Nathan BADford Forrest: Morally Questionable, Militarily Genius
As once said by Ivan Figueroa-Otero,“There are no bad people, just those that have not yet realized their goodness” (Otero). Operating on the basis that this is factual, Nathan Bedford Forrest was one person who must have gone practically his entire life without realizing just how much good was buried deep within him. Nathan Bedford Forrest, 1821-1877, was a Confederate general during the United States Civil War and the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan (Glaze). Known by some as an excellent role model and the perfect example of Southern masculinity, and known by others as a cruel white-supremacist and menace to society, even today he is hailed as one of the most controversial

In the Confederate states, he was revered as an example of the perfect Southern gentleman, while Union abolitionists hated him for being such a prolific slave owner and racist. This controversy only spread around the official beginning of the Civil War, when in 1861, Forrest decided to enlist in the Confederate army, along with his youngest brother and young son. He originally enlisted as a private, but under the orders of the governor of Tennessee, he sent out a recruiting notice as a lieutenant colonel. He sent this advertisement through a local newspaper, and encouraged “none but those who desire to be actively engaged”, and who desired “a heap of fun and to kill some Yankees”, to join his command (Nathan Bedford Forrest, American Battlefield Trust). Despite having no previous military experience, he was quickly recognized as what some would even characterize as a “born military genius”, and was promoted multiple times, working his way up the ranks. While he remains an extremely controversial figure, what is not controversial is his pure military capability. In a short amount of time, Forrest became known as a brutally determined commander with a natural acuity for battlefield tactics. Over the course of the Civil War, he had 29 horses shot from under him, killed or seriously wounded at least 30 enemy …show more content…
The Ku Klux Klan, more commonly referred to as the KKK, is a secret hate organization that operates on the basis of white supremacy, committing extreme acts of violence towards African Americans and other minorities. Although Forrest later quit from the position and attempted to disband the group due to too much publicity, branches of the organization continued to live on, and still exist even today. Despite his efforts to deny any affiliation with the KKK, this combined with his previous history of racism and aggression thoroughly cemented the way most Americans viewed him. Even in current society, there are still many protests advocating against (or, less commonly, for) Forrest, and multiple locations where he has been commemorated have been forcibly renamed (Glaze). However, as put by a recent biographer of Forrest, “The reality is that over the length of his lifetime Nathan Bedford Forrest's racial attitudes probably developed more, and more in the direction of liberal enlightenment, than those of most other Americans in the nation's history” (Hurst,
“The American Civil War was the greatest war in American history. 3 million fought - 600,000 paid the ultimate price for freedom. And a war for freedom, it was. The desire for freedom traveled deeper than the color of skin and farther than the borders of any state.” The general of the civil war is Ulysses S. Grant, he was a general in the north and here from a site I have more information “It was Grant's understated brilliance that won The Civil War.
“The Most Skillful Military Tactician” Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson was one of the most ambitious and loyal leaders in the American Civil War. Many Historians admire the leadership he lead to the confederates. At the time during the American Civil War people in the Union even admired his leadership skills. Thomas lead many successful military tacticians throughout the battles he lead with most of them leading to confederate victories.

Lee’s Confederate Army at the Battle of Antietam later that year. Frustrated, Lincoln removed him from command of the Army of the Potomac in late 1862 • McClellan opposed the outright abolition of slavery, though he was equally committed
Nathan Bedford Forest was a well-known confederate general and early leader of the Ku Klux Klan (Tilinghast 1). He played an important part in the civil war and helped with many victories in several battles. Although he could not change the course for the confederate loss to the union, he did however leave a significant impact on the war. He was born on July 13, 1821, in Chapel Hill, Tennessee.
General Robert E. Lee General Robert E. Lee was a general for the confederacy. Lew was one of the most famous and most revered in the south. Hw is a leader who would always lead his own arm personally into battle. He would not just me on the outside behind the scenes he wanted to lead by his actions and he would be in the front line fighting with his soldiers. Michael Shaara portrays General Lee as a man in control.
August 1868; General Nathan Bedford Forrest told a Congressional committee after the war: He said to 45 colored fellows on my plantation that I was going into the army; and if they would go with me, if we got whipped they would be free anyhow, and that if we succeeded and slavery was perpetrated, if they would act faithfully with me to the end of the war, I would set them free. Eighteen months before the war closed I was satisfied that we were going to be defeated, and I gave those 45, or 44 of them, their free papers for fear I might be called. In late August, General Nathan Bedford Forrest gave an interview to a reporter. Forrest said of the black men who served with him: "... these boys stayed with me... and better Confederates did not live."
Robert E. Lee, Confederate hero or failure? _______________________________________________________________________ Robert E. Lee, Confederate General of the Confederacy. 1 As the Civil War drew to an end, former Confederate General Robert E. Lee returned home to Virginia with failure on his shoulders. Yet, the Southerners were not disappointed.
General George A. Custer: Civil War Career “I would be willing, yes glad, to see battle everyday.” This is one of George A. Custer’s famous quotes. Many would classify George A. Custer as one of the most foolish generals the United States military has ever held in its ranks, but what most people do not know is George Custer had a very significant and successful military career during the Civil War. George Custer had ambitions of being in the military at a very young age and had his sights set on West Point Military Academy. After his education, Custer would be thrown into the world of battle and he could not have been any happier Coming from humble beginnings, George Armstrong Custer didn’t have much as a child.
Bedford Forrest was very avid on the fact of slavery, he believed that black people were used as a labor class only. This reason could be why he participated in Civil Rights, or he could have participated for the unfair warfare he wanted to take part in. Forrest killed 300 black men before and denied his relation to the KKK which does bring up suspicion. He claimed he didn’t want to hurt any people, but yet he fought against them. Later on in 1969 he claimed how perverted the KKK was, quoting it used to be “honorable” before.
“Boom, pow” you hear as a bullet whirl right past you almost striking your heart, your men jaunt among you, with friends and family you know and love. It is your fault and your duty if they die, you can be a hero, a coward, or a man slaughterer. This was the everyday life of General Robert E Lee, he was almost always in the life of battle, this gentleman was a gutsy leader and an extraordinary man. Lee has sacrificed his daily life for his wife and his country, he contributed to amazing jousting techniques, many say he is one of the best generals in the world. People say that he is a bad man just because he fought for the south, but he argues that he does not have any regard in the method of slavery, but he could not let his home down.
Though it is the dream of most, few men have risen from the lines of poverty to the utmost remembered general of Virginia history. Many Americans know this general as being a humble man, “The louder people cheered, the more embarrassed he became” (Robertson 9). This man was General Thomas Johnathan Jackson, whose nickname “Stonewall” remains the most famous in Virginia history. Nevertheless, what a majority of people do not know is Jackson’s struggled rise to power and the “Gentleman of Manners” (Roberson 11) who placed his main studies on becoming a better person through a book of maxims. Growing up with his an uncle consumed with greed, Jackson partook in few opportunities of education and learning the prosperities of love.
Robert E. Lee’s (1807-1870) contribution to the United States as a war general and commander received positive connotations for his commitment, attitude and inspiration on the battlefield. However, it is debateable about his contributions because of Robert Lee’s association in the Civil War (1861-1865) to the Confederate Army that fought for the Southern States. Robert Lee lead many successful campaigns and battles including the following; helping defeat Mexican armies that lead to U.S land gains and westward expansion, battles against a more powerful army in the Civil War. Despite these achievements Lee’s loyalty for the Confederate Army that fought to uphold slavery undermines his success and is highly debateable about whether his contribution is justified or not. Robert Lee’s contributions to his nation begin before the Civil War in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848).
This man was the person who founded the Klu Klux Klan during the 1800's. In the movie, Forrest Gump is actually superimposed onto a picture from the movie, Birth of a Nation of Nathan Bedford Forrest as can be seen in the picture on the left. Birth of a Nation was one of the most controversial movies of all time as it was essentially a reverse where it portrayed evil as the hero. For example, the movie portrayed members of the KKK as heroes to African Americans. It showed how slavery and several other evil actions that have been committed were good things.
The Ku Klux Klan first emerged in Pulaski, Tennessee following the Civil War. As we know today, the mere mention of the Klan triggers fear as the KKK is known for its various tactics of violence that came in the form if lynchings, murders, and mutilations. Following their emergence, the KKK were quickly symbolized and portrayed as the protectors of the South, following the defeat of the Southern states in the Civil War and the beginning of the period of Reconstruction by the federal government (Gurr, 1989, p. 132). During the 1920s, the KKK achieved its greatest political success and growth outside of the South. During this period, the membership of the Klan heavily expanded to the states of Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Oregon, to which the KKK obtained two to two and one-half million members at its apex.
The Ku Klux Klan or KKK has created centuries of fear. They originated in Pulaski, Tennessee. The famous hate group was out to re establish white supremacy. The KKK has influenced local governments and people in power. It has also had an impact on American people and specifically black minorities.
