The Other Side, a children’s book written by Jacqueline Woodson about how a metaphorical fence divides blacks from whites. Clover, a little black girl who lives in a yellow house on the other side of a fence from a little white girl named Annie. The tone of the story is all people are made equal; We are trained to judge people by their skin tone. The symbolism is the fence; The audience was the children.

First, The Other Side’s tone is everyone is created equal. We are educated to only judge people the pigment of their skin or by their appearance. The fence symbolizes the division between blacks and whites, nevertheless Clover and Annie decide to break down the fence. “Someday somebody’s going to come along and knock this old fence down,” Annie said. Annie and Clover were not worried about the division of black and whites, they just wanted to become friends; Consequently, they broke down the fence of segregation. “Yeah,” I said. “Someday.”

Lastly, The other side’s audience is children; Particularly, children all over the world. In, The Other Side Annie and Clover are the core individuals; Their friends, and themselves, are all children. Jacqueline Woodson wrote this children’s book to show all children it does not matter what the shade of their coating is; Adolescents have a vote in who they choose to befriend, withstanding the pigment of their skin.

In summary, The Other Side is at children’s book about the division between blacks and whites; How two little girls of at different race changed that. The tone of the story is no matter what you look like or what the color of your skin may be, we are all made equal.
