F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book The Great Gatsby is a story about the glamour and glitz of the 1920s. Various times throughout the novel, the fashion of the characters is mentioned and discussed. Many scholars today use characters from this book to explain fashion during the 1920s. For example, characters such as Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, and Tom Buchanan are used by scholars to discuss what kind of style was popular back then and why. Jay Gatsby, a man who threw extravagant parties, fell deeply in love with Daisy Buchanan. These activities may have included dancing, boating, golfing, and even home entertaining. Women, especially flappers, began to wear dresses that were shorter and drooped in the back and any jewelry that caught light (Jailer-Chamberlain 29-30). This style was optimal for dancing and going out. In The Great Gatsby, women that attended Gatsby’s parties most likely wore this or something similar. When boating, women most often wore the new pantaloons or a loose wrap and when golfing, the wore a tailored shirt with a short skirt. A scholar named Mildred Jailer-Chamberlain also mentions that the 19th amendment allowing women to vote was passed in 1920 (2). This was a time of freedom and more risk-taking for women. Women took risks in fashion during this time; shorter skirts, for example. Not only does women’s fashion coordinate with the Roaring Twenties activities, men’s clothing coordinates as well. Clothes for men specialized in softer tailoring and new garments for sports like polo and golf. LaLonnie Lehman, in her book Fashion in the Time of The Great Gatsby concludes “The introduction of sports clothing allowed both men and women to participate in sports in comfort” (Lehman 9). The scholars, Jailer-Chamberlin and Lehman, both agree that fashion in the 1920s was “expanded to

The manner in which they show their love is widely accepted amongst many peoples. In the novel--The Great Gatsby, the protagonist, Jay Gatsby, shows his affection for Daisy Buchanan through his riches--he purchases the expensive, luxurious mansion located transversely from her humble abode to ensure his closeness to her; in doing so, he manages to lure her from her husband, reminding her of the history they had shared together previously, “Can’t repeat the past? F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby is written as a mockery of American ideals, and emphasizes materialism, sexual immorality, and selfishness. Though it appears at first glance to be a love story about Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan, The Great Gatsby is actually a satirical take on American culture, especially in the 1920s. In the 1920s, known as the “Roaring Twenties”, America’s economy was booming, jazz was immensely popular, and alcohol had been banned. Organized crime ran rampant, and Americans seemed to lose their moral values.

One way in which the book and film capture the times, is in the handling of, sales of, and consumption of alcohol. We see in both sources that Gatsby’s fortune is largely made from bootlegging illegal liquor and that despite alcohol being prohibited, people of wealth still regularly indulged in this luxury. This reminds readers and viewers that the twenties were a time of prohibition, but also a time when people drank heavily to show off their means. Another way in which the 1920s are portrayed is through the description of and use of clothing in the book and film; respectively. In the film, one sees Gatsby dressed in flamboyant suits made of expensive fabrics.
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel, The Great Gatsby, is full of themes of wealth, love, and tragedy, as well as a subtle but powerful representation of gender. During the time this book was written, women’s suffrage had begun, so women were taking their first steps towards equality with men. The three main women characters in the novel - Daisy Buchanan, Myrtle Wilson, and Jordan Baker- all have things in common but can be vastly different; they reflect both man and society’s view of women in the early 20th century. The Great Gatsby portrays the characters Daisy, Myrtle, and Jordan as stereotypes of women during the 1920s, which is shown through their behavior, beliefs, and ultimate fates and their personalities display both powerful and potentially harmful stereotypes of women at this time.
