Did you know that Martin Luther King Jr. was imprisoned nearly 30 times? Or that Martin Luther King Jr. entered college at the age of only 15?
Martin Luther King Jr was a Baptist minister and a social activist in the United States in the 1950s and 60s. He also arranged several peaceful protests, for equal opportunities for Black African Americans. Later on, with all his protests he managed equal rights for Black African Americans. He was also the target of several vicious attacks, which weren't just towards him, but also his property. He received threatening phone calls, and his home was bombed and set afire, during which he was also even stabbed. According to the website novaonline.nvcc.edu, “ King faced opposition from not only whites and their leaders but also from some of his own race.” This website also says “Martin also faced obstacles that the federal government initiated.” He was also put through several unwarranted investigations by the Federal Bureau of Investigations. Martin was also harassed by the head of the department, J. Edgar Hoover. Hoover felt that Martin caused too much “trouble” and called him “the most notorious liar in the country.” Hoover also thought that if there were negative exposure questioning Martin’s morality, perhaps his followers may not be as supportive as they used to be. Luckily, Hoover and his attempts to discredit Martin Luther King Jr. did not inhibit Martin’s effort toward securing equal rights for all. On August 28, 1963, at the March of Washington. Martin Luther King Jr gave a famous speech, called, “I Have a Dream.” This speech influenced the government to take more direct acts to fully realize racial equality. With this, he managed to achieve progress with the Civil Rights Act in 1964, which forbids discrimination of race, color, religion, gender, and national origin. He also managed to achieve the passing of the Voting Rights Act in 1965. According to the website naacp.org, “His adoption of nonviolent resistance to achieve equal rights for Black Americans earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.” He was and still is appreciated around the world to this day for using nonviolent protests to overcome injustice for African Americans. Later on, Martin Luther King Jr died on April 4, 1968, and in honor of him they made a holiday on January 15 to celebrate the impact he made in the world for African Americans and achieving equality for all.
