Corruption. The one word that correctly explains Lord Of The Flies by William Goulding. Throughout the novel, you can see the way that the boy's behavior changes. When they first land on the island they are very composed, but then it gets chaotic. They kill people and go “savage”. This is shown when the boys kill Simon. This quote from Lord Of The Flies shows this, “ The water rose farther and dressed Simon's coarse hair with brightness. The line of his cheek silvered and the turn of his shoulder became sculptured marble.” This illustrates how slowly, the boys are starting to become evil. The boys start good-natured and have fallen into the same patterns as each other. This behavior is a good example from the text when it states “ So is it a few bad apples that spoil a barrel? “That's what we want to believe — that we could never be a bad apple,” Zimbardo said. “We're the good ones in the barrel.” But people can be influenced, regardless of their intention to resist, he said.” (Dittman 17). This shows how the boys want to be good but, their situation is transforming them into performing negative actions. This can be shown in the article Madness In Humanity when the author states, “Young people adrift in a globalized world go to ISIS and other extreme movements seeking a shared identity that gives their lives a sense of meaning and purpose.” (Gleiser 8) This properly shows a more modern example of human nature because the people that are sent to these movements are only sent there because of their human nature. Their nature, good or bad, determines how well of a person they wish to be. Because of this, they may go on to live a life doing good or bad deeds. Those who believe the boys in Lord of the Flies are born full of malicious intent may see the crash as their calling to act as their true selves. They may also claim that “Some researchers speculate that this transition can cause stress that might promote bullying behavior, as students attempt to define their place in the new social structure. For example, changing from one school to another often leads to an increase in emotional and academic difficulties” (Espelage 5). They would apply this to their claim because it too demonstrates how an environmental change can bring to light the human desire for dominance. Since early times, there has been various way that people asserted their dominance over others.
