The city of Los Angeles is a huge. Population size 3.9 million. In this city there are so many murders, retaliation and crimes. Someone living in Los Angeles murder is an everyday thing. It happens so often that no one is surprised after hearing about it. The laws that the city enforces don’t do much because they are broken everyday. Jill Leovy, the author of Ghettoside: A True Story of Murder in America, made it her mission to spread awareness about the crimes that are being ignored in Los Angeles everyday.
Leovy’s first attempt to spread awareness was the online crime website. This website was a method of Leovy’s to alert people about the crime in Los Angeles. The Homicide report website has a picture of the deceased, their age, a description
A civil rights lawyer, Mary Howell, included her input by saying, “We had police officers involved in kidnappings, rape, murders, drugs, bank robberies. There was a guy who used to do, like, bank robberies on his lunch hour. It was just astonishing- at one point we had four police officers facing first-degree murder charges” (Kahn, 2010). Following the spur of bad behavior from the officers, a new mayor and police chief were instated into the system, hoping to bring reform to the city. After holding office for some time, numerous officers were fired, the murder rate dropped, and relations improved.
“...Much of the recent crime increase threatens the vitality of America’s cities–and thousands of lives–it is not, in itself, the greatest danger in today’s war on cops. The greatest danger lies, rather, in the delegitimation of law and order itself’ (Mac Donald). In the book “The War on Cops: How the New Attack on Law and Order Makes Everyone Less Safe,” published in the year of 2016, author Heather Mac Donald provides credible evidence to expand on her viewpoint of our country’s current criminal crisis. In addition to “The War on Cops, Mac Donald has written two other books. Her works “Are Cops Racist?”

This is Laney Bjerke here to tell you about the murder at apartment 224 in Hollywood on December 31st, estimated time 3:10. I am a CSI Investigator, ready for anything. I work as hard as I can to solve all crimes, no matter how small. I was called in because at a party on December 31st, there seems to have been a murder. I went to apartment 224 and found a woman’s dead body near a desk with white powder, which I later found out was cocaine, on it.
Baltimore, a city in Maryland, not only known for its numerous sightseeings, but also for the scandalous cases happening around the city since the 1950's. One of the cases that caught people’s eye was the killing of Hae Min Lee, a former Woodlawn high school’s senior. Almost 2 decades ago, Hae Min Lee at 18 years old went missing on January 13, 1999. After 4 weeks her body was found. Baltimore has one of the highest homicides cases in America and 47% of them are not solved.
Recently the media has been covering stories of the amount of black lives being taken by the police. Statistics have shown that is not the case, that the loss of black lives are due to “black-on-black crime.” In this article, the mayor of New Orleans, Mitch Landrieu makes an effect to understand the root of this problem, of why African Americans are killing each other. The problem of race has been a continuous issue in America. New Orleans happens to be one of the top city in America with high rate of murder.
Increasing Awareness of Unjust Police Shootings Through The Hate U Give The Chicago Police Department kills African Americans at an annual rate of 8.9 per million and Caucasians at 0.4 per million (Police Brutality Center). It is saddening to think that there is such a statistical difference in murder rates just because of the color of their skin. In Angie Thomas’s The Hate U Give, she writes a story of a character named Starr that goes through her life between her neighborhood which is African American to her predominantly white school where she experiences instances of police brutality and racism such as the murder of her childhood friend Khalil.
“He [Billy Weaver] pressed the bell… it must have been at once because he hadn’t even had time to take his finger from the bell button--the door swung open and the woman [Edna Perkins] was standing there” (Dahl, 11). From the beginning, Edna Perkins has the entire murder planned out. Ms. Perkins knows Billy is coming, she is certain about her first move, and she is assertive about her last move (first degree murder). It is close to impossible for Ms. Perkins to be insane and have successfully committed murder in the way she did. Not only did she commit this crime on Billy, but also two other guests.
The “Code of the Street,” materialized in American’s major metropolitan inner city communities’ predominately homogeneous African American neighborhoods because segments of this population felt disenfranchised from mainstream American due to lack of economic opportunities as well as the distrust between citizens in these communities toward law enforcement. The common belief in among a minority of the population in these neighborhoods is that the criminal justice system is bias toward poor minority groups and every person must fend for himself or herself. Therefore, urban communities have developed a set of socially acceptable norms within these distressed communities coined the “Code of the Street.”
Article 1 In the article “Police Violence and Citizen Crime Reporting in the Black Community” written by Matthew Desmond, Andrew V. Papachristos, and David S. Kirk, discusses police misconducts causes communities to be unsafe for citizens especially the black community. Many black men have experience racial profiling or police brutality in Milwaukee and this continues on to a point where calling 911 for help is no longer a choice for individuals to use due to a publicized case of police violence against an defenseless man, Frank Jude. Jude, as stated in the article, was unarmed, accused, stripped naked, and beat by the police brutally. This terrifying incident caused many to protests against the police force. Desmond, Papachristos, and
Contrary to the common belief, crime has been on the decline for the past three decades. Yet, news and media have been covering crime more than ever, resulting in the public belief that crime is at an all time high. The sharp drop in crime since the early 1990s has left experts curious to discover the reasons for the decrease in crime. As I compare the article Understanding Why Crime Fell in the 1990s: Four Factors that Explain the Decline and Six that Do Not by Steven D. Levitt and the article Evaluating Contemporary Crime Drop(s) in America, New York City, and Many Other Places by Eric P. Baumer and Kevin T. Wolff, I will briefly describe the articles, compare their agreements and disagreements, as well as discuss my personal preferences.
The Murder of the Hollywood Starlet A young hollywood starlet was brutally murdered in 1947 with no killer identified to this day. This is real case that still puzzles investigators today. The woman in question was named Elizabeth Short, but is more widely known as the “Black Dahlia.” She was given this nickname by the press because of the sheer, black clothing she tended to wear (“The Black Dahlia Murder - Read All about it in FBI Records.”).
The Devil in the White City Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair that Changed America In the book the author tone switches from both casual and intense, as show through the two main characters, Burnham and Holmes Daniel Burnham was the architect who got a contract to build the Chicago World’s Fair with John Root in 1893, however John Root dies before the contraction even starts. The author describes the Devil in the White city as how wherever there is good, there is also evil. The purpose of the Chicago world Fair being built was to show the world the greatness of America. During the 1980s the United States was not in a good position, economical wise.
The 30 largest cities in America are seeing an increase in their homicide rates, and this includes places like San Antonio and Memphis, not typically known for this type of violence. Seven hundred and thirty two murders were projected in Chicago
Pacoima is a city with five or six active gangs. Here, the low-income neighborhood carries a sense of fear and despair that permeate the air. In the summer of 2016, after having mustered the right confidence, I took on a summer job at Hubert H. Humphrey Recreation Center - home to one of the city’s most deadliest gang, the Humphrey Boys. Ironically, that summer would be the park community’s turning point, hosting the safest, most loving, and consistent 2016 Summer Night Lights (SNL). At first, the despair stuck with me, and the job terrified me.
