In Nothing But the Truth there is one thing that stood out to me throughout the entire book. The whole book is full of lies. Philip Malloy tells lies about everything and to everyone. He lies to his parents, the principal, and even to a reporter that is interviewing him. Throughout the book we continue to see the lies play out until the very end of the book when Philip finally decides to tell the truth. At the beginning of the book we find out that Philip is a great athlete and the star of the track team. However, when his grade in English stops him from being on the team, Philip starts making up lies to cover it up instead of just telling the truth. While having a conversation with his father he tells him that he doesn’t want to try out for the track team. He says, “I, ah…was thinking I wouldn’t try out” (Nothing 29). His dad gets visibly upset about the situation and Philip responds and says, “Just because you did it doesn’t mean I have to” (Nothing 29). Although Philip tried to make it about his dad forcing him to run, that really wasn’t the case at all. He wasn’t on the track team because …show more content…
In order to make the situation sound better Philip tells his parents that no one likes Miss Narwin. Philip’s dad asks him to explain why he thinks that Miss Narwin has it out for him. He responds, “I don’t know. Nobody likes her. People don’t do well in her classes. Except her favorites” (Nothing 28). However, this was a lie. In fact, many children in the book stand up for Miss Narwin. Allison, the girl that Philip has a crush on says to Philip, “I just want you to know that I think what you did was really mean. Narwin is one of the bet teachers. All the kids say so. It’s really embarrassing” (Nothing 148). Philip knows that when he tells his parents that no one likes Miss Narwin that he is lying. In fact, he even says, “Things stink. And it’s all so unfair. Nobody takes my side. They all think Narwin’s great” (Nothing
A Necessary Evil: A History of American Distrust of Government is a novel surrounding government myths. This novel is written by Garry Wills. From militias to sovereign states, many things that we as a society believe about our history is what he proves wrong, in this book. He brings light to the myths we all believe revealing what truthfully had happened. Garry Wills not only attacks myths that we have made but also different views we have.
A toolbox filled with many different tools that have many different purposes can be used to put broken things back together, or take whole things apart. This all depends on the person with the tools and their intentions. One could also substitute the toolbox for the act of lying and all of the tools inside of the box for the different types of lies that there are. In the essay written by Stephanie Ericsson, “The Ways We Lie” she examines and explains from her personal experience the different types of lies that there are. One might say that lying is immoral, and a terrible thing to do, but this just depends on how you lie and what your intentions are with the lies that you tell.
“Whenever you’re in a conflict with someone, there is one factor that can make the difference between damaging your relationship and deepening it. That factor is attitude”-William James. A positive attitude has the ability to fix any conflicts that may arise between two people. Gabriella and Liam from the short story “Bluffing” by Gail Helgason and Ann and John from “The Painted Door” by Sinclair Ross both face conflicts; however, Ann and John have a better attitude creating a healthier relationship based on faith, consideration and understanding. “Faith: complete trust or confidence in someone or something”.
After becoming blind, and landing on a small island with unfamiliar sounds and places, Philip tries to search the island. He began to crawl along the beach in search of Timothy, but runs into a clump of low hanging brush(Taylor 60). After this, he becomes angry with Timothy fro leaving him alone, but he becomes more familiar with the island later on. Philip was becoming familiar with the island, even though he was blind. Timothy made him a cane, and Philip used it to get around the island, falling many times, but getting closer to being able to become less dependent on Timothy(Taylor 79).
Although Nick Carraway of The Great Gatsby and Holden Caulfield of The Catcher in the Rye are the narrators of their respective stories, the author reveals that both are unreliable through their sharing of background, hypocrisy, and biases. Neither Nick and Holden are entirely open about their backgrounds, which prevents the reader from immediately totally trusting them. On pg.3, Nick explains that he attended college and participated in the war, yet despite this and all of the other details he provides, he fails to gain the reader’s trust as these details are general and impersonal to him when considering that multitudes of others in the same social class did the same in the early 1920s. Personal details that allow the reader to understand
The novel No Country For Old Men, is written by the author Cormac McCarthy. The novel is about a man named Moss who finds money in a desert. Moss is chased by multiple different drug cartel groups as well as a very skilled assassin named Chigurh. McCarthy takes the reader on a long journey into his story on the run. Towards the end Moss is assassinated by Chigurh.
The third theme for Nothing But The Truth is immaturity because in the book Philip talks bad about Miss. Narwin and says how everybody hates her (in reality everyone likes Miss. Narwin).Mainly Philip’s immaturity led him into lying about Miss. Narwin.
When it comes to knowing and learning the religions of the world one must approach them with a critical mind. One cannot simply just believe every religion and know have their own view points. David Van Biema presents his ideas about Christianity and Jesus in “The Gospel Truth?”. Van Biema’s main point is about how “Matthew, Mark, Luke and John… is notoriously unreliable,” . Van Biema writes about how one cannot be completely sure about whether to believe if Jesus actually said what is written in the bible, he continues to say that Jesus may even be an “imaginative theological construct” .
She loved the Harling children as her own. She served Jim’s grandparents as if she was their bondservant. Whatever she did, she did wholeheartedly, tending the seeds of love and hope she had planted. And this did not fail her, for at long last she harvested the love, admiration, and respect of everyone around

so I just sat beside him holding the cloth…” Phillip seemed to be prepared for this, unlike how he would he would have been at the beginning. Lastly, Phillip demonstrated maturity after experiencing blindness as evidence in the novel when he had returned home and saw how others acted. Based on the reading, readers can tell how Phillip felt once he returned home. (Taylor 136). “I saw Henrik Van Boven occasionally, but it wasn’t the same as when we’d played the Dutch or the British.
The Vietnam War was a very controversial war and therefore had one of the biggest impacts on society. The Vietnam War had many causes and affected soldiers, citizens, history, and literature. The Vietnam War was fought for several reasons. The first reason being Vietnam declared its independence from France.
Although some people believe Father Flynn is innocent, I have reason to believe that Father Flynn is guilty. In the parable Doubt, Flynn is the priest and a gym teacher who is accused of abusing boys in the Nicholas school. The Principle thinks Flynn has abused Donald Muller, the only black boy in the school, and possibly William London. I believe he is guilty because of his interactions with the boys, how defensive Flynn acts when he is accused, and then explain a counterclaim of his guiltiness. One reason I believe he is guilty is the way he interacts with William London and Donald Muller.
In Deborah Tannen's essay, "Sex, Lies, and Conversation" she elightens her readers on an age old question, about communication between sexes. I personally have had several experiences with this exact subject, some of them merely reiterating the author's point, and others seemingly disproving her entire theory. For example, with my ex-boyfriend having any sort of conversation was so unbelievably difficult that it was hard to believe we were from the same species, much less speaking the same language. However, in my current relationship with my fiancee we talk easily due to having so much in common, which makes both of us want to communicate with each other, even in difficult circumstances. Which is why I feel that a great deal of communication
Because of his lie, almost everyone went against Miss. Narwin (even though they never heard her side of the story), Allison and Todd creating a petition to get Philip to tell the people the truth (thanks to Coach Jamison) forcing Philip to transfer to an academy and having no choice but to shamefully admit that he doesn’t know the words to the national anthem. The theme for Nothing But The Truth is immaturity, manipulation of the facts, take responsibility for your actions, never lie, and of course truth. The reasons for those five themes is that 1) Philip attitude towards Miss. Narwin is immature 2)
