My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a Hollywood-style romantic comedy, about Toula Portokalos a 30-year-old single woman in Chicago, A Greek descendant, being raised in a highly traditional family. I am going to compare the American culture to that of the Portokalos family. The movie starts at her family’s restaurant, Dancing Zorba’s, where she is incessantly reminded that her clock is ticking. In conformity with her family’s standard, women that are not married and popping out babies, work in the family restaurant, and are seen as disappointments. Toula comes from a traditional Greek upbringing in where all women are expected to marry from their own ethnic background namely Greeks. According to Toula “There are three things that every Greek woman must do in life: marry Greek boys, make Greek babies, and feed …show more content…
He says his last name, “Portokalos, means orange (like the fruit) in Greek. And the root of the word Miller is Greek, and means apple in Greek.” He says “In the end, we’re all fruit.” My Big Fat Greek wedding shows views of the world of traditional Greek culture, the food, the loudness, and the strong family values. The movie portrays the need to overcome differences while not diminishing the beauty of tradition. Ian’s shows acculturation since he allowed the priest to baptize him and bring him into the church and thus allowing for Ian and Toula to be married. Therefore it can be concluded that Ian’s decision to be baptized is a great show of love for Toula, he will also see how it is to be in a Greek Orthodox family and may participate in traditions or actions of his wife’s family. In general the movie was okay, I don’t really enjoy comedy movies that much, but this movie does a decent job of showing cultural differences between Greek and American. However as a comedy many of the details are exaggerated for sensationalism, but the themes are real-life issues that many cultures
The characters begin to genuinely listen to one another and make the most of the unpleasant situation they are put in. The students put aside their differences and end up becoming true friends. The movie achieved a great amount of lasting success because of the amazing and talented John
Americans reacted to the secession crisis In 1850 Augusta County in Virginia were staunchly loyal to the Union, shifted loyalty late in the secession crisis of 1860 and 1861. Comparing local reactions to national politics with local views on the nature and unity of political communities more generally moves the decision to secede in April 1861. Cochran talks about the growing anxiety and uncertainty surrounding South Carolina's threat of secession and evaluates the South's readiness for a war and state of his financials as well as the health of his family (Augusta County: John H. Cochran to His Mother, December 11, 1860). He also enclosed letters detailing the state of the soldiers condition to the senate.
Most people do not enjoy talking about sensitive topics because they feel uncomfortable, so it is amazing how someone would write a play discussing one of the most sensitive topics, which is racism. I would think, many people would stay away from watching a play that could cause them to feel awkward. However, I was surprised to find out that this play is very popular, and this play was even created into a movie. My favorite scene of Spinning Into Butter was ending because the characters were openly honest, and the only way to end racism is to talk about the issue. Furthermore, this play is relevant in everyone's life, so it easily makes a connection with the audience.
Mrs. Schumacher Film Appreciation Final Paper Footloose When watching both Footloose movies the 1984 and the 2011 version, there are quite a few noticeable differences. I would like to start out by saying that the biggest one is the character choice. In my opinion Kevin Bacon didn't play a very good Ren McCormick. I believe that Kenny Wormald plays a better Ren. In my opinion the more modern version of the movie is a lot more up beat.
In the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, the role of arranged marriages are delved into with the story of Zeus willing his daughter, Persephone, to marry his brother Hades. This myth brings up a variety of issues revolving around the societal views of women in ancient Greece. Zeus’s ownership of his daughter, Persephone, definitely reflects upon the role women held when it came to their own marriage decision, or lack thereof. The Homeric Hymn to Demeter can be read as a charter myth since the details of the myth directly reflect upon the ancient Greek practice of arranged marriages. While the Homeric Hymn to Demeter was published, arranged marriages were very prevalent in society.
In the movie “Friday” it displays a typical day in the ghetto and what obstacles two young black men had to go through just to get through one day. Ice Cube a famous American rapper from LA’s popular 90’s hip hop group NWA wrote this historic black comedic/drama film and along plays the main character Craig Jones. Craig plays the neighborhood hero after a chaotic day where he deals with bullies, his love life, annoying neighbors, and scary drug dealers. The film is based in south central LA in the mid 90’s where Craig and his best friend Smokey who is played by comedian/actor Chris Tucker find themselves in trouble after thinking it would be a typical Friday in the ghetto. Craig a young black man in his early twenties lives at home with his parents is determined to leave the ghetto but there 's just some things holding him back.
Crazy, Stupid, Love “Crazy, Stupid, Love” is a heartfelt romantic comedy, released in 2011, starring great actors such as Steve Carrel, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. This is the best movie I have ever seen in my whole life. I still remember the first time I watched it, I loved it so much that I wanted to watch it a second time. It is a winning combination of wit and charm. I know this movie so well that I learned all the lines by heart and I must say I even use some of them in real life.
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is the first live play I have ever attended. I did not know what to anticipate, especially after hearing numerous accidents occurred during rehearsals. I was a bit skeptical about it. However when the play began, the on-point accents, the rowdy fight scenes, and their fluent moves all caught my attention. The facial expressions the actors and actresses exhibited on their glowing faces made the show enjoyable.
Humor comes in many shapes in sizes, appealing to different ages, genders, time periods, and even different intellect levels. In the 2011 blockbuster hit “Bridesmaids”, there are comical devices used that attract a crowd through low comedy. This implements comedy through vulgar language and jokes, indecency, and exaggeration. Although, this sort of humor may appeal to millions according to the outstanding ratings and exceptional critiques, this does not excite the same reaction to myself as it may to others. “Full of heart, warmth and enough excrement to fill an all-white bridal shop.”
This movie did a great job of showing how certain society’s work, races such as African Americans, Hispanics, and Persians/Asians were being treated wrong in the movie, and it displays the sociological concepts.
I enjoyed the comical and lighthearted dancing and singing approach the characters had to the somber situations around them. Watching this few years later and after taking a Text and Meaning course, I was struck at the sheer amount of things that stood out. The Negroes were declared “other”. In post colonialist theory, declaring one race “other” marginalizes them and stresses on how
Part A: I chose to watch the movie His Girl Friday. I found the concept of the movie to be quite entertaining and felt that it would be interesting to watch. I found the characters to be intriguing. The storyline also seemed very interesting; I wanted to learn more about it.
They decided to marry but faced to the disapproval of Toula’s family about the cultural differences. Firstly, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” illustrates the conflict between members of two different cultural groups in terms of communication style: low context culture and high context culture. In theory, a low context culture tends to “uses language primarily to express thoughts, feelings, and ideas as clearly and logically as possible... The meaning of a statement is in the words spoken”; in contrast, a high context culture “relies heavily on subtle, often nonverbal cues to convey meaning, save face, and maintaining social harmony.
This film not only gives us knowledge in cultures but provides us with relaxed moments. People should bear in mind that cultural difference is just the matter of variety, not the matter of which one is
