The desire to have a good name is the goal of most townspeople in Salem 1692 . In fact, that pursuit may have been the cause for all the events that occurred. John Proctor, Abigail Williams, and Reverend Parris all have an ongoing concern for their reputation that spurs their actions and increases the effects of the Salem Witch Trial in 1692.
John Proctor obsesses over his name’s sake and dies to preserve and purify it. He signed his name to a piece of paper declaring that he inhabited a witch like lifestyle. When the judge asked John to give him the paper, John refused and said, “Damn the village! I confess to God, and God has seen my name on this! It is enough!” (Miller 132).Towards the end of the argument and still refusing to sign the paper that tells the townspeople he has succomb to the wicked ways he shouts. In his pursuit to protect his name chaos ensues. He tries to attain information from Abigail about the dancing and says, “It must come out- my enemies will bring it out. Let me know what you done there. Abigail, do you understand that I have many enemies?” (Miller 10). Reverend Parris remains concerned and begins to involve more enemies, those people who believe he is a hypocrite. "There is a faction that is sworn to drive me from my pulpit. Do you understand that?” (Miller 10). “And I pray you feel the weight of truth upon you, for now my ministry’s at stake, my ministry and perhaps your cousin’s life” (Miller 11). He becomes so exasperated that he begins threatening Abigail. All the weight is on Abigail to tell the truth or lie and failure to make the right choice could lead to multiple people being killed. Salem is a small city located at the North Shore of Massachusetts and it is in the county of Essex. When visiting I decided to interview Mr. John Proctor about the Salem Witch Trials and what he believed was happening. My goal was to decide if John Proctor was lying throughout any of the interview and if he had any involvement in the witch trials.
Reverend Samuel Parris played a significant role in the Salem witch trials, and many historians believe that he is the most responsible for the hysteria that swept through the town. There are several reasons why Parris is considered to be the most responsible for the witch trials. First, Parris was a divisive figure in the community. He was a strict Puritan minister who was known for his fire-and-brimstone sermons.
In the book The Crucible by Arthur Miller preserving one’s reputation was important to many of the story’s characters. Three of the characters that found preserving their reputation important were John Proctor, Abigail Williams, and Mary Warren. John Proctor was a well respected man in Salem. The town’s people thought highly of him. When he was accused of witchery he denied it.
In 1692, the year of the witch hunt in Salem, Massachusetts, fright, and vengeance were among the people. The people being an unforgiving group of people during the time were more prone to causing conflict than they were resolving it. In the historical fiction “The Crucible,” by Arthur Miller, many conflicts prevail in the plot of the story. Some of the many conflicts include Elizabeth Proctor and Abigail Williams, John Proctor and Reverend Parris, and Reverend Parris versus society. John Proctor has a burning dislike for Reverend Parris, for he won’t even let him baptize his last son.

Parris had attended Harvard University a few years prior before leaving to pursue a career in ministry. At the time, the village of Salem was divided into two different parts: Salem Town and Salem Village. The two parts of the village were set apart according to their economy, class, and character.

In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, the characters Elizabeth Proctor and Abigail Williams display how their development impacts the reader. Elizabeth grows while Abigail does not, as displayed through their reaction to the affair, how they face their problems, and how they perceive opinions of others. First, Elizabeth shows growth through how she reacts to the affair her husband has.
Arthur Miller’s The Crucible aims to place characters in such difficult positions that they begin to consider death, just as Hamlet did before ultimately realizing “conscience makes cowards of us all.” By this, Hamlet implies that knowledge of the horror of death can persuade a human to do anything, as they are almost subconsciously obligated to avoid the premature coming of this inevitable end. Hamlet’s statement is relevant to The Crucible in that the townsfolk will seemingly do anything to avoid “social suicide” or the destruction of their carefully constructed reputations in the small community.
