The Great Gatsby: Book VS. Movie The novel and movie both titled The Great Gatsby are two marvelous works that contain numerous similarities and differences. The movie version of The Great Gatsby shows the viewer what is happening in the story without comments from the narrator and the viewer can understand exactly what is happening without any thought involved. The novel, however, expects the reader to look deep inside the story to grab the true effect the novel gives and what kind of meaning is being presented. Critic Mencken wrote,“Scott Fitzgerald's new novel, "The Great Gatsby" is in form no more than a glorified anecdote, and not too probable at that”. I don’t agree with him because he is saying the novel was treated as being more special,than would normally be considered. It seems as though when the, The Great Gatsby was first published it was not received well. But I suppose it doesn't matter now because the novel is a classic and very popular. The novel also challenges the reader, it allows the reader to explore the personalities of the character in their own way. This way the reader can relate the personalities to real life people. The novel also gives the reader more freedom than the movie. Essentially, it permits the reader to consider their own opinions of the different characters. As a person watches the movie, the characters are shown out for them and every detail of the character is seen. Scott Fitzgerald is a novel that was published in 1925. It follows characters living in the town of West and East Egg on flourishing Long Island in the summer of 1922.
