I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This book is about a girl, named Scout, her brother Jem, and the people who lived in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama during the 1930s. Along with their summer friend, Dill, the children become obsessed with the idea of getting a look at their unseen neighbor, Boo Radley. Meanwhile, their father, Atticus Finch, decided to defend Tom Robinson, a black man who was wrongly accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. The children get caught up in the trial, in which Tom is convicted and eventually killed while trying to escape from prison. Boo Radley and Tom Robinson are both symbolized by the mocking bird. Boo Radley is symbolized by the mockingbird. He is a sweet, gentle, innocent man. He looks out for the children, and leaves gifts for them. Boo left gifts inside the tree outside of his house for them to find and keep. He obviously did not expect anything in return because the kids did not know it was him from the start. He did it out of the kindness of his heart so that he could see the children having fun and being happy. After the fire at Miss Maudie’s house, he went out in the freezing cold just to bring Scout a blanket to keep herself warm. At the time Scout did not even take notice to the nice gesture. He did so many nice things that nobody in the town noticed. He was portrayed by town the as an evil monster who has done so many horrible things. In reality, all of the horrible things were just made up stories that the children had heard. He never hurt anyone, despite all of the stories. The only horrible thing he did was kill Bob Ewell but he had extreme good intentions. He only did it to save the children, yet again doing something nice for Scout and Jem. Tom Robinson is also symbolized by the mockingbird. He only does good. He is a good husband, father, church goer,
