Our oceans serve a very important purpose for not only the life sustained within them but for humans as well. Many people rely on fish and other marine animals as a main source of food or as a source of income. Others rely on ocean-based tourism to make a living. The health of our oceans is declining; biodiversity loss and the deterioration of coral reefs are major issues mainly caused by human actions such as pollution and overfishing. The main way we are trying to help preserve our oceans is by implementing marine protected areas. These areas restrict activities that can potentially harm the environment such as fishing, boating and collection of shells as well as enforcing leave no trace policies. In the U.S. there are approximately 1,600 …show more content…
Human interference in the form of oil drilling and costal development are large factors in the decline of ocean health that are easily preventable. MPAs place restriction on development and the exploitation oceans for industrial benefit. Without MPAs costal development could get out of hand extremely fast and we could lose control over the amount of pollution that enters the ocean. Limiting costal development is one of the numerous ways MPAs can be a very positive mechanism for …show more content…
People living near where a protected area is being proposed are more likely to support the conservation efforts if there is some material benefit. The main ways MPAs generate revenue is from fishing and tourism; specifically, things like SCUBA diving, snorkeling and the use of beaches. Although the main purpose of MPAs is not to make a profit, this can be used as an incentive for policymakers and locals who may not otherwise have any interest in conservation. MPAs are generally meant to benefit fishers when the increased fish populations within the MPAs migrate outside the protected areas into areas where fishing is not restricted. Ideally this should be the outcome but fish may not be migrating as much as we would hope and the fish populations in unprotected areas may not be significantly improving (Roncin et al. 2008). With restrictions in where people can fish and what fish they can take MPAs don’t always help the fishing industry. MPAs can be a great way to create a tourism industry meaning more jobs and more money being brought to the area. This is usually a positive thing especially if protected areas can educate people about conservation. In some cases, however, this increased human presence in the protected areas can cause harm to the ecosystem if it is not well managed. For example increased tourism means a higher likelihood that humans will leave trash or disturb vegetation. In places like
Explain why we should care about protecting this species from extinction. People love to look at these charismatic, cute, and cuddly animals as they play in the water. As a result, they help to generate millions of dollars a year in tourism income in coastal areas where they are found. Another
Offshore Drilling Every year, in the United States alone, 565 million barrels or oil are extracted as a result of offshore drilling; totaling a startling amount of roughly 1.5 million barrels a day. Consequently, these threatening practices are negatively impacting marine mammals, sea birds, sea turtles, and fish. Although drilling offshore provides access to expensive resources such as oil, it heavily contributes to the extinction and endangerment of animals, and the disruption of marine ecosystems, thus these practices should be prohibited and viewed as unethical. To begin, new techniques of horizontal drilling allow for even greater amounts of oil to be extracted from a single well, producing problems in infrastructure on land.
In Mary Kate Frank’s article, “Saving the High Seas” from Junior Scholastic, the author explains how marine life is being threatened by overfishing and plastic debris. Each country controls the water within 230 miles of their shores. After 230 miles, the high seas begin which “belong to everyone.” Only one percent of waters are protected and you can still do many things in protected waters.
The Board doesn't think enough ocean habitats are safe. They support this with “only 1 percent of marine habitats (are) strictly protected” (par.12). This last statistic allows the reader to realize just how much needs to
Government regulates hunting to control certain animal populations by setting hunting seasons, creating limits, and monitoring hunting efforts and animal populations. “In that case, hunting is good for the environment because the hunting community ensures that wildlife populations of game species are sustainable from one generation to the next. This requires that a diversity of natural habitats be kept intact, unpolluted, and undisturbed. Hunters support all these efforts” ("Why is Hunting Good for the Environment?").
Since, they allow public access to see these animals, they act as tourist attraction spots with economical and financial benefits, they do not hinder scientific
Not only do we need to raise awareness for the national and state parks, but we also need to raise funding. Richard J. Ansson Jr. in association with the Fordham Environmental Law Journal reiterates the need for funding by reminding the reader of the National Park Service's purpose: “to protect and preserve scenic, natural and historical resources for the enjoyment by present and future generations” (Ansson 6). By supporting the NPS in their efforts to protect the land, you
Sarah Freeman’s article in The Ethicalist explains the negative effects humans have on the ocean. These negative effects include plastic pollution, global warming, and worst of all, overfishing. Overfishing occurs when a fish species is wild caught faster than it can reproduce. This leads to fewer fish in the ocean, meaning less marine biodiversity (Freeman). After Freeman spends most of her article explaining how the oceans are suffering, she then starts talking about what can be done to prevent a baren sea.
In the testimony before the House Committee on the Public Lands on June 1913, Pinchot (an advocate for conservationists) stated that “the use of the park will be enormously increased” (Pinchot and Raker 2). This means the the ability to have multiple use of the land can allow the government to create more than just an attraction site, but also create activities and different things people can do there for a price. Also in the testimony before the House Committee on the Public Lands on June 1913, Pinchot also stated that “the national park will be visited by a very large number of people who cannot visit them now” (Pinchot and Raker). This gives government the opportunity to make money, because people would pay money in order to see the beauty of the land now that it is cleared up.
Years ago, product branding was the distinction of a company and the products they sold. It could be a slogan, the name of the company, a sign, symbol, or even a design that made a company stand out from its competitors (Perrey, 2011). Today, a product brand can be promoted on a website, you tube video, or even a social media page that advertises the product, and gets the message out about a company that can reach millions of people. Social media has changed the way people brand and advertise their products. A little known company can go on social media and promote their product, and become famous in a matters of days rather than years (Tai, 2013).
The oceans economy provided more than 2.7 million jobs and contributed more than $258 billion to the GDP of the United States in 2010. The ocean economy supports employment two and a half times larger than other natural resources industries. Approximately 5.4 million jobs in 2010 were directly and indirectly supported by the ocean with their total contribution estimated at $633 billion. More than a billion jobs around the world supported by ocean economies. It’s perceptible that the ocean’s economy is really important, however but due to overfishing, it is costing many people their jobs.
Encouraging visitors to connect with and be more aware of nature. The context under which an activity occurs can change motivation, expectations and the behavior of tourists. For example, heightened notions of wilderness have been shown to decrease the need to touch wildlife (Curtin, 2006). 5. Expand the regional promotion campaign.
effective” on creating environmental policies. One in every three kids are obese in America, according to the website www.kidshealth.org. The fast food industry causes obesity by doing concerning practices and because of a lack of healthier convenient options. Obesity causes health problems such as asthma, heart failure, and diabetes. Possible solutions to this dangerous chain are educating fast food customers and stricter regulation by the FDA over the fast food companies.
When thinking of social media, the sites that first come to mind are Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to name a few. Before all of those sites existed, social media evolved in a different form than what we call social media today. “Social media is a type of information system where information is sent through electronic communication through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content” (Merriam-Webster). Social Media is simply a way that people interact freely, while sharing information about their lives.
