The Mexican War between the U.S. and Mexico has expanded the borders of the U.S. and shrunk the country of Mexico. Till this day there is still debate if the U.S. was justified in going to war with Mexico. Now, There are many reasons why the U.S was not justified in going to war with a young and growing Mexico such as, Polk wanted to start a war, falsely advertising events that soon led up to the war, and how Mexico let Americans on their land to help the young country out. these claims are proved by new sources that have come to light instead of the stories the American history books teach kids in schools.
First of all, when Mexico declared independence from Spain the young country was barely starting to grow. The Northern parts of Mexico

and Mexico. Unfortunately, the history books miss the mark on details that made this happen, Polk had already stated that he wanted to take over Texas and California even if it meant by force in Document C. It would make sense if he would send troops crossing the border, towards the center of Mexico trying to cause action from the Mexican government. Document C explains this ¨(In early 1846, on Polk´s orders)¨ the troops commanded by General Zachary arrived at the Rio Grande, across from the City of Matamoros, thus occupying the territory in dispute and increasing the confrontation.¨ In Mexico´s shoes, sending an army close to the center of the young country was seen as a direct attack as stated in Document C ¨In the eyes of the (Mexican) government, the mobilization of the US army was an outright attack on Mexico.¨ That is why the U.S. is not Justified in going to war with …show more content…
Since the Army President James Polk sent to Mexico was attacked by the Mexican government he began to spread incorrect information that ¨Ämerican blood was shed on American soil,¨ When in reality no blood was shedded on American soil, therefore, this only made things worse for Mexico. Document B War message of President James Polk, Washington, May 11, 1846 “Mexico has passeed the boundary of the United States, has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon the American soil.¨ This war message James Polk sent to the Senate and House of Repesentaives is somewhat of a lie, falsely accusing Mexico of deeds that were staged and misleading is an act of Fraud, thus, proving that the U.S. was not justified in going to War with
After Polk learned about them refusing his offer, he sent his troops onto territory that Mexico and America had “claimed”. Mexico soon attacked the Americans for invading their territory. Which is where the quote “American blood had been shed on American soil”. Which the truthfulness of this claim varies. I think the truthfulness of the claim “American blood had been shed on American soil” is not really that truthful.
The Mexican War was a violent and devastating event between United States and Mexico that lasted from 1846-1848. President Polk had to lie to congress, to make United States declare war on Mexico. Lincoln considered President Polk provoked as a vote-fixing device and hoped the arguments against the war would cause his reputation in the United States House of Representative. Lincoln claims President Polk misrepresented the whole thing that the Presidents Polk evidence was not true by any means. Lincoln lays out evidence that president Polk gave is either incorrect or irrelevant reasons to gain support from congress.
James K. Polk, a president of the United States, believed that the U.S. had a “manifest destiny’ to spread across the continent towards the west. The president tried to buy places like California, Nevada, and Utah from Mexico. Mexico denied the offer from the United States which such decisions made the president mad. On April 25, 1846, Mexican cavalry attacked a group of U.S. soldiers, murdering about a dozen soldiers. Congress then declared war to Mexico on May 13 and Mexico never declared war to the United States.
As a Democrat, I believe that President Polk was justified in starting the Mexican-American War. Also, as a strong supporter of Manifest Destiny, also known as Western expansion, I furthermore find reason to believe Polk was justified in initiating war with the Mexican people; being that the Mexican government refused peaceful negotiation. The Americans were the just owners of this western land, and we intended to get it. The Mexican government refused a meeting with our representative to establish the border between Texas and Mexico, along with an offer of 30 million dollars for Western territory. These western territories would provide substantial economic growth for the United States, as well as the obvious: making our nation larger as
By establishing a treaty with Mexico without consulting the Mexican government, the United States made the situation worse. Hence, Mexico and the United States are both at fault for the Mexican-American war. First and foremost, after gaining independence from Mexico, Texas wanted annexation by the US. Texas wished to be a member of the United States, as stated by Polk in document B. Polk responded to this by setting restrictions to safeguard US residents living in Texas. Sixteen Americans were slain by the Mexican military who crossed the border.
However, this is an invalid argument. The land that Polk tried saying was invaded was actually land that was being disputed between Mexico and America. As, at the time they were having disagreements on where their borders were. Joshua Giddings wrote, “the army was within the United States they could not commit violence upon Mexico… It seems that the President expected General Taylor to find Mexican citizens located within the United States.”
The first reason why I think the US was unjustified was because Polk provoked Mexico. when Polk heard about the Mexicans inviting in American farmers to increase the population in texas, polk got the idea to kick out all Mexicans in the states and let The US grow. In early 1846, on polks orders, The troops were commanded by Zachary taylor to march to Rio grande, right across the city of Matamoros, in dispute and increasing possibilities of a confrontation. But In the Mexican government's eyes, the mobilization of The US army was an outright attack on Mexico so of course they reacted quick.
While describing that America was purposefully sending troops into the disputed war which greatly increased the chances of a war to begin, the author states,”In early 1846, on Polk's orders] the troops commanded by General Zachary Taylor arrived at the Rio Grande, across from the city of Matamoros, thus occupying the territory in dispute and increasing the possibilities of a confrontation.... ”This proves that the Mexican American war wasn’t justified because AMerica was sending troops to try and start conflict in the territory. This is important because AMerica was deliberately trying to start conflict by being in the disputed war. While describing that Mexico believed America was going to try and attack so they responded by protecting their land and country from the invaders, the author states,“In the eyes of the [Mexican] government, the mobilization of the US army was an outright attack on Mexico.... As a consequence, the Mexican government reaffirmed the instruction to protect the border, meaning the territory located between the Rio Grande and the Nueces River - an order which led to the battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma....
*One of the many reasons that the United States was justified to go to war with Mexico is that the Mexican soldiers shot 16 American soldiers. * This shooting was located at the North Bank of the Rio Del Norte River. [Document B, is a speech given by President James Polk, to try and convince congress to go to war with Mexico, and he gave his speech on May 11, 1846. ] In Document B, President
and Mexican forces had taken place in U.S. territory.” “Further, legislators were at odds over whether Polk had the right to unilaterally declare that a state of war
In Document B, President Polk said, “I had ordered and efficient military force to take a position...to meet a threatened invasion of Texas by the Mexican forces….invasion was threatened solely because Texas had determined….to annex herself to our Union,... it was plainly our duty to extend our protection over her citizens and soil.” President Polk then mentioned the attack at the Rio del Norte, where the invasion in Texas happened. This evidence shows the US was justified in going to war with Mexico because Texas was invaded by Mexico, meaning that the U.S. should protect Texas by fighting
Was the United States justified in going to war with Mexico? The United States was not justified in going to war with Mexico because they did not respect their laws, culture, and their beliefs. Second of all, this evidence shows that the US was not justified in going to war because it was useless to fight if the Mexicans were going to lose Texas if it was not now, it would be later on. Truly, it was very clear that the Americans won the war because Texas wanted to become part of the US, and the United States wanted to adopt Texas into their union.
As stated before, the US was justified in going to war with Mexico because of three reasons, Americans were killed, Texas was already annexed, and Manifest Destiny allows it. The United states had many superb reasons for going to war with Mexico. This essay is significant because it helps explain the United States’ choice to go to war with
When Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821, a string of ruthless dictators and weak presidents made Mexico an easy target for its powerful neighbor, the United States. The US swooped in to expand its territory and its popular institution of slavery. By doing so, the US started a war with Mexico that was justified for illegitimate reasons. The Mexican-American War was not justified because the US took Mexico’s land for the expansion of slavery, and justified their taking advantage of Mexico when it was politically weak by hiding behind Manifest Destiny.
Although the United States war against Mexico resulted in the gaining of America’s most valuable land, the war itself wasn’t legitimate because of the revolution in Texas, motivation for superiority, and the U.S. government’s actions. To begin, the Texans began an unreasonable war because they didn’t follow Mexico’s laws and conditions. When Mexico started selling cheap land, they set conditions for the people moving in. The people had to convert to Catholicism, learn Spanish, become a Mexican citizen, and have no slaves. Many Americans didn’t like being told what to do, and disobeyed the rules and laws.
