’s of The Invisible Island Imagine losing your mother, father, or even giving birth to a still born child without ever being given the opportunity to pay respect to them and giving the proper burial they deserve. Imagine never being notified about the death of a grandmother or best friend who you may have lost touch with a few years before, then later finding out it is practically forbidden to ever able to visit their grave. Christopher Maag brought this problem to the attention of many by creating this heartfelt and informative article to raise awareness about this mass grave that is practically nonexistent to the public eye. This poorly kept, traitorous mass grave knoen as Hart Island has served as a mass grave for countless years and holds the bodies of thousands, yet very few people even know that is exists. For most readers, this was probably the first they had ever even …show more content…
of the weary mother who had just gave birth to a stillborn child and was not in her right mind enough to make such a drastic decision as to where her dead, cold infant child should be rightfully buried. This tactic not only raised awareness of how many families in distress were taken advantage of, but also sparked a fire of anger inside the reader for the families. Christopher Maag also raised the point that in most cases, officials do not put enough time or effort tracking down the families or even friends of the deceased. Most the bodies buried on Hart Island are not nameless, unidentified bodies; however, a lot of families have come forward saying that they were perfectly capable of paying for a proper burial but were never notified of their loved one’s death. This argument makes it much more personal to the reader because it forces them to imagine their loved one dying and never being notified by
As mentioned earlier, the records at the Municipal Cemetery were not kept as they should have been and there may be burials there that are not recorded. When his mother died in 1923 the Municipal Cemetery was in the midst of the cemetery wars described earlier; with oil and other muck flowing through the cemetery few would have chosen to be buried there unless they had loved ones also buried nearby. Donald’s father John Graves (2/17/1874-7/29/1942) continued to live in Long Beach until 1942; he, too, is buried at the Municipal
Recently, the alarming rates of obesity in our contemporary society has been due to the lack of active behaviours starting from a young age in which the younger generation spends a large amount of their childhood watching television. Both concerned and disappointed, Zan Smith’s pragmatic article titled “Beach Lessons”, published on the Child Monthly magazine, exposes the concerns of the increasing amount of time children spends viewing television and playing video games and should, therefore, be minimized. Accompanying her informative piece are two photographs that are contrasted and accentuates the importance of a child’s youth. Furthermore, Smith targets parents of young children in an attempt to encourage parents to take their kids outside
It’s Not So Hot in Paradise As an American from the Midwest, the image that comes to mind of life on a Caribbean island is paradise which evokes a feeling of peace and tranquility. A place where one can escape the snow and freezing temperatures during the long winter months. A place one could enjoy beautiful beaches, tropical trees and green foliage year round.
For many years the location of Palm Cemetery was unknown. Called "Palm Cemetery" because of the lone palm tree marking the location, it was available free-of-charge to anyone not able to come up with the $10 burial fee at Sunnyside, or not able to transfer the body the four miles to the pauper 's field area of the Municipal Cemetery. The cemetery grounds had been used by the Bixby’s for years as a burial place for their Rancho Los Cerritos workers, but anyone could be buried there without a fee. During the obituary indexing project at Long Beach Public Library, the burial place of several of those who died in Long Beach was listed as Palm Cemetery, but where was it? Long Beach historian Loretta Berner, who grew up on the grounds of the Rancho Los Cerritos, believed it had been incorporated into the Forest Lawn/Sunnyside Cemetery on San Antonio Drive, but she had no proof.
Just walking around you can see large clusters of graves with Asian writing on them, a Jewish section, a Veteran’s section, amongst others. Upon walking around the cemetery, I kind of got the sense that most of these people came from at the very least middle to upper class families, just because of the extravagance of some of the memorials and headstones. Certain very extravagant memorials left my feeling curious, especially the large and eye-catching memorial of the family that all had the same date of death. I did some research and came to learn that this family died in a plane crash a couple of years ago and he was an extremely wealthy businessman. Located just a few feet from that plot was WWE star, Eddie Guerrero’s grave.
I have been really enjoying my story The priests graveyard so far it brings you on a rollercoaster. It makes it difficult to guess what is going to happen next. All though its difficult story to predict there are obvious objects playing a role in the book. The first object is a human in the story but I am referring to him as an object because Renee depends on him for survival.
Nobody Owens. That is the name of the young, sharp-witted, oblivious, main character in The Graveyard Book, but the thing is, is it? The inhabitants of the graveyard and the reader know the mousy haired boy as Bod, but his biological family wouldn’t call him that due to “Bod” not being his actual birth name. Ordinary readers might not contemplate that it’s a big deal, but here’s the thing. It is.
This article journal is from: The Gift of Years by Joan Chittister. In the past, we often hear of people who wanted their name to be remembered throughout history. Whether it be a Roman gladiator, a foreign ruler, or a philosopher, many just wanted their name to be known for all of time. They believed that they left a legacy if their names went down in history. One of the most painful things is that there are graves of unknown soldiers or unclaimed bodies (Chittister 215).

Introduction The title Death 's Acre says a lot of what to this book is about; Death. This book was a fascinating read for its worth. Death 's Acre goes into the life and mind of the man of rotting bodies himself, Dr. Bill Bass, lead anthropologist at the University of Tennessee. While talking about his personal life, he also incorporates a lot of his big cases and studies.
Best of the Worst Parenting is never perfect. Every parents questions whether they are raising their child correctly, and no parent ever feels like they are doing the right thing. With no clear distinction between good and bad parenting, it is usually left to personal preferences and judgements to decide which parents have adequately raised their children and which have failed. When a parent so call “fails,” often it is the children with their strong will and determination to survive that collectively raise themselves. In Jesmyn Ward’s Sing, Unburied, Sing, Leonie, one of the narrators and the mother of another narrator, Jojo, is not the most caring, hands-on mother, but is loving of her children nevertheless.
There is no name for a mother who has to bury their own child. In Kathe Kollwitz’ artwork, Woman with Dead Child, viewers learn the agony and pain associated with losing a child. This artwork, crafted in 1903, grabs attention by expressing love, passion, and emotion over the simplicity of a human being. Viewers of this piece capture a shock and a heart-breaking feeling when first viewing the artwork. Suffering through love is a terrific way to describe Kollwitz’ artwork created by etching.
