Was Chris Justified?
Chris McCandless was justified in leaving his family without a trace because his home was abusive, especially his father. Also he didn't like the rules in society, he loved nature and living by no rules, In a letter sent to Wayne Westerberg he said, “I've decided that I'm going to live this life for some time to come. The freedom and simple beauty of it is just too good to pass up.” Chris wanted to find himself, and he knew nature would be the place to do that. People will disagree, saying he should have at least let someone know where he would be, but if he did, his family would have found him and it would all be for nothing. I will be explaining

When Chris found out, he didn't confront his parents about the affair, he only acted cold towards them without giving a reason as to why. His father was also very abusive towards his mother, he would hit her in front of him and his sister. He also didn't like the rules in society, or being told what to do. P.115 into the wild by Jon Krakauer, Hathaway said “Chris just didn’t like being told what to do. I think he would have been unhappy with any parents; he had trouble with the whole idea of parents.” His parents were a big reason as to why he left, because he just simply didn’t like having them around, they didn’t take him seriously. P.64 Chris complained to Carine that their parents' behavior was “so irrational, so oppressive, disrespectful, and insulting that I finally passed my breaking point. Since they won't ever take me seriously.” He went on to say how he was going to “divorce them as his parents.” This proves his parents played a big role as to why Chris left and never …show more content…
He had met so many new people, and was in the place he loved, nature. P.37 In his journal he says “It is the experiences, the memories, the great triumphant joy of living to the fullest extent in which real meaning is found.” Chris really was happy in this experience he had, that I do believe most people wouldn’t do. He liked nature so much he actually went out and lived in it, and never would have hurt it. P.198 His sister carine points out “Chris would never, ever, intentionally burn down a forest, not even to save his life.” When Chris got lost he could have set the forest on fire so he could be found, but as his sister said he would have never have hurt the forest.
Chris made a huge impact on the lives of others, he made friends with people on his way to Alaska. He made a huge impact on Ron Franz, Ron had a son who died, and he viewed Chris like a son and asked to adopt Chris. P.55 “So I asked Alex if I could adopt him, if he would be my grandson.” Seeing this it proves he made a huge impact on people, especially Ron. Even though Chris didn’t say yes to Ron’s request, he never said no, I do believe Chris may have viewed Ron as a father, and may have agreed to his request after arriving from
Also, not to mention his dad had a second life and had another child, Chris had to live at both places and take care of both siblings while keeping it a secret from his mom. On page 121 it states “ Long after falling in love with Billie, long after she gave birth to Chris,Walt continued his relationship with Marcia in secret, dividing his time between two households”. I believe that Chris just wanted to get out, leave his toxic childhood behind and no kid should have to go through that. So lastly, he just wanted freedom and to get out and explore.
Growing up tho Chris’s parents always fought. And according to Chris’s sister Carnie they blamed Chris for the reason why they got together. This was a lot of pressure for this guy, and i'm sure it would be a lot of pressure for anyone. The only times this pressure was lifted from Chris was when they were outdoors, either out camping or on hikes, it was the only time the fighting would stop, so at an early age Chris learned that the outdoors meant
He liked having a challenge and was why he decided to start his journey towards Alaska with nothing but a backpack. In the documentary, Chris’s sisters say how their parents used to take them out into the wilderness, like going hiking, and they explained how they always felt more at peace because there was less fighting going on between their parents. I think Chris grew a relationship with the wilderness because it was his safe space, a space where he knew things were going to be okay. The novel says, “Chris was fearless even when he was little. He didn’t believe the odds applied to him.
In the book on page 56-58, Chris writes to Westerberg, “The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.” This shows why Chris likes being outside with nature so much away from everyone. He didn't want to stay in one spot and do the same things in his life, he wanted to change it up. If Chris didn't feel happy with his life, but only felt happy in nature, why wouldn't he leave into the
But with his mothers affair and his two life living and abusive father it would make sense how he could go without talking to them for so long. So he should 80% be justified for not telling his parents that he went out to the wild without telling them so. Chris McCanless’s life was far from normal he had complicated parents, meaning his father was living 2 lives. Because he had a different family before Chris was born but he didn't tell Chris's mother or his sons or daughter, and with his father being abusive both verbally and physically. Then on top of that with his mother having an affair it made Chris upset and he really cut off talking to them, it tells us this on page 103 and 121.
He was a strong believer in being alone and finding yourself through nature. This is evident in all of the books he carried with him- Thoreau and Jack London style books. The young man took the ideas in these books and lived them. Chris has a version of himself in his mind, as a man who is connected with the wild. It is easily seen in the book that he tried to be as close with nature as possible.
I think this quote on page 94 furthers my point even more “Chris's resentment of his parents hardened, his sense of outrage over injustice in the world at large grew.” and the final nail in the coffin that proves Chris had an unstable relationship with his parents, especially his father is on page 93 “When Walt's double life came to light, the revelations inflicted deep wounds. All parties suffered terribly” this shows that his father not only hurt Chris but also his other family members I believe this was what pushed Chris the most into leaving his comfortable upper-class life and family
Deacon Ritmiller Mrs. Moffat English 3-4 January 11, 2023 Was Chris Justified in Leaving? Who was Chris McCandless? He was a man that wanted an escape from life and his family in search of a greater adventure. While searching for peace and an escape from life, Chris ended up going on the greatest adventure of his life.
Chris also talked about a lot about how he wants to live his life to the fullest and how he's going to do that by divorcing his parents and going out into the wild and never having to see them ever again and he will never talk to them and he was proud of that. That was one of the reasons he was so invested in going out by himself into the wild and he had a lot of confidence in his ability to do so. He wrote a quote in his journal about living life to the fullest “It is the experience, the memories,The great triumphant joy of living to the fullest extent in which real meaning is found. God it's great to be alive!
He spoke about them in a very negative way and never showed them the love that a typical child would show towards their parents. In a letter that McCandless wrote to his sister, he stated that, “I’m going to have to be real careful not to accept any gifts from them in the future because they will think they have bought my respect” (21). So in other words, Chris didn’t respect his parents. His father secretly had another family and it caused Chris to lose the rest of the respect he had for them. Chris was a very stubborn person and he would rather dread on these issues, rather than open up to someone and forgive people for these types of
Chris made his trip very hard,he was divorcing everything out of his life and living primal. Chris burnt all of his money, he didn't bring the proper clothing for the weather of Alaska, and did not pack much food. On page 56 Chris wrote a letter to Ron encouraging him to do what he had done and live a full life of adventure. Ron did take Chris’s advice and what if Ron did get hurt or even dead like Chris, He was influencing people to take the risk of their life and putting others in danger, even after his death people wanted to live a life like
He wanted to go in there without really anything so that he can make things that were in the nature. “Chris didn’t think twice about risking his own life…”(Carine McCandless 128). I absolutely think that this quote about Chris is very true because he was so into finding new adventures to take, to enjoy and be happy with
I think he just wanted to pursue life in a different way. Chris was not seeing life the way anyone else was, so he decided to brush off into the wild and be free on his own. Though he did not survive, he was still a very bright, arrogant human being. Shaun Callarman states, “He had no common sense, and he had no business going into Alaska with his Romantic silliness.” Chris knew going into the wild that he did not have much survival skills, but that did not stop him from doing what he wanted to do because he did not care about society and was just completely over everything which was why he made the move to the wilderness.
He wanted full disconnect from the world, fully he didn't want no contact with anyone. “The fact that Chris never bothered to let his family, specifically his parents, know where he was when he was gone for two years” (Jessica Robbins, 2012) she says she doesn't believe he did it on purpose but i feel like he did, the fact he found the truth about his parents is when he felt like his parents now feel about having no clue to where he may be i think he wanted to make his parents feel some of the pain he's felt so he hides himself from the very start. For instance, in the movie you
