Think of some favorite memories or objects: the first love, favorite pet, favorite foods, or maybe even a good vacation. What do all of these have in common? When recalled, these memories or objects bring a sense of happiness that makes one think fondly of these things. Happiness is an emotion that the human race strives for. As Schoch explains, “Happiness is... well, it’s just feeling goodenjoying life and wanting the feeling to be maintained” (Schoch). It is strived for in relationships, in successful endeavors or actions, or in taking up particular hobbies. Happiness is an amazing thing and makes one feel great, but can too much happiness be a bad thing? Happy people are more open and easier to approach in public. Additionally, as Susan David states, “In some cases, they even help broaden how we think and act by directing our attention to new information and opportunities” (David 124). By being happy, one is more likely to listen to other people to learn the way they think or feel about a certain thing. Someone is even more likely to accept what is said or even start to feel that way about that particular topic as well. Happiness has other benefits as well. When someone is happy, their selfesteem is higher. For example, when one is happy or in a positive mood, they are less likely to pick out small things about themselves. Also, happiness can come from the excitement of dangerous adventures. One example of this can be an activity which is exciting but dangerous. It is called the extreme sports, and many youngsters enjoy them.

The purpose of this essay is to pick apart Mill’s essay and to give my own personal opinion about happiness. Stuart believed that you could achieve happiness by helping others achieve happiness and by finding things that you enjoy in life.
