For this chosen gang response essay, I have decided to interview Nathan Scarano. Scarano is currently Probation Division Director II. With also a five-year experience of SMASH and years of policing for San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department before this. Scarano was a perfect person to interview with lot of experience with gangs and even more experience in probation. This gives me a real insight on how he has dealt with multiple problems and gang related violence from numerous occasions. In this essay we will be going over multiple strategies, programs, and services. Also, touching on how these certain strategies, programs, and services are supposed to work. With the extension of is they are going to succeed or if it succeeds.

Scarano has a very helpful input and experience on this certain subject while currently being a part of the probation division. With this he works more with induvials outside of gangs but in some occasions gets involved in some gang entanglement. This is because of his upbringing of a family. While being SMASH can cause a very string hateful relationship from gang members and could put you and your family at risk so eventually, he went into the field we are talking about now. Probation and how it deals with gangs is a big deal. It is very easy for a gang related subject to reoffend for obvious reasons. Scarano also explained in certain scenarios gang members or even other people that got affiliated with a gang in prison have to go back in a certain amount of time. This is when they get something called a “laundry list”. A laundry list is a list of things that a person that protected them while being in prison wants from that person as payment. So, with in regards of being a probation officer for a gang member or all together can be really difficult. Gangs also get respect and honored when going away for a long period of time and even get tattoos to honor their …show more content…
The chances of gang members reoffending are indelibly high with 76.6 percent chance with statistics from, Office of Justice Programs. With these stats it might almost seem like it pointless to do probation for these offenders but by doing this we get access to check in on them regularly to make sure no more illegal crime is being committed and if so, they go back to prison. This also gives permission to officers to do searches on the house and so on which can lead to many benefits. There is a lot of give and take when it comes to probation for these criminals. Is this something that needs to be done yes, does this mean it his helping or hurting. It shows that it can help us in many ways, but it is also a very dangerous scenario and the chances of them staying clean are very slim which is the reason of
For many youths, gang life is all they know. Many gang members have other family members who are involved in gangs already. In Lauger’s (2012) ethnography of the DFW boyz, he found
It is very rare for someone who had taken a firsthand experience in gang life to come up in the open and narrate these experiences to the public as well as the dangers which they go through. This is irrespective of the fact that the realism of gang life can be seen in news, movies or in the actual streets, reading about it and visualizing the scenes in one’s mind is like taking a firsthand experience in these
This research was to point out three main ideas, drugs, gang relationships and violence. Drugs have been sold and used in gangs for years now. Gang relationships aren't much different from regular relationships only thing different is their is rules and boundary you can't cross. Gang members have always used violence as a way to solve problems.
Many gang members already have tattoos to represent their gang, therefore, in some prisons, they offer tattoo removals. In addition to these approaches, monitoring communications and strip searches are still necessary to watch members (Clear, Cole and Reisig
Prison Gangs Our streets and neighborhoods today are filled with drug abuse and violence, generally distributed and perpetrated by various gangs. Many people cannot go out of their houses at night or take a walk after sunset in fear of falling victim to these gangs. When these gang members get caught for their illegal activity, people just assume that they are locked up, away from the gang behavior that incarcerated them in the first place. Unfortunately, this logic is flawed.
Utilizing research findings and realistic experiences, Shakur, Howell, and Griffiths disprove myths about gangs, justify the reasons for young people being recruited because of their desire to be understood by others similar to them, and girls integrating themselves into the groups from their relationships with members. Howell and Griffiths managed to explain the principles behind gangs and their members' lifestyles, while Shakur provided real gangster experiences as supporting evidence for the research findings. Theories to gangs may be existent, but without proper research leading to the findings, or experiences from subjects who lived the lifestyle, beliefs about the organizations merely become empty
In the United States, every year there are around 2,000 gang-related homicides and in the realistic fiction novel, The Outsiders, by S.E Hinton, it explores the issues of gang violence, and teenagers in gangs. Around 40% of all members in gangs are teenagers, who are getting involved in some dangerous things very early in life. In the novel The Outsiders, the “Greasers” which is a gang of all teenagers, fight other gangs and commit serious crimes such as murder. We as a society need to pinpoint why teenagers join gangs and stop them beforehand. We also need to help people get out of gangs if they are already in one.
Gang violence is running rampnd across the nation. Just last week over two hundred cases of gang violence were recorded. As a nation, we can’t stand for this any longer. This is getting out of hand and it puts the public in danger. Now I have created a novel solution to this problem.
On November 5, 2015 we had the privilege of having Dr. Charles Katz come into our class to speak about his work with gangs, specifically Gang Truce as a Form of Violence Intervention. For this paper, I will be sharing what I learned about gang truce and its relation to public health by answering several questions involving violence and how it can be used to effect public health. These questions include why gang violence is considered a public health issue; how a gang truce and its mechanics address the public health issue of gang violence; and what are the problems surrounding the gang truce model as a means of addressing gang violence. Gang violence is a large issue that involves the wellbeing of many individuals, from the gang members to
Abstract "Race and Gang Affiliation: An Examination of Multiple Marginality" is a study by Adrienne Freng and Finn-Aage Esbensen that was published in the Justice Quarterly in 2007. The study examines the relationship between race and gang affiliation among young people in the United States. The authors argue that young people who belong to both racial and ethnic minority groups and are gang-affiliated are subjected to multiple levels of marginalization, which can result in an increased risk of involvement in criminal behavior. The study found that race and gang affiliation are interconnected, with African American and Latino youth being more likely to join gangs than their white counterparts. The authors suggest that addressing the underlying
Gangs are long-term sellers, so they have an incentive not to drive customers away by abusing their power. ”(Skarbek). Most inmates who are recruited mostly for their protection are usually the ones who get out of prison in 1 year or less. Therefore the gangs use them once they are out or threaten them. The gangs in prison are very bad and that's why we need to fix the prison
They examine current gang management strategies and see what works and does not. They completed their research by survey. “First, according to the respondents, inmate containment and sanctions were perceived to be very effective at managing gangs…. The second strategy is based on investigations, which if successful, also increases the costs of being affiliated with a STG through internal and external sanctions… Last, respondents placed great value on using the products of these investigations through intelligence sharing within their prison system, other correctional systems, and with law enforcement (Winterdyk & Ruddell,p. 734.
In Policing Gangs in America, Charles Katz and Vincent Webb discuss the issues that take place within American Gangs today. This book goes into great detail on how the gang officers work and the different kind of atmosphere they work in. Their job isn’t like other law enforcement jobs. It’s one of the more dangerous occupations in the Criminal Justice system. These gang officers focus on how they react to public gang issues.
Summary This article Gang & Security Threat Groups Issues In Jail Today was written by George W. Knox from May through June of 2022. This article was written based on the information and feedback from the NGCRC 2019 jail survey.
