The Lewis and Clark expedition was comparable with that of the journey to the moon. Odds against them, Lewis and Clark set out to reach the Pacific Ocean overland the North American continent while documenting their journey and taking scientific measurements along the way. In his book, Undaunted Courage, published 1996 by Simon & Schuster in New York, Stephen E. Ambrose uses journals and letters written by Lewis along with other historical documents to provide an accurate account of the expedition. Stephen E. Ambrose wanted to show in his thesis that, the contribution that Thomas Jefferson made by pushing for exploration of the west and through picking Meriwether Lewis, to head the Corps of Discovery was vital to the success of the expedition. …show more content…
Lewis was born in Virginia on a plantation that his family owned. When the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794 broke out, George Washington called for volunteers to join an army to put a stop to the rebellion; Lewis was on of the first to enlist. Through out his military carrier he was always moving around to different states. He became very familiar with America. Upon Thomas Jefferson’s election in 1801 Meriwether Lewis was appointed to be the Presidents secretary because of his “knowledge of the western country” and his ability to “aid in private concerns of the household.” (59). Living with Jefferson the two learn of the British explorer Alexander Mackenzie’s trip to the pacific by land across Canada. Later that year Jefferson would send an expedition of his own, Meriwether Lewis being the head of it. Lewis recruits a personal friend, William Clark, to be second on the team known as the Corps of Discovery. After making the necessary preparations and bringing on 30 additional men they were ready. The men set off in canoes up the Missouri river. The group is very low on supplies, Lewis and Clark use Sacagawea to negotiate trade between an Indian tribe led by her brother, for the supplies that they would need to continue. Additional help would come to them from the Nez Perce' tribe when the Corps of Discovery crossed the largest portion of the Rocky Mountains. When they reached the Pacific Ocean, looked south of the Columbia River to find a place to stay for the winter. There they built Fort Clatsop and waited out the winter. Traveling back, Lewis and Clark split the group into two, Lewis going on to explore the Marias River. The two teams reunited at the Missouri River and quickly made it back home. When the tour returns to America Lewis is appointed Governor of Louisiana and is given the task of putting together the journals and measurements from the trip so that could be published. However he fails to do either, instead he falls ill with depression and turns toward alcohol. Lewis’s death would come later in his hotel room, suffering from multiple gunshots. Undaunted Courage is a very detailed and descriptive story with both interesting and slow moving parts. The book portrays the point of view of Meriwether Lewis and his diary entries from early childhood to his expedition of the western United States. The book would be considered more of a resource to a research paper on the expedition of Lewis himself. Not many people would pick this book unless they enjoy the details of the western exploration or the personal thoughts of Meriwether Lewis before his departure and during the exploration. Undaunted courage can be considered “new” because the book is portrayed in the eyes of Meriwether Lewis.
It was on February 28, 1803 that President Thomas Jefferson won Congressional approval for the expedition of the Western lands that would become the adventures of Merriwether Lewis and William Clark.(1) A budget of $2,500 was allotted for the expedition of the group who were dubbed “The Corps of Discovery” by Jefferson. Jefferson was extremely interested in the western lands, so much so that his personal library at his home, Monticello, had more books on the subject than any other library in the world. (2) The group were to be led by Jefferson’s secretary, Merriwether Lewis, and Lewis’ friend William Clark.
“The Lewis and Clark Expedition paddled its way down the Ohio as it prepared the Expedition to be launched officially from Camp Wood, just outside St. Louis, in the summer of 1804” (2), and the Corps of Discovery’s official mission would commence near the outskirts of St. Louis in 1804 where they would move upstream of the Missouri River to a place called Fart Mandan that was used at a trading post where they would wait out the winter. The Corps were tested with several bumps in the road that would slow and threatened the journey like the insects they would encounter, heat they would have to endure and injuries that were unavoidable given the working conditions they were under. There was a man by the name of Charles Floyd, that Lewis and Clark liked the most out of the crew, died of what was labeled as his appendix bursting and was “the only person to die on the two and one-half year journey.” As they continued forward in their quest they eventually make it to a village inhabited by the Mandan Indians whom belonged to a large trade network in the West. This is where they recruited a Frenchman by the name of Toussaint Charbonneau, that they would use as a means of translation between their current
Lewis learned how to hunt, fish, and gather plants, while also learning all sorts of other survival skills. Even at an early age, Lewis was a boy with a reputation, for there were “many stories of Meriwether as a child, defending himself and his family from both wild animals and enemy Indians” which demonstrated his impressive survivability (3). Lewis has always been a man deeply connected to nature. He is a true outdoorsman, showcasing his bravery and toughness by facing the large wilderness alone. After returning to Virginia and completing his formal education, Lewis enlisted in the U.S. Army where “he served alongside another soldier with whom he would become well acquainted, William Clark.
The Lewis and Clark expedition is arguably the most courageous and adventurous exploration effort ever made in American history. The Lewis and Clark took place after the Louisiana Purchase as an effort to find a northwest passage, map the newly purchased land, make scientific discoveries in the area, and to establish contact with the natives and set up a strong trade network with them. Through efforts of Thomas Jefferson, Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, Sacagawea, and many others, the United states was radically changed through the exploration of these new uncharted areas. The Lewis and Clark exploration would not have been possible without Thomas Jefferson's monumental purchase of the Louisiana Territory. Due to the United States westward
Meriwether Lewis was born in Ivy, Virginia in 1774. William Clark was born in Caroline County, Virginia in 1770. In 1801, President Thomas Jefferson asked Lewis to act as his private secretary. President Jefferson offered Lewis another offer. This offer was to lead an expedition to the western part of Mississippi.
In the year 1807, Thomas Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on an expedition with a group of men. Specifically, the goal was to discover new waterways and routes near the Pacific ocean and to uncover new finds in the West. Along the way, the group of men was later joined by a woman named Sacagawea and her family. In general, the group ended up finding new Indian tribes, the Rockies, and over 300 new types of species. In the “ The Lewis and Clark Journey Begins”, from National Geographic, the article summarizes the dangerous and rough expedition Lewis and Clark took with a group of men in order to find new discoveries.
The Major challenges That The Corps of Discovery Faced The Lewis and Clark Expedition was a federally funded venture to explore the North American West. The expedition's principal objective was to survey the Missouri and Columbia rivers, locating routes that would connect the continental interior to the Pacific Ocean. The Louisiana Purchase of 1803, in which the United States gained 828,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River, facilitated the mission, allowing the explorers unprecedented access to land that had previously been owned by Spain and then France. President Thomas Jefferson invested his time, energy, and political capital into this project and took direct charge of its initial planning and organization. The expedition
The Lewis and Clark Expedition Jefferson and the nation now needed to know what lay in the land that they had just purchased. Americans knew that indigenous people lived in the territory but they knew little about them or the ecology and geography of the lands west of the Mississippi. Jefferson commissioned his personal assistant, former army captain Meriwether Lewis to lead the Corps of Discovery expedition of 50 men westward, Lewis chose his friend Lieutenant William Clark to

In Corps of Discover, 2016, “Although it was not successful, “Lewis and Clark achieved an impressive record of peaceful cooperation with the Indians and generated American interest in the fur trade” (Corps of Discover, 2016). On April 7, 1805 the Lewis and Clark exploration provided all gathered information from the trip and sent it to Missouri making the expedition results vitally important to the nations growth by providing information from the crews hard work (Corps of Discover, 2016). Thomas Jefferson, the president of the United States at the time, “sent a secret letter to Congress asking for $2,500 to fund an expedition to the Pacific Ocean (Thomas Jefferson and the Lewis and Clark Expedition). He chose Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to lead this expedition. Lewis and Clark were some of the greatest heroes in our country because of their experience, how they interacted with their team and with the natives, and how they gave citizens a new outlook on their country.
