Many people living the United States of America frown upon the occupation of being an exotic dancer and find it difficult understanding a dancers perspective of being in this occupational subculture. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, an estimated “400,000…strippers [are] employed by US strip clubs”, and a reported, “$125,000…Average yearly earnings for a stripper” (“Strip Club Statistics”). Everyone has their own personal opinion and values on what it is to be an honest hard working citizen in society. There are those who pass negative judgment on this occupation as being a classless way to make money, a gateway to prostitution and leading to a self-destructive path. Moreover, some also may think that most dancers are uneducated or lethargic in pursuit of alternative career paths. The stereotypes of this profession may be true in some cases, but not for every dancer. A person cannot completely judge a book by its cover based solely on assumption. Attempting cultural research and applying effective interpersonal communication with an exotic dancer, will help to better understand the culture, from their perspective.

Jade admits to not telling her family her real occupation and will display deceptive communication. Being deceptive will only cause trust issues in the long run and communication barriers. She claims that it’s an uncomfortable topic to even attempt to be honest and will only result in criticism. She also fears rejection and negative judgment.
