John Wayne Gacy was born on March 17, 1942, at Edgewater Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. He was the son among two sisters born to Polish and Danish parents. Gacy was raised Catholic and attended Catholic schools his whole life. He was well liked by all his faculty, coworkers, friends and fellow boy scouts. His childhood seemed normal on the outside, however his relationship with his father was far from perfect. His father saw Gacy as a disappointment in several ways. When Gacy was 11 years old he was involved in an accident on a swing set that caused a blood clot in his head that wasn't discovered until the age of 16. Gacy’s father became an alcoholic and repeatedly would beat his wife and children, primarily Gacy. His family problems eventually took their tole on his schoolwork. After attending four different high schools, and eventually dropping out, Gacy moved to Las Vegas. He held a job at a funeral home as a janitor in order to save enough money in order to someday return to Chicago. Once he returned home he enrolled in a Business College and eventually graduated with a degree. Things seemed to be looking up for Gacy until coworkers were starting to notice Gacy's interest in men, and more particularly in young boys. Oddly enough, it was the disappearance of a boy named Robert Piest that would lead to the discovery of over 27 young men hidden under Gacy’s crawlspace. He was 15 years old when he mysteriously disappeared outside of a pharmacy where he worked. His mother was in the car waiting for him. Robert had told her he had to meet quickly with a contractor that had offered him a job and would be right back. He was never seen alive again. When the police were notified, they did the most logical thing and went straight for the contractor that had supposedly offered Robert the job, John Wayne Gacy. The police had told him about the disappearance and asked him to come down to the station for some questions. Gacy refused, but agreed to meet them later on. Gacy gave a statement saying that he had no information about the boys disappearance, and was released immediately with no further questions. However the lead detective in the case was not so sure. He ordered a background check on Gacy and was astonished by his findings. On December 13, 1978 the detective got a search warrant and searched Gacy’s home while he was away. Inside the home they found plenty of evidence that shed some light on Gacy’s dark side. Such items included: books with homosexual and pornographic themes, marijuana, a high school ring with the initials J.A.S, a stained section of rug, nylon rope, handcuffs and clothes that were too small for Gacy.
