In the movie October Sky, a young boy named Homer Hickam lived in a little town called Coalwood in West Virginia. He had the determination: to build and shoot off his own rockets by “Sputnik” that was orbiting around the sky. Homer’s dad, John, wasn 't so thrilled with his idea of building these rockets and said it was a waste time to try building his own rocket. He wanted Homer to follow in his footsteps and work in the mines. With the help of his friends and teachers, Homer continued to pursue his dream. Although the Hickman family may differ from my family because of the era we live in today, there are still many similarities.
To begin with, Mrs. Hickman is a hard working stay-at-home mom who loves the inspiration of art, and dreams about

Hickam, my mom is hard working, artistic and supportive. For example, my mom is always at all of my games, encouraging me to always try harder and do my best. My mom also helps me with getting things I need and keeping me updated with things that are going on with family. In addition to that, she makes sure my Dad is aware of what is going on with my game schedules, and makes sure he attends some of my games.
My father shares some of the characteristics of Homer’s father John Hickam. John is a busy man who lives his life in the mines to provide care and support to his family every day and night, sun up and sundown. Observing his employees’ safety and production. John is so overly obsessed with his job that he never finds the time to do other things with his family such as going to see Homer fly his rockets.
This relates closely to my Dad, because he’s always being occupied with work and making sure the place is being run properly and everyone is doing their job correctly. This gives him little time to participate in many of things going on such as soccer games and after-school activities. Homer 's Dad and my dad are also similar because my Dad wants his kids to grow up as respected hardworking citizens that work as hard as he
Throughout the book, Homer has an unstable relationship with his father, who chooses to praise Jim for being successful and talented. Homer, on the other hand, is a child with no future
Jim, Homer’s brother, has been their father’s pride and joy, while Homer is closer to his mother. Homer Sr. constantly brags about Jim’s abilities while never saying anything about Homer, at one point Elsie, Homer’s mother, ask him to brag about
The 1943 novel The Human Comedy alludes to The Odyssey in ways which are both big and obvious, and small and subtle, with each kind having it’s own perks. One does not have to read far into The Human Comedy to see the references and allusions It makes to The Odyssey. Things like Character names and settings make the transition to The Human Comedy with ease and readability. However, not all points in which The Human Comedy alludes to The Odyssey are so shallow. Things like the story’s obstacles and underlying theme for example, are more well hidden and require critical thinking to find, instead of just basic observational skills.
“That’s my girl! Dad said with a hug, then barked orders at us all to speed things up” (17). They show their kids what they believe to be a good life, and they don’t let their children think anything negative about it because that if their
October Sky is a true story based on the life of Homer “Sonny” Hickam Jr. It describes how he is inspired to build rockets when he sees Sputnik, at age 14. Throughout the book, Sonny has to overcome many obstacles to achieve his dream of sending rockets into space. The reason he was able to overcome these obstacles was due to his determination to work, willingness to learn, and his faith in his friends. Because of these three things, Sonny and the other Rocket Boys were able to go to college, escape Coalwood, and get jobs in which they could pursue their dreams.
The Essential Homer translated and edited by Stanley Lombardo, depicts the story of the famous Trojan war. Helen even though not being a central character in the story her role throughout the epic is important. She is created as a suffering figure who is constantly striving for independence and a sense of belongingness among the many different restraints that she faces. Even with the limited amounts of appearances in the epic each encounter with her character the reader is able to learn more about her personality and the way her character evolves in obtaining autonomy and being part of the society she feels excluded from. Helen is time after time blamed as the women for who the famous Trojan war was fought for.
In The Odyssey, Homer emphasizes the significance that similarities between fathers and sons can have: “Never, anywhere, have I seen so great a likeness in man or woman-but it is truly strange! This boy must be the son of Odysseus, Telémachus, the child he left at home that year the Akhaian host made war on Troy” (Homer 57). This talks about the similarity between Odysseus and Telémachus. Offspring often model their parents in looks and character traits. Although Odysseus goes through extremely dangerous and taxing situations, he is often thinking of his family.
In her book “Unequal Childhoods: Class, Race, and Family Life,” Lareau depicts a family where the eldest son’s schedule “determines where the adults must be and when they must be there, sets the timing and types of meals for everyone… and even shapes the family vacation plans” (42). In the specific story, the parents have jobs with flexible hours, so they are able to give the child the ability to participate in all of the activities that interest him. While it seems like a wonderful thing to be able to allow children to explore everything they are interested in, it can be difficult for the children to learn that their parents’ lives are also a top priority. If a child is taught to believe that their schedule is the most important part of their family life, they may struggle with someone else’s activities taking priority. Also, if the parents have more than one child then they must deal with giving equal priority to everyone, which is difficult, if not impossible.
In a family there are many different roles; there's the role of the mother, the father, the child, the grandparents, then there’s the brothers and sisters. Every single one of those roles has different responsibilities. The father, according to most of society, is supposed to be the breadwinner for the family. However, nowadays the mother is actually quite capable of being the breadwinner just as much of as the father. As they work to show their children what it is to be an adult they are teaching them as well on how to be an active member of society.
Disconnect Between Children and Parents in Relation to Education In reference to the Simpson episode, there is a father and daughter disconnect, between Lisa and Homer, respectively. This strain in their relationship can be accredited to her father’s lack of higher education and appreciation towards educational activities. This is demonstrated when Homer admits this minimal academic achievements and is reluctant to visit the museum alongside his daughter. Evidently, he and Lisa have different interests, which have developed through each one’s academic experience.
She was a selfless human being who sacrificed her life for all her children. She had a fighting spirit that is unmatched. As a wife, she was very submissive to her husband as Christ requires it, no matter the consequences. Mom was the epitome of humility, kindness, love, compassion, gentleness and had a great sense of humour and an infectious smile. She was very jovial and extremely multi talented.
There have been many people in my life who have impacted it both negatively and positively, but no one has had an impact in my life greater than my mom. This woman is just amazing in my eyes, right from the beginning because of the way she raised me, if I had children I would raise them the same way she raised me. The person she is, in general, has really had a great effect in my life, and also how she has always told me about the struggles shes had in her life from the ones I didn't see to the ones I have seen with my own eyes. I believe if I didn't know my mother as well as I do, she wouldn't have influenced me as much as she does. The way my mom raised me has made me the person I am today, so if I were to say she didn't impact my life I would be lying.
In the movie October Sky based on the autobiography written by Homer Hickam, Homer is fascinated after seeing Sputnik 1 in the sky. Although his father doesn’t approve, he still wants to follow his dreams and pursue rocket science. However, he faces multiple disappointments along the way. In the movie, Homer and his friends shoot off rockets and they invite his dad to come; he never does.
She loves taking care of me and siblings. My mom and I have a lot of stories to share. One was in six grade when I was in a bad place with a friend. I told my mom everything that happened. She said in a sweet and lovely way, ¨If she doesn 't want to be your friend she is the one losing because you are a very nice, kind, sweet, and lovely friend that´s going to give her good advice.
She always does anything she can to ensure that I and everyone else in my family and her own friends are a safe and comfortable. She has also effected the way I have changed from the time I was a child to now. If she was not the person I know her to be then I guarentee that I would not be the same person I am today. When I was a child I did not care about the consistencies of things and now I understand that everything I do and change will end as something different.
