Live Like You Were Dying Poem Analysis
Tim McGraw is an American country singer and song writer. Many of his albums have been on top of music charts, making him the third best-selling country singer. The one song that really sticks out to me the most is “Live Like You Were Dying”. Tim wrote this song for his dad Tug McGraw who died of cancer earlier in the year. (Wikipedia, Tim-McGraw). As I have examined the rhetorical situation throughout the text, the author, and the audience, I have found a better understanding of the argument that Tim McGraw is trying to present.
“Live Like You Were Dying” tells the story of a man in his early forties who gets the horrible news that his father has a life threatening illness. His father’s message to live life to the fullest and do the things he had wanted to do like go skydiving, mountain climbing, fishing and bull riding. He also says it made him become a better husband and friend. A important message coming from those lyrics is to make the most of the time that you are given. The moral of this story put into a song is to become a better you, doing everything you’d ever dream of doing. You only live once, so do it right, think about life as a gift. The lyrics in this song describe a man who not only had to face death in the eyes, he made every effort to make a positive turn to it. The song is simply sending a message to the listeners to lead a better life, you never know when it’s going to end. A message to live like you’re dying. In conclusion, everything is uncertain. The most important thing is the fact that you lived every day to the absolute fullest. You can never truly know what will happen next. I believe you should live every day to the fullest because you never know when your last one
