Whitman Vs. Dickinson Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson are often considered the two most representative and influential American poets, and yet they are, in many respects, very different. They both opened the door for two different poetry styles for future poets to walk through. For many, those doors are like a fork on the road; it is one or the other, never both. Usually, after reading both Dickinson and Walt the reader knows exactly which one is their favorite. They differ in a sense of their life and writing styles, but still, occasionally had similar themes. Whitman and Dickinson led very different life styles. Dickinson was a reclusive woman who spent her life cooped up in her room. Whitman was the opposite. This greatly impacted their poetry. Dickinson’s quiet, lonely personality carries over to the tone and themes of her writing. In contrast, the tone of Whitman’s poetry was loud, expansive, and often times, boastful. Dickinson’s time alone in her room, I believe, allowed her more time to think of death, which resulted in her depressingly lonely tone that I heard in her poetry. Whitman, on the other hand, seemed more adventurous. His questionable sexuality shines through his poetry. His many promiscuous poems, gives the reader a sense of openness and honesty to his thoughts. …show more content…
For me, after Reading Dickinson’s poems, Whitman’s writing did not feel like poetry. Dickinson used short, structured lines that made up several poems. The short length allowed me to read the poem structurally and slowly which ultimately allowed me to interpret them better. Whitman’s use of free verse and repetition in long poems made the poems difficult to follow. The lack of structure made me feel like I was reading a long rant that was difficult to keep strait, and his use of anaphora in nearly all of his poems led me to boredom and
Whitman's autobiographical writing style was well-known, and many of his poems are inspired by his personal life. Similar
Each poet uses literary devices such as rhyme and metaphorical language to express their point of view. Whitman's "I Hear America Sing" delightfully
Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson use similar and different poetic devices. They were different and similar in their topics in the poems, “324” and “When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer”. They both talk about different and similar things and both come from the same era of writing which is the Romantic era. First when you read “324” by Emily Dickinson you can see that she has a rhyme scheme in the endings of each lines.
This writing expresses such a dramatic and romantic view. The background of Dickinson is much more rich and privileged. She was able to get a proper education at Harvard and lived a very realism kind of life. Her background effects her writing differently and makes her poetry sound much more proper, formal and depressing compared to Whitman’s brighter and more informal poetry. The Themes in these authors writings are also different.
Whitman was very open about his beliefs, although Emily Dickinson took a different approach. Dickinson was believed to be a Transcendentalist because of poems she wrote incorporating Transcendental ideas, one of these being “The Soul Selects Her Own Society”. Throughout the poem, Dickinson clearly referred to the person of topic as “her” rather than “his” on purpose, putting emphasis on the importance and coveted independence. Contrasting Whitman, she
Nature was another major influence on Walt Whitman’s writing. He would often observe the world around him and those notes would be put into a poem. This fed into the concept of the transcendentalist movement, but was still a little different. Whitman wanted to explore this aspect of writing because of his love for nature and the whole world around him. In his poem, When I Heard the Learned Astronomer, Whitman shows the difference nature can make on an individual.
Poetry, perhaps more than other genre of writing, often sparks controversy and discussion. Authors Walt Whitman and Langston Hughes are two authors in American Literature whose poetry is both debated and praised by critics. "I Hear America Singing" by Walt Whitman and "I, Too, Sing America" by Langston Hughes have sparked many discussions on their controversial content. Walt Whitman was the first of the two authors to write, followed by Langston Hughes who was influenced by Whitman's work. While Whitman's poem, "I Hear America Singing" reflects the happiness of the American people, the poem written by Hughes takes a different approach.
To begin with, Whitman throughout the poem shows a lot about what he believes and what he's opposed to as the states that he is both the body and the soul. By providing the lines he provides, it reflects his individualism as well as gives ideas about the topic of his poem as the title says it clear that it is about himself. Whithmand in the poem relates to the Romantic era as he mentions nature a lot making it obvious of his love for it. Romanticism era shown by Whitman is expressed in the poem as he says ïn the beginning, second stanza ¨I loafe and invite my soul, I learn and loafe at my ease observing a spear of summer
Emily Dickinson had a strong cold feeling toward society, so much so that she shut herself in a room and focused on expressing her emotions through poetry. At the
One way that Whitman conveys his poetry is through the eyes of the everyday man. In this period of American history, the civil war was ongoing, and his poetry did not shy away from the everyday
Emily’s poems are often stressful and depressing while Whitman’s poetry is graceful and candid. In addition, Whitman’s poetic style is opened while Dickinson is rather private and
Dickinson began writing early on, yet her first piece was published after her death. Dickinson’s writing can be describe as gloomy or dark, whereas Whitman’s is not. Throughout her work she portrays how life merely continues and exploits the darker, less noticeable meaning of daily life events. Her writing is extremely precise, she uses slant rhymes through her writing. By doing such she is able to put emphasis on certain words to convey the prominence of what is being said.
Whitman, in the end, uses his poems to express his inner feelings that he did not want to share directly to the
Whenever people talk about American literature, they have to mention Walt Whitman. Walt Whitman is one of the giants of American Literature and poetry, with Emily Dickinson. His style of writing split him away from the other poets of his time. Some even criticized the way her wrote and claimed that it was a disgrace and offends poetry. His use of free verse confused many people when they read his work.
Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman are the most representative and brilliant poets of the nineteenth century and in the American literature in general. However, we can also say that, between them, they have the most different styles of writing they can have, just as well as their lives. For example, as Christenbury (n.d.) stated, firstly that Walt Whitman was someone “[…] who struggled to get his poems published and who developed a broad admiring audience during his lifetime. In contrast, the reclusive Emily Dickinson died unknown to the world of poetry, leaving a box full of unpublished poems”. Nevertheless, we can find some similarities in their lives, for example, both of them lived in a difficult historical period: on the one hand Emily Dickinson, who was born the 10th of December of 1830 and on the other hand, Walt Whitman, who was born the 31st of May of 1819, lived the period of the American civil war.
