History Report My job shadow is a certified nursing assistant (CNA). Nurse aide jobs were first established during World War I due to the surplus of injured soldiers. Since there was a lack of trained nurses, there was a desperate need for volunteered assistance to treat soldiers. The Red Cross began the program called Volunteer Nurses’ Aide Service which increased the amount of assistance for nurses to help hurt soldiers. The program was implemented again during World War II. This time about 12,000 people volunteered as nursing assistants. At first, nursing assistants did not have formal training or certification. In 1987, the Omnibus Reconciliation Act (OBRA) was passed by Ronald Reagan to certify the standards for nurse assistant training, requirements, and education. It was pushed mainly for the lack of care for patients in nursing homes across America. Congress wanted to make sure that high standards of care were given to patients. It mainly originated from America and possibly other European countries who also needed nursing assistance during World War I and II. Due to the substantial amount of casualties from the 20th century wars, nursing aides were heavily depended on. This catalyzed the step for CNAs to be a part of the hospital and aide nurses with patients. Afterwards, nursing assistants flourished across the world. CNAs have become an integral part of the hospital community and environment. For example, currently, there is a global organization named National Network of Career Nursing Assistants that is a non-profit group that provides support, research, and education for career nurse assistants.
