Momma wants the children to look over the rules and to give respect to the elders. The only one who do disrespect her are the poor white children. it hurts Maya to hear the kids not give the respect to her Momma and Willie by calling them by their first names. One time, when Maya was 10, 3 white kids approached the store. Momma send her inside. The chilchdren make fun of Momma by mocking the way she stands and the movements, Maya cries with rage. In the meantime, Momma says nothing and just hums gospel hymns. One of the older white girls does a handstand, and her dress falls over her head revealing that she had no underwear on. Maya is outraged, but when momma goes into the store Maya notices that Momma was in some way fought and won the battle
