Did you know that 90% of teens that were bullied online were reported being bullied offline as well? Bullying by definition is, “use of superior strength or influence to intimidate (someone), typically to force him or her to do what one wants.” Bullying has a huge factor in almost 90% of the teen population, 4,400 teens take their lives each year due to bullying. My cousin once told me she was bullied for being fat, she is 9 years old. Is this what we want our children to be like?
To start, 55% of teens are bullied for their looks, 37% body image, 16% race, (Pacar.org). Since gay marriage was legalized on June 26, 2015, 81.9% of teens are bullied for coming out as LGBT, (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender). Just for sexual orientation,

A study by Lancet psychiatry states that, “Teens being bullied by peers have suffered worse long-term effects.” These researchers have studied that adolescents are more likely to suffer from anxiety, depression, and consider self-harm or even suicide over the course of being bullied or later in life.” Furthermore, adolescents tend to other things to help with their depression and anxiety, whether it be drugs, or even becoming a bully themselves. Above all, bullying can cause effects on people, not just mentally but physically. 20% of teens have turned to alcohol or drugs to help with their depression, this is called self medication. Over the past few years 37 state laws have been adopted against bullying. The question is, are these laws being enforced well enough so people follow them? And the answer is no, which is why more severe punishment is needed. Some of these laws should require suspension of school days, or in worse cases expulsion. The victim should be required a sort of restraining order against the bully. The restraining order can possibly be made through the school system. Bullying occurs every day due to social pressures, cultural insensitivity, and learned behaviors during formative years, and therefore is a pervasive issue that affects both the bully and the bullied, causing self-esteem issues, mental health problems, delay of social skills, and should be addressed and prevented by parents. Bully is a very widespread problem and affect many individuals, especially students. One out of every five students report being bullied (Pacer's National Bullying Prevention Center, 2016). Victims must learn to stand up for themselves. Consequences need to be required when it comes to bullying.
The department of education is clear that no form of bullying should be tolerated. The anti bullying policy should be followed so that children and young people feel welcomed, secure and happy while in a place of learning. Anti bullying policies and procedures are in place to protect everyone, this ensures that there is a zero tolerance on bullying. As the children in my setting are under the age of 5 and haven't yet reached the stage of understanding what the term bullying is, we therefore have a behavior policy to prevent children from hurting or repeating unwanted types of behavior.

The law regarding schools’ ability to punish students for disrupting the learning environments in schools needs to be strengthened. Schools in this day and age have been facing a more and more frequent problem of having to deal with harassment and bullying online for while the internet does not increase the amount of bullying it does provide a medium to do so that our legal system is not fully prepared to handle. The internet gives students the ability to put out opinions that can very easily make it to a wide audience and indirectly impact the learning environment regardless if there are at school or not. Teachers have even become targets of their own students harassment and it is uncertain whether it is the school 's responsibility to deal with it or not.
Bullying is a phenomenon existing as long as humans exist. The fact that it didn’t have a name for years doesn’t mean that it wasn’t a widespread way of behavior, in cases where two different types of people were involved ; the strong and the weak ones. Bullying in Schools What seems fun and harmless for some students, is painful and degrading to others. Bullying has been a critical issue around schools, but before it was not as dangerous and know as it is now. These do not means bullying was not happening, it means it was not taken into consideration by parents or teachers. They thought it was just peer pressure or a kids game, and sooner or later the kids would be friends again. At one point, bullies think it’s normal to be mean and abusive to other students.

CRIME OR CHILDISH ACTION? Adolescence years which are the most important times of someone 's life are about self-awareness, searching for a new identity, formation of personality and not only physical but also mental changes and it can be affected by anything. Along with changing hormones and environment where student lives or is exposed to, there may be observed violent behaviors and/or bullying actions. Bullying can have different connotation for different people but as a dictionary definition, it means abuse and mistreatment of someone vulnerable by someone stronger, more powerful ( Marriam-Webstar Dictionary). Among the students, especially in the high schools, bullying is some kind of power-seeking and it is a common behavior.
Schools with effective approaches educate their students on bullying, and create strict guidelines to follow with serious consequences if not followed. Granada Hills Charter High School has a strong anti-bullying policy, where students are required to adhere to a series of rules which strictly enforce bullying. Should a bully be present, the school enforces strict “disciplinary action if the bullying action negatively affects the school environment, the victim’s attendance, the victim’s feelings about him- or herself, and/or the learning experience” (Granada Hills Charter High School). If a student were to experience these effects, then the bully would be held to specific consequences such as counseling, detention, a parent-student dean conference, referral to school police with possible arrest, suspension, or recommendation for expulsion. The University of North Carolina conducted a systematic review of different anti-bullying policies, and concluded that “anti-bullying policies might be effective at reducing bullying if their content is based on evidence and sound theory and if they are implemented with a high level of fidelity” (Hall).
Bullying is defined as repeated oppression, physical or psychological of a less powerful individual by a more powerful individual, people or group. It consists of three main types of abuse which are physical, verbal and emotional. Bullying in schools is a common and worldwide spread problem that can have critical and negative implications on the general school climate as well as on the right of students to study in a safe and secure environment without fear. Many people believe that bullying is part of life, happens in all schools and so it’s not an issue to worry about and that it lets individuals know what life is all about as it toughens them but in reality bullying is a detrimental problem that affects most school going children and teenagers physically, emotionally and socially.
