Bacon is one of America’s best well known foods. When people eat bacon, most of them don’t know how their food is produced and how the production effects the environment. Also, they don’t know what organic molecules we obtain from eating bacon and the health risks of eating too much of it. You will learn the steps taken to produce the meat and what environmental problems come from the process. Also, what kind of molecules we will get and the diseases you can catch form overconsumption of bacon. Pigs are mainly raised on grain, but some farmers have also supplemented the pig’s diet with vegetables like corn, peas and sweet potatoes to help improve the quality and quantity of meat. Some farmers would also use antibiotics like Aureomycin and Penicillin to increase the growth of pigs in a shorter period of time. By using these antibiotics, farmers save millions of dollars and produce more meat quicker. Now in days pigs are raised in environmentally controlled buildings rather than on fields or dirt. Now, eating one slice of bacon won’t kill you, but overconsumption can have a negative impact on your health. Other risks that come from red meat also give you a twenty percent increased chance of contracting a disease such as cancer or heart disease. To decrease risks, you can switch to minimal processed bacon without added nitrites. Overconsumption can lead to pulmonary disease and diabetes.
