Every person has an interest or a talent which separates them from the rest of society allowing them to become an individual. It wasn’t until I decided to audition for the North Carolina Elementary Honors Chorus in 2009 that I discovered my talents lie within the realm of music. Becoming an active musician has not only helped me grow as a person by allowing me to build and strengthen social and cognitive skills, but has also helped me to appreciate each component of music, and has also taught me how to become a supportive and attentive member of the audience. That fateful day in the fall of 2009 when I heard that I was one out of one hundred and six students to make it into the North Carolina Elementary Honors Chorus was the day I realized that I had a passion for choir and for music. After that I continued to stay in choir in middle school, and eventually made it into Middle School Honors Chorus in 2013. As I began to grow into a young adult, I continued to grow as a musician by participating in my high school’s two advanced choirs which consisted of Bella Voce, a women’s choir, and Chamber Ensemble, the mixed choir. During these years I was invited to governor’s school, participated in …show more content…
Through music itself, musicians are able to develop mathematical skills, deeper understanding of texts, critical thinking skills which allow the musician to think about multiple musical techniques in order to achieve style and quality. “I’m surprised you didn’t write about band,” Mrs. Miller stated when she heard my concerns. Thus, I decided to write about my first year of marching band. “Music was a coping method,” I wrote in my first draft, because I was worried about revealing more. However, when Mrs. Stokes
My choral experience inspired me to want to become a music educator, whether it be choral conducting, theory, applied studies, or something else music related. I wish to recreate the experience I was lucky enough to have. I want my classroom to be a place where young adults can let go of their home issues and be able to heal through song and support from their fellow musicians. I hope my students can take the lessons they learn in the classroom and apply them to all areas of their life as they continue to build their character and find themselves, just as I did. After taking this Chicano studies class, I am now able to look back on my experiences and understand why my choral participation and directors had such a major impact on my life.
Since, music is considerable as the useful tool and it makes things seems easier for people just by listening to it while concentrating or working on things. In addition to a sense of community, “singing holds a strong social function, and choral singers experience social approval, belonging, and acceptance” (Parker). Social acceptance is essential to developing a social identity because not being accepted may lead to a person changing how they act around other people. Choir provides that sense of acceptance due to being surrounded by people who have similar interests. On the other hand, choral singing also attracts a diverse group of people from many different backgrounds. The large amount of different views allows for a teenager to gain different perspectives and thoughts which will contribute to her social identity and how she acts around other people.
After discovering music therapy, I fell in love with the idea of working with children on a one on one basis. I believe my gentle nature has lead me to want to work on a one on one basis, instead of a full classroom. One of my biggest inspirations, for following my dream to become a music therapist was my high school chorus director, Linda Tieman. She brought me to Ohio University, and helped me to further explore music therapy. Mrs. Tieman introduced me to an Ohio University alumni, Jessica Lucas, who graduated with a music therapy degree.

At a young age, I constantly wanted to express myself through music. I always found a way to incorporate music into my daily life, whether it be by blasting my favorite music, creating my own funky songs, or even having the opportunity to participate in my elementary school choir. My love for music actually took flight after I had decided to join my elementary school choir, however, in my opinion, it is not the most transformative moment in my life. After elementary
Students who study music outperform their non-music peers in assessments of math, and the advantage that music provides increases over time. These findings hold true regardless of socio-economic status and race/ethnicity (Baker, 2011). Additionally, It is believed that music education enhances student motivation. This is explained by their sense of accomplishment by learning musical instruments, which allows them to build confidence to perform better within group activities (Caterall, 2012).
