Kettle Moraine Scholarship Essay I am an undergraduate student at the University of Wisconsin River Falls majoring in Horticulture focusing in Landscape Design with a 15 credit Business Emphasis. I am applying for this scholarship for two reasons. First, I am applying for this scholarship due to my financial need to pay for my tuition. I have paid for my entire tuition on my own with the help of loans, grants, scholarships, and paying out of pocket. The previous scholarships I have earned in high schools were the Viroqua Volleyball Scholarship and Judy Olson Follow Your Dreams Scholarship. During my sophomore year of college, I was awarded the Bob Walkoc Memorial Grant through the Wisconsin Landscape Contractors Association in Milwaukee, WI. Also, I was awarded the Pi Alpha Xi-Alpha Zeta Chapter Scholarship and the River Falls Garden Club Scholarship through the University of Wisconsin River Falls CAFES scholarship banquet. I have always had a passion for drawing, painting, and crafting. Within the landscaping aspect of horticulture, I plan to focus more on the Hardscaping portion. I have done some Hardscaping on a few friends’ properties. I absolutely loved the planning, designing, and the construction of the project. Given the opportunity to step back and admire a piece of art representing my landscaping abilities is truly extraordinary. Transferring skills from my college and learning experiences to prepare a functional landscape for a client, presenting it to the client, and selling a landscape plan would be the best feeling in the world. My business emphasis will allow me to know the underlining basic requirements and strategies of owning a successful

The Yadkin River is one of the longest rivers in North Carolina. The Yadkin Pee Dee River Basin is North Carolina’s second largest basin. It is very important to a variety of habitats and has been the site of human civilization for at least 12,000 years, earning it the nickname of the ‘‘Tigris and Euphrates of the Carolinas.’’ It was formerly called the Sapona River, after the people that originally inhabited its banks, until the name was changed between 1709 and 1733.
In the United States, during the eighteen-hundreds’, a small group of people believed that slavery was immoral and did many things to abolish it. John Brown, a Caucasian male who was part of this group of people, did two things that many people in United States history didn’t have the passion to do. John Brown’s life was very interesting: His early life and transition to adulthood, his decision to fight for the cause, his actions of violence in Kansas and Harper’s Ferry, along with, the long-lasting effects of these actions led to his hanging. These events were pivotal to the beginning of the Civil War. “John Brown was born in Torrington, Connecticut, on May 9, 1800, five months after the death of George Washington”(Marrin,7).
Although Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid displays some of the typical aspects of the Western genre, such as having action and adventure and taking place in an untamed frontier, it mostly depicts aspects that are not typical of the Western genre. Unlike many Westerns, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is not overly violent. There are some shooting scenes, but the movie is mostly focused on the debacles that Butch Cassidy and Sundance get themselves into. In the beginning of the film Butch and Sundance encounter many situations that could have turned into a big shooting scene but they don’t. An example of this is when they were being chased down, and instead of confronting them and having it turn into a big fight, they instead flea to Bolivia where they won’t be tracked.
I’m standing in the center of our camp at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. The British are 20 miles away in Philadelphia. Men surround me, shivering, starving, and covered in their own vomit. I know I do not want to be a part of this madness. The winter of 1777-1778 has been rough enough already.

From Misfortune to Oregon From around 1811 to 1840, a 2,200-mile trail was made, going from Missouri to Oregon. This trail was made by fur trappers and traders, and would soon be called The Oregon Trail. In 1846, thousands of men, women, and children began traveling to Oregon along this road. They had high hopes of finding fertile land, where they could set up large farms.
When I first stumbled upon this scholarship from the American Legion, I knew right away that I wanted to apply for it because of the similarities between what the American Legion and what I both stand for. I few words that I would use to describe the American Legion and myself would be, service, integrity, and hard work. These are a few things that I take very seriously and attempt to involve in my life everyday. I pride myself on these high character traits and try to use them in my community, during sporting events, at home, and at my school. I also implement these traits while fulfilling my civic duties by doing service around my community.

The Cullowhee Creek is a small source of water that runs through Western Carolina University. The creek begins further up the mountain, then runs into the Tuckasegee River, which then flows into the Tennessee river, then the Mississippi, and finally, into the Gulf of Mexico. In this activity, we monitored the creek to determine its health. In the Riparian Inventory activity, we rated various aspects of the creek.

The Oregon Trail didn’t follow a single set path. While most Oregon bound emigrants traveled a route that passed by landmarks in Missouri Kansas Wyoming and Oregon there was never just one set of wagon ruts leading west. Frontier explorers and fur trappers blazed the rough outlines of the Oregon Trail in the early 19th century, but the route was initia considered too demanding for women, children or covered wagon to navigate. That year Marcus helped lead the first major wagon train of around one Thousand Settler along the Oregon trail an exodus now know as the great migration. Traffic soon skyrocketed and by the late 1840 's and early 1850 upwards of 50 thousand people were using the trail each year.
The fresh air smells like a mix of mucky water, and of hamburgers and hot dogs cooking on a grill outside. A calm breeze sweeps across the lake as soon as I step onto the dock. The view of Platte Lake is all around me when I jump on the rusty, old dock. Off to the side of the dock next to a tree sits an antique paddle boat. Old stickers cover the boat, but most have peeled off like paint chips off of an old fence.
