There were many political, economic, and social changes that occurred during the years 1820-1860. Some of which include Manifest Destiny, financial panics, and reform movements. These changes had many substantial consequences that influenced the growth of The United States as a country and society. A major political change that occurred during this time period was the expansion of the United States westward in North America. This led to many debates in congress and posed a threat to the continuation of slavery in America. The constitution of 1824 was also a topic of political debates. This constitution gave the president increased power and political roles. Similarly the presidential election of 1828 was the first to have such unrestrained and damaging mudslinging. This election sets the example of what all elections try to avoid to this day. Another political change was the Indian Removal Act. Native Americans were forced from their homes westward at gun point on what is known as “the trail of tears”. This belief that god has given America the right to take all land away from the Natives is a direct result of Manifest Destiny. The financial panic of 1837 was caused mainly by Andrew Jackson. He opposed the rechartering of the Second Bank of the United States. This lead to “the bank war”. Another principle economic change was the Gold Rush. This caused a massive amount of people to travel to California and develop western America. Roads and towns were built throughout San Fransisco, which lead to the development of new methods of transportation such as steamships and steam powered trains.
