Cooper Dalton Magicians, Athletes, & God Claudia McIsaac 3/22/23 Lex Orandi and Lex Credendi in the World of Harry Potter Lex orandi and lex credendi are Latin phrases that explain how our beliefs shape our actions, and conversely how our practices impact our beliefs and values. This is a shortened version of the phrase “legem credendi lex statuat supplicandi,” which directly translates to: the law of praying is to establish the law of believing. This idea was first put forth by Saint Prosper of Aquitaine and has survived the test of time since the fifth century. Lex orandi and lex credendi are essential aspects of Christianity, as well as other religions. In Christianity, both lex orandi and lex credendi are crucial as they guide believers …show more content…
These ‘laws’ are especially evident in the Harry Potter series, and there are numerous examples of this. The ‘good’ witches and wizards of this universe believe in magic as well as wielding it ethically, and therefore they practice magic and obey moral codes that are taught to them. Firstly, we can see obvious examples of lex orandi throughout the series. The first orandi we are introduced to is the magical means of traveling to Hogwarts, the school of magic. Accessing platform nine and three-quarters by running through a magical wall demonstrates the students' faith in magic and the school, and it is a practice that only the members of the Hogwarts community perform. Additionally, magical spells and rituals like incantations and potion-making also embody lex orandi. They serve as symbolic offerings used by wizards and witches to express their beliefs and cast spells. In addition, Quidditch is an important orandi for the students at Hogwarts. This game involves competing while flying on broomsticks, with orandis such as specific rules known only to those familiar with the sport, as well as types of magic that are used during the match. Furthermore, the Ministry of Magic, which governs the world of witches and wizards, also plays a role in both lex orandi and lex credendi in Harry Potter. This institution helps to preserve traditional magical customs, …show more content…
This continues a discussion of right and wrong, as well as bridging the gap between belief and actions. Throughout the entire series, Harry and Voldemort had several similarities. They are both intelligent and determined to reach their goals. In addition, they can both communicate with snakes and have the desire to become more powerful. However, the characters are enemies and are often looked at as opposites. Harry Potter lives a balanced life in accordance with his values and teachings, which allows him to surpass Voldemort in strength. Harry grows as a character through his hardships and perseverance and works hard to become the person he believes he needs to be. On the contrary, Voldemort’s beliefs are rooted solely in power and domination; he values strength over morality and seeks only to impose fear upon those who oppose him. This dichotomy between lex orandi and lex credendi creates a moral divide between the two characters, making it clear that Harry’s values are based on an ethical code while Voldemort’s are rooted in selfishness and
Society’s moral and ethical values are relentless towards criminals as society demands justice for crimes. However, Day provokes the audience to challenge these rigid ideals by presenting Harry Lavender as a product of his own unfortunate upbringing. Day introduces and develops the character of Harry Lavender through unique chapters in the novel which are extracts from his biography. It is through these extracts that the context of Harry’s past is revealed. Harry makes reference to how an upbringing of an individual shapes the person they become.
The laws are not set in stone anywhere, but are creations by humans based on our needs to make the world revolve with order. The world is always changing, and in order for laws to always be of appropriate effect, laws change as well. An example of how it is necessary for laws to change would be when there was no law about weapons being in school systems. However, when shootings on school grounds began, there was a need to implement a law. A downside of zero-tolerance policies with these laws can affect people who have no malicious intentions.
This introduction and description of characters shows the similarities in personality traits between Muggels and wizards. With this Rowing is commenting
If this law was not enforced, people would be committing misconduct and society would be dysfunctional. These laws also have moral and ethical meanings. For example, law 154 states, “If a man be guilty of incest with his daughter, he shall be driven from the place (exiled).” This law is protecting the children from
but also to enrich and improve the lives of practitioners while giving back to the planet. In the case of self enrichment versus ritual, “not every spell is a prayer, nor are invocations differently worded spells”(21). The most important attribute of practicing magic is that it remains positive. The book does not delve into the consequences of opposing practices, but states that the repercussions are “unimagined”. Magic which connotes negative energy is thought as the greatest of insults to the human race and the universe itself.
The controversy surrounding Black’s imprisonment and escape reveals the issues within the criminal justice system of the Wizarding World that is mirrored in reality as well. As Harry Potter and his peers continue through their third year at Hogwarts, several
Harry Potter was forced to endure many hardships of death and still needed to face the killer of his loved ones, who was known as the embodiment of evil. These three individuals had to endure many hardships to reach their goal.
Though not always be noticed, quotes are used in everyday lives as a guide to making the right decision. “Faith is the sister of Justice” is a Latin proverb used in Madeleine L’Engle’s “A Wrinkle in Time”. This quote is an essential part of both who and what people are as individuals and societies. In this essay, the symbols of justice, different meanings of faith and justice to individuals and societies, and how the quote has a meaning of faith and justice working together will be stated. To begin with, the symbols of justice are together as a statue of a combination of Themis (the Greek Goddess of Justice and Law) and Justitia (the Roman goddess of Justice).
An archetype is a model of an element in most literature. There are three archetypes, which are characters, situational and symbolic. In this essay, I am going to explore five different character archetypes in the Harry Potter series written by J.k Rowling. The character archetypes of hero, villain, mentor, companion, and trickster are present in the following Harry Potter series. An archetype of a hero offers personal audience journey to lead on the adventure that is in the story.

Faith and reason are the two wings that help the man to rise to the truth. Faith and Reason (Fides et Ratio) are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth. This expression leads Pope John Paul II 's encyclical "Fides et Ratio". After reading this encyclical, I was amazed in how Pope John Paul II, in so few many words is able to synthesize the core of his letter, the subject of truth, something essential in life and history of men. Thus, as Pope John Paul II sponsors the capacity of human reason to be aware of the truth and demand that faith and philosophy again find their profound unity.
