Jay Gatsby, James Gatz, or Mr. Orange? Who really is Mr. Gatsby? No one seems to know exactly who he is except maybe, Nick Carraway. Many of his acquaintances didn’t know who he was or what he did. He was a man of mystery. One might be confused about the title above. Mr. Orange? After analyzing Gatsby from the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and studying color personalities and characteristics, one could easily perceive Jay Gatsby to be someone who associates himself with the color orange. Some characteristics that Gatsby and the “orange” share are; mysterious, persistence, delusional, and optimistic. The character trait of being mysterious seems to be the primary trait that the general public associates with Gatsby. At one of the many parties that Gatsby throws, Nick Carraway overheard someone saying, “ Somebody told me they thought he killed a man once” (Fitzgerald 44), and also “ I don’t think it’s so much that… it’s more that he was a German spy during the war” (44). Persistent in everything he does. He doesn’t know when to give up. He believes that the world should work the way he wants it too one way or another so ultimately he doesn’t give up on anything and just hopes that everything will fall into place… eventually. One particular thing that Gatsby does not give up on, no matter how ugly things get, is his beloved Daisy. He has become obsessed with Daisy and will not stop chasing her until he has her. Even when Daisy got married to Tom, Gatsby would not stop trying to be with her. Nick says, “ (Gatsby) He hadn’t once ceased looking at Daisy, and i think he revalued everything in his house according to the measure of response it drew from her well-loved eyes” (91).
