Have you had any good experiences recently? For some, this may be hard to answer because our brains are so caught up on the negative events in our lives. In the book Hardwiring Happiness, Rick Hanson discusses the topic of happiness. He argues that we can rewire our brains by focusing on the positive. Our brains have a negativity bias, which stems from our prehistoric ancestors. At that time, focusing on the negative was crucial because it may be a threat to survival but this mindset is no longer needed today. Hanson proposes a method called "H.E.A.L." which stands for having a positive experience, enriching, absorbing, and linking the positive and negative. By learning about our brains and following the HEAL method to take in the positive …show more content…
Over the millions of years our ancestors struggled to survive in an environment filled with dangers and learning quickly from bad experiences was necessary to stay alive. This developed a negativity bias which makes our brain more attentive to bad experiences, react intensely to it, and store it in our neural structure quickly. Hanson writes, “Even when you feel relaxed and happy and connected, your brain keeps scanning for potential dangers, disappointments, and interpersonal issues”(35). Because our brains try so hard to find bad things around us, it is hard for us to take in the small happy experiences we have in our daily lives. To achieve a sense of ease, it is crucial for us to overcome the negativity bias built into our brains. To do this, we can rewire our brains to focus on the …show more content…
The HEAL method is a process Hanson developed to help hardwire our happiness and it stands for having a positive experience, enriching it, absorbing it, and linking positive and negative material. The positive experience can be small, such as calling your friend, but we need to make sure that we stay with it for a while (enrich) and let it land in our mind (absorb). The last step is optional and it tells us to cancel out or replace negative thoughts using the positive thoughts we gained in the first three steps. According to Hanson, “as your positive mental states become positive neural traits, you’ll gradually rest in a happiness that emerges naturally inside you” (77). By overcoming the negativity bias in our brain using the HEAL method, we can achieve unconditional happiness which can make our lives much more joyful and
Through pathos, Haidt promotes that positive emotions lead to positive reactions, leading to overall happy
Positive emotions like happiness, contentment, and joy help us develop stability and optimism, deepen social connections, and encourage a sense of purpose and meaning in life. They can give us the motivation and energy to achieve our goals, pursue our passions, and help us navigate difficult situations more quickly and confidently. Negative emotions like anger, sadness, and fear are vital. They can help us identify areas of our lives that need attention or change and motivate us to take action. Studies have shown that individuals who can acknowledge and process negative emotions in healthy and constructive ways experience greater psychological well-being and resilience.
The first reading of the first chapter of the book Pursuing Happiness, edited by Matthew Parfitt and Dawn Skorczewski introduces to different parts of the book of Psalms. I have done my research using different sources to understand more about this antique text. In the following paragraphs I will discuss the structure and the authorship of the five different sections of the book of Psalms. The book of Psalms is one of the largest book in the Bible, it is divided into five sections of divine songs, in over all, this book contains one hundred and fifty chapters.
Negativity bias is when one is highly reactive and sensitive to their challenging environment, which would induce a sense of “fight or flight.” When there is no threat, one would still feel stressed, uneasy, and disconnected. This is a result of survival instincts hardwired in humans to be able to evade danger. The Polyvagal Theory explains this reaction as a part of the sympathetic state. This theory discusses how one’s behavior is constantly going through a cycle of relaxation (ventral vagal), “fight or flight” (sympathetic), or freeze (dorsal vagal).
Positive thinking is one of the best ways to respond to conflict because it can affect a person’s physical health in a constructive way. The Mayo Clinic Staff states that a positive
“We have evolved to experience a complex array of emotional states, and about half of these are unpleasant. This is not to say they are less valuable, or that having them detracts from our quality of life”. By escaping negative emotions, we prevent ourselves from learning how to cope with these types of experiences when they do occur, which can be very
People experience different things throughout life that can shape their views. Sometimes this can lead to conflict(s). In Amy Tan's novel "The Joy Luck Club", she shows the relationships between mothers and daughters. Through the mother Suyan and her daughter Jing-Mei, Tan reveals characters whose value's influenced their experiences. Suyan, the mother, has a different view on living than Jing-Mei, the daughter.
In all cultures, children are taught to respect their parents. Chinese culture is no different. However, in the Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, An-Mei Hsu grows up in her Aunt’s house and is raised by her Aunt and her grandma, Popo. Under her guardians, An-Mei is taught to not even speak of her mother, so, when her mother shows up at the house when An-Mei is 9, An-Mei is unaware of how to treat her mother. She was taught that her mother was a disgrace to the family.
In Chinese culture the relationship between a mother and a daughter sets a foundation for the daughters actions and ways they make it through life. In the novel, four mothers tell the stories of major events that have affected them and their daughters, who are all first generation Americans. The mothers each have their own unique experiences with their own mother which is reflected in the way they mother their own daughters. Each story a mother has different values and cultural beliefs that are important to them. In the novel The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan the quality of each mother-daughter relationship is illustrated by the daughters’ behaviors and beliefs which can be seen in the way they parent their own children, their feelings and action
This, he suggests, involves a positive move against learned helplessness, or the tendency to think pessimistically when faced with successive negative situations in which one appears to have no control over outcomes. Pessimists, Seligman argues, are prone to blaming themselves for bad things, while optimists are naturally inclined to be less affected by negative events, recognising the possible external factors involved.6 By using his positive thinking techniques, Seligman suggests, optimism can be learned in order to improve mental well-being (which, ironically, implies that pessimists are rather optimistic about the curative powers of Seligman’s solution to their negative
When I think positively, I can achieve greater things, however, having a negative mind-set would handicap me in many ways, obstructing me from achieving my goals. By internalizing this presupposition, I have learnt to always think positively and believe that I can accomplish my goals in
Happiness is misunderstood in a sense that it can never be fully positive or worry free. Scientist struggle to define this emotion, just as we struggle to feel it at times. Untoward emotions are both an inevitable and necessary part of feeling happy; however, experiencing these emotions is not without benefits. Negative emotions can stir motivation, excite creativity, and encourage social interaction, leading these feelings to carry their own importance, instead of just existing as the opposite of happiness. Being motivated to participate in a specific event or perform a certain role is necessary throughout life, as it helps one to stay on task.
In addition, a study of Fredrickson (1998) also revealed that positive emotions are conceptually different compared to negative emotions. Negative emotions should not conceived as opposite of positive emotions because both function in a different way. Thereby, when experiencing positive emotions, negative feelings are almost not noticeable. Effects Diener et al.
Happiness is a Choice There is no greater feeling in the world than being happy. Believe it or not, happiness is a choice that comes from within. According to a theory in Psychology, all humans have a happiness “set- point” that determines their overall well-being. When something positive happens to a person, he becomes happy. On the other hand, when something negative happens to him, he becomes miserable.
Carl Rogers is emphasizing the importance of the self-actualization tendency in shaping human personalities. He believes that in the development of self-concept, positivity is the only key. Human beings develop a real self and ideal self based on the conditional status of positivity. Rogers believed that fully functioning people could achieve "the good life," in which they constantly aim to fulfill their potential and allow their personalities to emerge from their experiences. Here, I am claiming that human should think at positive level.
