No. This my hand will rather/ the multitudinous seas incarnadine,/ making the green one red.”(2, 2, 78-81) Macbeth is talking to Lady Macbeth after killing Duncan when he says this quote. Basically, he is saying that even if he were to wash his hands in the ocean, they would not come clean. Instead, Duncan’s blood would flow from his hands and turn the entire sea from green to red. The image is extremely powerful, because the ocean takes up seventy percent of the Earth. It shows the spectator how huge of a deal the murder was, not only to Macbeth, but to entirety of the characters as well. Back then, kings were associated with being on level with God. There are few ways to improve the word choice in this quote, since the concept is easy to get across and the image itself is extremely powerful.

He is reciting an old says, that says the dead will have their revenge. In this case, Banquo will have revenge on Macbeth, his murder, by having his crimes discovered. Shakespeare is foreshadowing that Macbeth will be caught and killed. The quote also gives the reader apprehension of what will happen to Macbeth. It also presents the image of the dead, bloodied ghost of Banquo standing over Macbeth’s shoulder, waiting for his retribution.
