Apocalyptic Literature is “literature that expounds prophetic revelations, and especially that predicts the destruction of the world.” (Apocalyptic Literature. Merriam Webster’s Encyclopedia of Literature). Throughout history, there has been many reasons and ways writers use to give us an idea of apocalyptic literature, to some, it is quite confusing with each writer talking about their idea of the apocalypse based on their individual religion. To better understand the apocalypse, articles are dealing with Christianity and The Book of Revelations, Medieval Jewish Apocalyptic theories and The Church of England or better known in the 17th century asThe Beast of England. A related featured of this literature is the sense that historical and messianic events have a life or their own, independent of the behavior of human beings.” (Jones). The Jewish learned some of their idea about the apocalypse from medieval times, but most of their beliefs are somewhat similar the beliefs of Christians. “ The messianic speculation found in these and other works is characterized by several distinctive features, which when taken together, provide a shape to Jewish medieval apocalyptic literature.” (Jones). From a literary point of view, “the apocalyptic treatises are, like their themes, extravagant, They reveal in fantastic descriptions of their heroes and antiheroes, richly narrating the events that they show, and often regard their protagonists as symbols for the cosmic forces of good and evil.” (Jones). As in the Book of Revelation, when it spoke on how Jesus marched with the forces of good to go against the forces of evil. Now as of getting into the medieval of the apocalypse, Medieval apocalyptic literature had at least two important historical consequences. “First, it played a highly significant role in shaping the vision that Jews had concerning the events leading up to the end of days. These religions that are listed may say they support or believe in the same idea of apocalypse. Well anyone can say this and that, but it is the research that provides the answer. For example, Christians believe in the revelations which means that they believe Jesus will rise, wage war on hell and there begins the apocalypse well that is what “ Christians” believes. Now the way the English Church their idea of apocalypse may also be war, but they take the negative meaning of apocalypse and turn it into a positive. It is clear that John Wyndham wrote The Chrysalids as a warning for today’s society, based on the comparisons that are drawn between the society of Waknuk, the Old People, Sea land, and our current society. More specifically, the current technological advancements, the existence of fundamentalist groups, and the slowly changing concept of “freedom of speech”. The events of Tribulation serve as a warning to today’s society. Many current day countries have nuclear weaponry, chemical weaponry, bombs, and other massively destructive tools at their disposal. Comparably, the Old People had very advanced technology and the reader knows that a nuclear war has taken place based on the existence of such extreme mutations seen in both plants and people.
In this article, Yesilbas, Trendacosta, and Newitz, list thirteen examples of Armageddon stories that teach lessons about the real world and its end. One example they examine is Logan’s Run. This book depicts survivors of war, overpopulation, and pollution living in a city sealed off from the forgotten world. However, life and death are controlled by a computer and when a person turns 30 they are disintegrated and reborn. If you choose not to die, you will be referred to as a “runner”, a criminal hunted down and murdered by the police.

For centuries civilization has evolved and spread across the globe, causing for many cultures, traditions, and especially religions to develop. Even in ancient societies such as Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt, religion was one of, if not, the most important aspect of an individual 's life. The religions found in Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt would shape how relationships within society functioned, including how communities related themselves to the divine and the role of leaders and priests. Furthermore, these religions would also affect how each of these societies thought about justice and even influenced attitudes toward the afterlife.
Religion often times is depicted as a specific institution that follows the teaching of the Bible, Torah, or the Quran. People fail to realize that religion can stand as anything for any particular person depending on their values. These values bring about sacred symbols, object, or systems to
Similarly, in “By the Waters of Babylon” in another future, “the ground there burns forever,” because of the nuclear explosion based off man's own technological error (581). Religion can be linked to having an imagination and believing. Whereas in religion, facts are harder to come by due to rationalism and reflection. This is foreshadowing in the novel because it deals with religion and whether to believe or not. It also deals with Pi’ story, and whether the reader
Prophets and prophecies abound in Western literature. From the ancient texts designed for people of all walks of life— such as Homer’s Odyssey and Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, to more modern works targeted to specific audiences— such as the Harry Potter and Gregor the Underlander series, authors have employed the literary device of prophecies to entice the reader to stay with the story. Instead of telling the reader outright what is going to happen, or how a situation will play out, the author offers a prophecy of some kind to the reader. Such prophecies are generally ambiguous, and often the reader is left confused as to what is actually going to happen. By using this technique, the author piques the interest of the reader yet allows for the
During that time, people held deep fears of the unknown, demonic, and supernatural. One particular aspect of the text that may strike us as surprising, strange, and even bizarre is the belief
Years passed, and the Gods did nothing. Crimes worsened, and death became imminent. Hope slipped from many's grasps, and belief left entirely for others. In mere seconds, our futures reduced to
Our forefathers lived in a similar time, most of the prophets looked ahead and saw the millennium kingdom, the dawning of a new day. Looking at the book of Revelation we have a sneak preview as to how God will bring things to an end. We believe that Gods word is infallible, we believe that God cannot lie, we also believe God is above the discoveries of science. We believe God above the threats of global warming. Most importantly we stand on God’s word that tells us not to walk by sight but to walk by
During the time period religion was still a key factor in people's lives. Either you believed in God or a higher figure or you didn't mention religion. Many, people in Europe had frantically moved in anticipation to this disaster.
World literature has been a fundamental part of understanding our society, it has archived and developed the events and thoughts that made the world in which we live today. Literature is typically linked with philosophy and early thinkers, who questioned who we are, where do we came from and what is our purpose in life. Even though, the study of philosophy has given us the chance to understand more about this topic, I personally think that over the years, it provides more questions than answers, and the more we dig in, the more questionings will show up. Our first reading on Poetics by Aristotle, focuses mainly on Greek tragedy and epic poetry. Tragedies started as religious ceremonies performed at festivals in honor to the god Dionysus, but over time it has changed into a secular.
Before discussing the key characteristics of apocalyptic literature, it must be noted that it bears many similarities to the prophetic genre. Indeed, scholars suggest that apocalyptic is a development of Jewish prophetic literature. Mutual characteristics include the communication of God’s word for the present age, the themes of impending judgement and salvation, and the use of symbolism.
