The percentage of slow and fast muscle fibers determines the difference between marathoners and sprinters. Long-distance runners have many slow fibers in their muscles. Slow fibers which long distance runner have, break down glucose aerobically to make ATP. Aerobic respiration involves taking in lots of oxygen. These cells that are in the muscle can provide endurance. Long-distance runners are usually smaller than sprinters compared to a more muscular runner. Long distance runners have more mitochondria because they need to store more energy for a longer period of time, unlike sprinters.
Sprinters have more fast muscle fibers, they make ATP anaerobically, without oxygen. They can contract quickly and supply energy for short bursts of intense
