The Infrastructure of North Carolina Roads
North Carolina is one of the fastest growing states in the United States. More than 12.5 million additional people are expected to call North Carolina home by 2040. That is an increase of 32% expected between 2010 and 2040. North Carolina maintains 80,000 miles of roads. With most of the money designated for roads tied into sales tax and the gas tax, the recession over the past few years has crippled our ability to repair and construct roads. We will need to improve the funding system of our roads, which will increase travel and productivity.

In return this can pose a significant challenge to transportation officials, legislators, and engineers to provide safe roadways to citizens regarding an aging infrastructure (Infrastructure Report Card, 2013). Bridges and culverts are a crucial component of the highway system as they cross roadways, streams, and major waterways to keep the motorists and commerce moving (Infrastructure Report Card, 2014). The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s main task is to maintain the majority of these highways. Currently there are 13,558 state maintained bridges, including 5,462 bridges that are structurally deficient and/or functionally obsolete (Infrastructure Report Card, 2014). While NCDOT currently funds a $200 million bridge improvement program, a significant investment in bridge repair and replacements will be required as bridges and major highways reach the end of their service life (Infrastructure Report Card, 2013). North Carolina’s bridge needs will require an increase in funding not only for new highway bridges, but simply to maintain the aging system (Infrastructure Report Card, …show more content…
All of these sources combined make up approximately twenty-three percent, forty percent, twenty percent, and seventeen percent, respectively. The Highway Fund provides resources to maintain the statewide roadway network, cover administrative expenses, and support multi-modal programs. The Highway Trust Fund is a resource used for the design and construction of legislatively designated primary U.S. and NC routes and loop highways. Federal funds are received from national administrations and grants to be used for various projects. The funding from the North Carolina Turnpike Authority is utilized from usage fess and toll revenues to create major highway projects that could take place in the future. According to the North Carolina Statewide Transportation Plan, NCDOT created an investment and policy priorities North Carolina’s transportation system. As a long-range planning process, the blueprint draws technical analysis, partner and stakeholder collaboration, and public involvement to identify and prioritize NCDOT’s investments over the next thirty to forty years. These long-term are to maximize economic opportunity, improve modal systems, maintain transparency, promote long-term viability for the residents of North
The many pitfalls of potholes has left a burden on traffic and on the body of many cars in Chelsea. Fortunately the solution is simply to hire a contractor or state road workers to repair the potholes. The hurdle in this situation is how to get the money to pay for the repairs. This is where the city comes together and gets involved in raising the standards of Chelsea roads. Getting local residents and local businesses to pull together and plan a family night out dinner where food, supplies, and time are donated and dinner is served to all attendants in exchange for a small charge.
Due to erosion, there has been a lot of residential impact made on the Outer Banks. For example, the highways keep eroding away and getting rebuilt over and over and storms are not helping, because during storms it starts to flood and wash the roads away (Rising Seas: Will the Outer Banks Survive?). As the erosion increases it shrinks the island, creating less space for a highway to be there or to be built (Rebuilding N.C. 12 Threatens Outer Banks ' Existence). Over time NCDT has been trying to rebuild the Bonner Bridge for 23 years now but with the storms and erosion it has been delayed. Residents of Hatteras even said “that as children people built their structures as far away from the beach as possible” however with the rising sea levels and erosion has caused them to get closer and closer to the ocean.
Where are the roads that you give the government money to build?” (Project, Long Legacy). When Long was elected governor, winning by the largest margin in state history, he fulfilled his promises for the schools, roads, and hospitals that rural Louisiana fiercely
As mayor I will make the city a better place, and I will listen to the people. Being the mayor would be very exciting. And I think that Council Bluffs has the opportunity to be a very fun and exciting place. As Mayor I would fix the mall, make new roads, and bring new attractions to the city. The first thing I would do as Mayor is fix the mall.
Brick streets have been around for at least a century. Many people are not aware of the history that lies under the asphalt streets they tread on. Brick roads are seen less because asphalt is more common due to convenience. Drivers generally do not know the benefits of brick roads. For this reason, I propose that more brick roads be recovered and maintained rather than being covered by asphalt.
Financing required to repair and replace infrastructure sums up to millions of dollars, and not having readily available funds will delay or suspend capital improvement projects under construction The city of South Gate’s capital improvement program budget totals $80 million, of which 58% are funds for street improvements. The cost for South Gate’s City Project 364-ST is approximately $5.5 million, including construction costs and indirect costs such as design, project administration, and a right of way acquisition. The project is funded by Metro’s Measure R half-cent sales
Feasibility and Sustainability of the California High Speed Rail Project’s Economic and Environmental Policies ABSTRACT California high-speed rail is being planned, designed, built and also operated by the California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) to connect mega-regions of San Francisco and Los Angeles and contribute to economic development and a cleaner environment along with preserving the agricultural and other protected lands in the state. The phase 1 work is well under way completing the selection of an alignment, ridership estimation and documenting the policies. The feasibility study of the future rail system for potential high speed being built with billions of dollars is very useful in identifying the strengths and weaknesses
The Transportation Revolution and the Market Revolution Before the 1800’s, the transportation of goods and people across the nation was slow, difficult, and overall desperately needed improvement. During the years 1800 to 1860, the Transportation Revolution took place. The Transportation Revolution opened travel and settlement to fuel economic growth; This encouraged invention and innovation into the settlers of the coast which brought them to the heartland. This revolution allowed for new and improved forms of transportation to emerge; Roads, steamboats, canals, and railroads were the main four forms of revolutionary transportation.
However, businesses that make their fortunes using government-sponsored rail lines seem to be disinterested in paying for the lines they use. Perhaps the best way to cut down on accidents on rail lines is to treat them as a private utility. Local governments and businesses could come together to decide whether it’s worth spending corporate money to have a rail line or not, and average taxpayers could stop funding an outdated mode of transportation. At this point, investment in rail is just a bad investment.
In the efforts to do so, the government invested heavily in projects such as superhighway, bridges, canals and public building and, after 1935, in
Roads are one of the most important part of asset in many countries because transport surly contribute to economic growth and development and bring significant social benefit. On the other hand, bad roads can cause accidents and get less associating with human and aggrieve isolation. (Burningham,2005). If road become well, the distance between people will be shorter. This can help to improve access to hospitals, schools, and markets which help economic growth..
Inadequate infrastructure impedes the development of the country’s economy, which would culminate in poor economic performance. This would affect the government’s budget as there would be lesser resources to implement social safety nets that would be sustainable in the long run. Hence, infrastructure is essential as it directly impacts the economy of the developing countries, which would determine the ability of the country to provide social safety nets that are actually adequate and
The bridge also had to meet the expectations of local state and federal agencies. Throughout the planning of this construction giant. A series of environmental studies were necessary. Thousands of federal, state, and local environmental permits, licenses, and approvals were required for the project.
An introduction to highway building: Although there are many methods to constructing a road, all are based on the principle that geographical objects are removed and replaced with harder and more wear-resistant materials. The pre-existing rock and earth is removed by digging or explosions. Tunnels, embankments and bridge are then added when necessary. The material that the road is being constructed from is then laid by various pieces of equipment, which will be looked at in greater detail in this assignment. The construction management of roads has become increasingly more difficult as larger structures are constantly being required in increasingly short amounts of time.
