“Explain an Idea or Theme Found in This Novel.” Midnight Star by Marie is was an absolutely beautiful conclusion to her The Young Elites trilogy. In the end of this novel, Adelina, the main character ends up trades her own life for her sister’s, and to compensate for all the hurt she caused in her world. In the end, Violetta, Adelina’s sister makes a deal with Compasia, the angel of empathy to make Adelina into a constellation. I believe that the theme of this novel is that love is the greatest gift of all, because it changed cruel Adelina’s heart at the end, it brought Violetta back to life, and kindness was returned back to Adelina. When Adelina was confronted with her choice of returning to the mortal world without Violetta or trading her life for Violetta, she decided to choose the latter. Adelina was filled with love for her sister, and through that, was willing to give up her own life to bring Violetta back. Life is a gift of its own, but through Adelina’s love, Violetta was able to come back to life. And life is a gift that Adelina had chose to buy with her love and her own life. This can be applicable for real life. Though we cannot physically bring back the dead, love can compel a person to do things a person usually will not do. One example is when some people are willing to have their lives taken so others do not have to die. Good and brave fathers will fight off robbers, even if this means that his life would be taken, so that his children and wife may escape, because he loves them. Another example is when several teachers allowed themselves to be showered with bullets in the Florida shooting, thus saving many lives of students because they loved the students and wanted the students to have a better shot at life. These braveries can only be demonstrated because of love, and Adelina made a brave step to trade in her life for Violetta’s out of love. This is why love is the greatest gift if all, because it gave Violetta a new chance at life and live a better life than Adelina had lived, which can be applied to real
Rosenblatt wrote the article to convey that selflessness can be perhaps the best act of charity and power a person can give, and that it can really show a person’s true character. The man must’ve known that if he stayed in the water that he would perish, but he put the needs and lives of the other passengers before his, a true act of courage and kindness that the survivors surely remember each day they continue to live. The passenger showed the he had power over nature, even though in the end, he himself succumbed to nature. He showed that even the greatest acts of compassion can be given in the face of death. The overall theme of Roger Rosenblatt’s article, the overall inherent message, is that selflessness is perhaps the most valuable gift to be given, even when the cost itself may be
This book “Lockie Leonard, Human Torpedo” by Tim Winton discusses the issues that teenagers usually go through. The two main themes in the book are love and embarrassment. Looking at both themes the author makes Lockie Leonard represent the actual life of teenagers. The author represents teenagers by placing Lockie as a young adolescent who is experiencing things a normal teen would experience at his age.
This quote also proves that Serafina is selfless and willing to sacrifice herself for the children of the Biltmore and people hurt because Serafina is willing to hurt herself to save the lives of the people trapped in the cloak. In conclusion, due to how she sacrificed herself to help others and save people, Serafina is a selfless person and the people taken are important to
Grief V. Love: The Ultimate Emotional Brawl “Grief is like the ocean; it comes on waves ebbing and flowing. Sometimes the water is calm, and sometimes it is overwhelming. All we can do is learn to swim,” was once written by the author Vicki Harrison. In the short story Catch the Moon, by Judith Ortiz Cofer, the character Luis learns to “swim” with the assistance of the power of love. Cofer creates this story with the underlying message, grief has negative effects on people, however, love has the power to overcome the obstacles created by grief.
“Love led us on to one death” says Francesca (). She portrays herself as helpless and defenseless against the power of love. Furthermore, she says “love…swiftly kindled in the noble heart…still injures me” (). Her repeated usage of love shows that she believes that she did nothing wrong. Love is an implacable force and thus, it overpowered and seized her.
When things get difficult people get scared. They tend to give up and stop, letting fear control them. In the book Nightjohn, by Gary Paulsen, John is faced with many fears. Throughout the story, John is teaching a young slave girl named Sarny how to read and write. As slaves, learning to read and write is considered illegal, which makes learning dangerous.
Everything seemed so dark and yet the stars always shone even though engulfed in total darkness. Even though it is left in the dark, the star does not long to move and stays in place every night until the darkness comes again, as if saying “you do not bother me.” Somehow, even though millions of miles away, they filled me with hope. Maybe I could be like one of those
This is done through creating a tone and there, the importance is found. What possible tones could the author create by speaking of music in the night? Mystic, mysterious, serenity, peace? Possibly all of the above.
Family trust and secrets are two major themes in the book Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng. Readers are first presented with the fact that Lydia, the favorite child in a family of five, is dead, and they are taken on an crazy, complex journey to find out how and why. Through this journey they detect the growing tension between family members, and how their desire to keep secrets from each other ultimately lead to family discord. Personally, I believe that family members do not need to, but rather are encouraged, to share their feelings with one another.
When Juliet and Romeo were faced with a conflict, they would act based upon their emotions rather than coming up with rational solutions that would benefit both parties. They were only thinking in the moment, and not of the future consequences. Unfortunately, their rash decisions led to tragic incidents and the deaths of friends, family, and themselves. The problematic impulsiveness from the main characters could be taken as a moral, that love can control one’s mind to behave recklessly, leading to troubling
In the twenty-first century, society sympathizes with Juliet, because no one could imagine marrying someone they did not choose. However, in the fifteenth century, people were confused why Juliet would want to marry a family enemy, especially when she had a suitable bachelor waiting for her hand, but she was searching for love. A decision that is well ahead of her time, because today people are also searching for companionship and love, similar to what she found in
Each and every day, people make sacrifices for their loved ones. Maybe they choose to get up earlier in order to do chores or miss an important meeting so that they would have time for each other. There is no greater example of sacrifices for loved ones than in Romeo and Juliet however, where Shakespeare explores two star-crossed lovers, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, who come from two families that have a deep hatred towards each other. The pair meet each other, secretly wed, and then in order to stay together, commit suicide out of despair and distress. Through Romeo and Juliet’s acts of defiance and sacrifice, Shakespeare proves that while hate has the power to destroy and kill, love is even more powerful as it has the power to transform.
Love in fact acts as the most dangerous power, a force not to reckon with. I’ve learned from experience, intervening with mortal’s love affairs will only spark trouble, maybe even an entire war. In return for awarding me the Golden apple of discord, I promised Paris the most beautiful woman in the world. Helen, whose beauty took the prize,
Love can cause illusions and false realities that enhance the idea of perfection that does not really exist. Juliet’s idea of Romeo being a man of wax is questioned when Juliet learns that Romeo killed her cousin, Tybalt. She is conflicted as to whether she should hate Romeo or not for killing someone in her family. She exclaims, “Oh, that deceit should dwell/ In such a gorgeous palace!”
In life, people want to have that someone they can call the “sun to the their moon,” or the “night to their day,” wishing for an undying love. William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet deals with the recurring visual motif of light and dark, that is used to represent and foreshadow their love. Both of the lovers compare one another to the day and night, which highlights the intensity of their relationship, but also expresses the downfalls and unforeseen complications to come. For Romeo, Juliet is his sun. His light.
