Zika virus has made it’s way to the U.S. after starting out in Central and South America. Mosquitoes are the carriers of the virus which causes a problem for many that live in the Southeast United States and specifically in Miami Florida since there is an abundance of the nasty blood suckers there. Scientist however may have found a way to stop the spread of this disease a new genetically modified mosquito called OX513A which I believe is the way that we will be to stop the spread Zika virus and here is why. Zika virus is an illness that is spread through mosquitos when they bite you. Many people that are infected with Zika virus will have no or very mild symptoms. Some symptoms that you can expect from Zika are a fever, rash, as well as joint and muscle pain. This all doesn't sound too bad however if a pregnant woman contracts Zika we have problems. Pregnant women can pass Zika to their babies which causes birth defects that could result in death. OX513A is a male mosquito that has been genetically engineered in a way that when it tries to reproduce with your average wild female mosquito it messes with her ability to reproduce offspring that will survive. Without the ability to reproduce it could stop the Zika Virus dead in its tracks. The FDA is still looking into this as a viable option for mosquito control. Following the outcome of the …show more content…
First of all this is not only time that a trial run of these mutant mosquito has been done. They have done similar trails in Brazil, the Cayman Island, and Panama. All of these trails have resulted in high success rates in the Cayman Island they were able to reduce the disease carrying mosquitos by 80% and in Brazil by up to 95% . In Brazil they have even agreed to open a breeding factory to produce OX513A with the promise of being able to save 300,000 people. If we could get these kind of results in the U.S. this could be
During the epidemic of the Salem Witch Trials, that took place during 1692, 19 people were sentenced to death. Even though this occurred many centuries ago, there are several examples of epidemics that occur in our society today. The Crucible and Zika virus ‘spreading explosively,’ WHO leader says are both examples of texts that clearly show the theme of epidemic. In The Crucible, there were many people that were accused and punished for witchcraft. In the article Zika virus, it talks about the Zika virus and how quick it’s spreading.
This notion came to the surface by using mice as test subjects that revealed the lost of stem cells once getting the virus. In adult’s who have Zika signs include: headache, fever, rash and mild flu-like symptoms. The main reason for all the worry that is expounded is if the virus lodges in the brain of a fetus it would be disastrous. It causes babies to have small heads also called microcephaly that hinders learning ability. Not to mention stem cells are put to risk as a new study shows.
The role of government to protect the health of pregnant women and their babies is by continuing to fund in the organization of contraception of Zika Virus such Planned Parenthood. By providing every pregnant woman in the organization, the fund will provide every pregnant woman or mother essentials needs to give their child a normal lifestyle. If the government continue to do so, it will help benefit those that are ill and prevent future pregnant women. This disease is preventable by educating everyone about what Zika virus is and can do to a body, wearing mosquito repellent and long pants, and travel places where there is no outbreak of
Americans have come to fear the West Nile virus. Because it is transmitted by the common mosquito. 5. Although my Spanish is not very good. I can read the language with ease.
While Zika produces mild, flu-like symptoms for non-pregnant individuals, it can cause severe, life long,
It's Saturday morning in the month of June, as Hank Richards is waking up, he turns on the news only to find that today is expected to reach a record high of 115°. As Hank is coming out of the shower he is listening to the news and all of the sudden it cuts off abruptly and then after a 10 second delay, the President of the United States appears on the screen. “Attention citizens of The United States of America the country has been attacked by a very deadly and serious virus. We are currently working on ways to learn more about this virus, but it is known to be very deadly and can be very contagious, so it is best to stay indoors at all cost if you have any information about this virus please contact us.” As Hank is finishing up in the bathroom
Also the Zika Virus is not just in Florida “Zika Virus has been identified in several countries in Central and South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean since 2015 (floridahealth).” And “Outbreaks have also been reported in Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific
My Omi, which means grandmother in German, often tells me stories about when she was young living in Germany. As I got older, I became more curious about the many life experiences she encountered. The stories she told me were so surreal I could not even imagine living in her shoes. Her shared moments ranged from stories of her grandmother in the concentration camp to her meeting my grandfather and moving to the United States.
One of the biggest summer nuisance would be the mosquito, but more specifically the Ades aegypti mosquito. The Aedes aegypti is the vector for yellow fever and the cause of the numerous deaths. In her book The American Plague: The Untold Story of Yellow Fever, The Epidemic the Shaped Our History, Molly Caldwell Crosby presents the idea that the mosquito is not just the only reason an epidemic occurred in the 18th century. This story accounts for the disease that broke out across the world and nearly destroyed almost all of North America’s population, which some believe could have been avoided by simple quarantine analysis and sanitary methods.
Although the two viruses can cause permanent damage, they both have differences. ZEBOV has emerged into the human population throughout Africa. Not only has it infected humans, but has also caused massive die-offs of chimpanzees and gorillas. Experiences with Ebola Zaire are somewhat similar to the Marburg and Sudan virus that will be introduced later. “Ebola Zaire (EBO-Z) killed two hundred and eighty of the three hundred and eighteen people infected Yambuku Mission Hospital (YMH) used the same needles with different patients.
Environmental factors are the source of increasing tick-borne diseases in humans and animals. This can be seen through the published words of Doctor Manny Alvarez, who is a credible source. Alvarez (2017) states, “Many researchers believe that rising global temperatures are allowing ticks populations to move northward and expanding the tick feeding season” (para. 6). The expansion of the tick feeding season enables more tick diseases to be spread to more humans and animals. In an interview with Christie Kindred, a Speech Language Pathologist, she stated that climate change contributes to the rise of tick-borne diseases.
In pregnant women, the virus can cause miscarriage, stillborn babies, or babies with birth defects. One serious birth defect caused by Zika is microcephaly. In microcephaly

Zika is a perfect example of how infectious diseases and agents can quickly spread throughout the world due to the ease of travel, and therefore poses a major public health threat. The public health goal is to now figure out how to stop the spread of Zika by possibly eliminating the reservoir and vector, the mosquito. Prevention of Zika also depends on educating at risk populations/geographical areas on the disease and how to avoid becoming infected. There are also a multitude of neglected tropical diseases in parts of the world that receive little attention and therefore little research to prevent mortality and
The main diseases that run through Costa Rica include Malaria, Dengue, Fever, Chagas Disease, Leptospirosis, Zika and Yellow Fever. According to Pan American Health Organization, in 2006-2010, 84,443 cases of Dengue disease were reported, of which 471 were serious. Costa Rica is considered a high-risk area for Malaria, which encompasses approximately 70% of the home population. Leptospirosis has the highest morbidity of any disease in which has caused a total of 46 deaths from 2006-2010, conferring from the Pan Health Organization. Costa Rica health officials have been in tight guard and have cautioned future travelers informing them that cases of the Zika virus have been confirmed.
