The main players in the War is not women, however, women still played an important role that deserves significant attention. In the novel “The Wars” by Timothy Findley, Findley explores the role of women that played a prime role alongside with Robert Ross. The two most significant women in this novel is Robert’s mother, Mrs.Ross and Marian Turner, Robert’s nurse.
Marian Turner is a nurse in the War, her role is greatly emphasized when Robert is doubtlessly burned severely. She nursed Robert, she is Robert’s life line. Turner’s role greatly increased after she knows the story behind the Robert. Nurse Turner’s judgement on these cases saddens her and she sympathizes Robert. Nurses could physically help bandage the soldiers from their wounds. Mothers could encourage more enlistment, which in turn becomes their sons, husbands, fathers, best buddy. Throughout history, World War 1 was bloody and chaotic. Massive amounts of people died. Men fight to end the War, women bandage the men so they can fight in the War. Although men played a physical role in combat, women’s role were also significantly important as well because if men were cars, women would be their fuel. With the support from men and women, the War would run more smoothly. Smoothly, not necessarily winning, but without the help of women, every single person would die, including the women. Working together means that the soldier strives to fight for his life and not give up, while the nurse hopes she could save as many life as possible and make a difference. The Great War was a long and dangerous journey in which there was a lot of death and sadness. Many people contributed in different ways, whether they fought, nursed, volunteered or took over the jobs of those who had gone to fight. Since all the men went to fight in the war, they needed women to start taking over their jobs. Women started working in factories and jutting out of domestic roles. One of the many women who had significantly contributed towards the Great War included a nurse named Laura Adelaide Gamble, who will be further explored throughout this report.
When the war broke out Barton was determined to help wounded soldiers despite the attitudes of men held towards working women. In Barton’s assessment, women forced their way into the war effort. “They saw, in high purpose, a duty to do. And the armor of right broke the barriers through.
Despite the men’s horrible position they had been put in, they still felt love, and that love served as a sort of anchor to their homes. Even feeling love for a woman who might not have felt the same, such as the protagonist or Henry Dobbins, provided immense comfort for the soldiers. Aside from providing morale, women also had incredibly important roles outside of the battlefield, such as taking on the roles their husbands previously had and still doing their domestic tasks. Women are viewed as fragile and delicate, but strong enough to keep a house clean, kids in line and a happy husband. Women are expected to be stay at home moms and depend on their husbands for everything while having no opinions of their own. However, there are women who have overlooked those expectations and proved that women are capable of doing anything. Deborah Sampson and Elizabeth Van Lew are just two women who have helped break the norms of women’s roles in society. Sampson’s impressive braveness and loyalty to fight for her country against all odds have proved that women are capable to endure harsh horrors.
There are many possible ways to analyze The Wars by Timothy Findley. For the purposes of this essay the critical approaches of psychoanalytical and archetypical have been used. Within these two critical approaches there are two main thesis's that apply to this text. The actions and inactions of the characters affect the outcome of the story, and Robert's gun is a symbol of his masculinity. Throughout this essay five sections of the novel are analyzed in order to prove these thesis's.
With men being pulled from jobs to fight in the war, it was necessary for women to take over traditionally male dominated jobs. Many women enjoyed this time of working outside of the home, and when the wars were done, had a difficult time returning to their previous lives. Nursing remained a profession in the inter and post war years that was still acceptable for respectable women to work in. This became a source of a movement that was seeing more women work outside of the home than in previous generations. While a lot of women saw this as an intermediary step until they were married, many more saw it as a valuable asset to be had.
Although the Australian Army Nursing Service was a viable occupation for women prior to WWII, few women were engaged in this service, as women needed a sufficient education and there was a strong push from the government for women to stay out of the workforce (State Library of Victoria, 2015). These sentiments underwent dramatic change during the war, with an increasing number of women contributing to the war and enjoying it. Sister Jane Tivey, a nurse on board the ship ‘Destroyer’ in WWII described this liberation, “On the Destroyer it was the most marvellous feeling… [even though] I hadn’t had a bath for five days and slept in my clothing” (Australian War Memorial, 2015). This was a common attitude for women of all ages as corroborated by sixteen year old Grace Wallace, a volunteer for the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF) in WWII. Wallace denoted that times were tough, work was hard but the girls got on quite well together (Green Net, 2015).
By reasearching, we learn how each war along with every women are the reason for the great successes, advancements, and victories that we as descendents, are left with today. The contribution and dedication is incredibly impressive. Not knowing if your life was going to end or not was just one of the many struggles that people had to go through daily. Luce repeats the words, “we’re going to”, following it with “things” to be done, such as to “take, and manage, with more and more rationing”, “have colder homes, different foods, less clothing”, and “accept the challenges imposed by these conditions”. By listing the circumstances that must be endured, Luce recognizes the tasks women must overgo through, leading to a much bigger picture. Therefore, Luce underlines that by supporting and aiding in the war, “the women of the next few crucial years are going to see that their children…are kept healthy and warm and well fed and well schooled and as happy as possible”. By utilizing children, the woman’s most precious treasures, Luce’s repeated “things” to be done creates a greater meaning amongst women as ensures the safety of their children and inspires the women to persistently push forward regardless of the tough
Robert Ross’s journey throughout the novel leaves him unable to recognize his reflection, expecting to see the image of a god, he sees the image of a scarecrow. Findley writes, “He’d thought he would stand and see himself like a god in the glass—and there he was: a scarecrow” (Findley169). Findley portrays Robert’s moment of blindness as a connection to the changes he undergoes throughout the novel. Robert at this point in unable to recognize himself as the young boy he started off as or the hero he wanted to become. Instead, the war strips his character and left him feeling as if he has no connection to who he used to be, truthfully, he isn’t and in this scene Robert understands this.
On brisk September mornings, civilian residences often answer the door to a military officer whom bears bad news about their sons. During the reconstruction, the sex ratio is off balance and many women do not have a full grasp on why they are lonely. In “War is Kind” by the famous poet Stephen Crane; he adopts sarcastic diction and syntax to display war as a destructive force. Stephen uses ironic diction to present war as a calamitous machine that of which yields for no one.
