Jacob Egli Mrs. Thomas English 2 April 26, 2023 Laura Dean Essay In the graphic novel, “Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me” by Mariko Tamaki, there is a constant conflict between the main character and her girlfriend Laura Dean. This conflict doesn’t start when they first meet at a school dance in gym class but there are showing signs. One of these signs is the panel on the top of page 69. In this panel, the girlfriend Laura is striking a pose and saying, ‘Because I’m irresistible’ in response to the main character asking why she should watch a movie with Laura. Laura is in a darker shade of gray and there is a pink background in this panel also. This panel appears because Laura broke up with the main character and the main character went …show more content…
It is a vicious cycle that she can’t, or doesn’t want to end. This panel gives us insight into Laura Dean’s thoughts and personality. With these few words, we can see that she is vain, self-centered, and doesn’t think of others. Even if this was supposed to be said in a joking manner it is still a problem and this situation could have been avoided if the main character saw these signs. Of course, this doesn’t take the blame off Laura Dean, she still shouldn’t act that way towards their girlfriend, or at least they could have talked about it. This idea of cheating and Laura being self-centered continues throughout the book. I believe the purpose of this panel is to show us the things that I just stated, that Laura is self-centered and that there were signs of this long ago. I think that this is also shown so obviously to show that there is blame on both sides, to show that yes, Laura is not the best girlfriend but the main character is the one getting back with her every time. This toxic relationship isn’t just affecting the two of them it is also affecting the main character’s friends, as she says on page 278, “Your a sh**** girlfriend. But also when I am with you I am a sh**** friend.” Of course, she only realizes this at the end of the

heard a metallic click, and I froze.”” (Butler,36) Dana also shows the same feelings in her second visit as well. While she’s hiding in the bushes, she experienced the white men whipped a black man. As she quotes, The white men, “hustled the man to a tree so close to me that I lay flat on the ground, stiff with fear. With just a little bad luck, one of the whites could spot me, or, in the darkness, fail to spot me and to step on me.

In the novel “Hate List”, Valerie Leftman is to return to school five months after her boyfriend, Nick shot several fellow classmates in the school cafeteria. Most of the people shot were on a list Valerie and Nick made and called the hate list. A majority of the school community believes that Valerie was aware of Nick’s plan to kill the kids (she wasn’t aware) despite the fact that Valerie saved someone’s life and got shot in the process. In “Hate List”, Valerie and everyone around her must pick up the broken pieces of fear and sadness after the tragedy. This creates a story that is both universal and so unique that it will leave the reader changed on a fundamental level.
Her emotional and social performance relies on fickle solidity that influences those around her. After Heather recommended Melinda seek professional help for her depression after breaking up their friendship, Melinda asks, “Isn’t that what friends are for, helping each other out in bad times?” (106). I interpret this quote as a tactic of manipulation, with the intention of making Heather feel sorry for defending her own well-being. Though Heather, as a social climber, broke their friendship for the wrong reasons, Melinda’s reaction is enough for me to understand her morals and perspectives on what friendship means to her.
She shows her low self-esteem referring to her leg when she tells Jim, “To me it sounded like-thunder!” (The Glass Menagerie 1.7.35-36). Not only does she have low self-esteem, but her self-esteem is so low that she could not handle finishing Business School as she drops out. Through Laura’s small lies to Amanda, her mother, Amanda finds out and explains while quoting Laura’s teacher, “ And she said, “….. The first time we gave a speed-test, she broke down completely- was sick at the stomach and almost had to be carried into the wash-room!...”.”

A Smart Hero There are many important figures that fought for civil rights, but one that stood out to me was Katherine Johnson. She was one of the first African American women to work at NASA and was very intelligent. Katherine had many values but there are 3 values that she had that were very important. Katherine Johnson displays courage, determination, and excellence when she started working at NASA when racism and gender was still a big problem.
She begins to realize within time that unfortunately she has taken
