The novel I’ve read was called April Raintree by Beatrice Culleton. This book was based on other peoples experiences of being Indigenous or being in the foster care system. When Beatrice wrote this book it felt extremely realistic from the bits that were violent. The author of this book is really idealistic about how she set up her ideas in a certain way. The main characters of this novel are, April and Cheryl Raintree. April Raintree is about two metis girls getting pulled into the foster care system, while they are in the foster care April gets put into a bad foster home with the DeRosiers. After they were old enough to get out of the foster system, April and Cheryl were living together when they witness dramatic events. The huge and dramatic event that occured in the novel was the rape scene. When April went back to Manitoba right after she heard about her sisters accident. Cheryl told April that she was living with a man …show more content…

Ask Stan here. He was with me. We both saw it. We tired to stop it, Officer. We slammed on the brakes but we couldn’t get there in time. Christ, one minute she was standing there, balancing, and the next nothing. Why would she want to do a thing like that? Those Indians are always killing themselves. If they aren’t shooting each other on the reserves, it’s this. Holy jumpin’ Jupiter! What a night this has been. And now this. I tell you it’s
In some states in the United States, youth age out of foster care at the age of 18, however in states such as Maryland and the District of Columbia youth age out of foster care at the age of 21. It was the John H. Chafee Foster Care Independence Program, which was a part of the Foster Care Independence act of 1999, which promoted programs to assist youth in the process of making the transition from foster care. The primary goal of these programs were that youth become self sufficient. Such programs as the John H. Chafee Foster Care Impendence Program, assisted youth who have left in care but not yet reached age 21. While extending the age of emancipating from care to the age of 21, was created to form positive outcomes for emancipated youth,
Foster care is one of the oldest social systems, its official implementation dating back to 1909, when the federal government officially suggested that foster homes were the best way to care for children, as opposed to the former system of orphanages and orphan trains. Foster care began as a voluntary way for parents to ensure their children could live a better life, but has since become a largely involuntary way to remove a child from a potentially dangerous situation (Rosenfield et al., 1997). Social workers predate this system, first appearing within the first Charity Organization as “friendly visitors” in 1877 (Segal, 2020). Social workers and foster care have long been intertwined, but social policy dictates much of what the foster care

Into considerations of having children, many people have different outlooks on the proper way to raise their children. However, in The Glass Castle, Rose Mary and Rex Walls had their own method of parenting, which many people would find controversial. Throughout The Glass Castle, author Jeannette Walls, describes her childhood and her consequential living conditions that she had to deal with due to the choices her parents made. Although Rose Mary and Rex had their own methods of raising their children which would be considered neglectful, many would believe that they belong in a foster care, but since they didn't get taken away there must be a reason to it. If Jeannette was placed into foster care I don't think she would have benefited from

I did most of my research online. My first piece of information came from a website based on Children 's Rights. This site gave me information about average ages in foster care, institutions, and group homes. This sight was very informal about the types of living foster kids can go through. The next site I visited was about What Foster Care is.
The foster care system shatters like broken glass and there is no repair for broken glass. Permanent damage can only be fixed with drastic solutions, redesigning the system is the method to follow. Foster parents go through hardships and trials while trying to adopt children. Children need stability and the parents willing to give them that they cannot be with forever. A reason for a shattered system is the result of a shattered admissions process.
The novel April Raintree is about a young Métis woman who is sexually assaulted after being mistaken for her sex-worker sister Cheryl. April has grown stronger and overcomes her challenges over time. It will be 5 years this June that I have been in the Foster Care System, I can still remember walking home from school smelling the fresh breeze of air, all the sweaty kids running to their cars waiting to head home from school, or to the ice cream trucks that all had the same foul smell of cheese and takis that followed every breeze that came near. There was a black car, the one time is what we referred them to, this was something that was not out of the ordinary to see around my home. But today was different, two men wearing business suits stepped out of it and went into my home. I stayed back just to get a glimpse of what was going on. I see my mom rush out of the house and into the car, little did I know this would be the last time I would see her as a
Orphanages were commonly utilized for orphan children before foster care systems emerged in the 19th century (Herman, 2012). As dependent youth have been removed from homes which commonly abuse and neglect them, foster care is known as the current system which child welfare institutions currently use to place these dependent children. As it is commonly known, foster care is a safe haven for dependent children, however many of these children experience trauma and mental health diagnosis. As one examines the trauma and mental health interrelationships in the current literature available, the common themes which are prevalent among research in this area of study are complex trauma, PTSD ,PTSD and internalized symptoms and mental health comorbidity.
Rhetorical Analysis Ruth Graham in the article, “Why Adopted Children Struggle Over Time,” explicates that adopted children are proven to have more difficulties compared to “normal” children regardless of when they were adopted. Graham supports her claims by giving factual evidence from recent scientific studies. The author’s purpose is to bring awareness to the effects of being adopted in order to clarify a common misconception that while in most cases the children are adopted into successful families, they still experience effects from adoption. The author writes in an educated tone to convey to her readers, the general public, that her claims are credible.
It 's a jaw-dropping book that will leave you wanting more as the author Laurie writes in a crisp and clear way describing the young girl Melinda’s horrific story and how it unfolds. The author 's tone gives off the vibe of a young frighted girl which I find really enhances this sad, but exhilarating story. This story taught me to always speak up for myself and to never let anyone take advantage of me. I would recommend this novel because it is extremely detailed, painting vivid pictures in your mind that really help to magnify and
In order for a novel to have more deepfelt meaning or to convey the true meaning rightfully an author needs to use literary techniques. For instance, in the novel In Search of April Raintree written by Beatrice Culleton Mosionier used several literary techniques. Basically, to convey the life story of Aboriginal people, specifically speaking Metis, from childhood to adulthood. The protagonist April Raintree suffered through life obstacles. However, her sister Cheryl, did not handle the situation well.
Literature Review Throughout the years, research has been conducted on the effects that foster care can have on children. In the United States alone, there are roughly 670,000 children who have spent time in the foster care system each year (“Foster Care,” 2017). Of those children, approximately 33% of them age out of foster care system. Studies then show that the foster care system has had varying effects on the children who are/have been a part of it. In many cases, studies have noted the effects of attachment for children in foster care.
