A social movement is a response by a group of people who are seeking change in any aspects. People change and mold the environment that they live in and social movements are a method of doing that. An example of a social movement is the occupy wall street movement. This movement began in September of 2011 in Manhattan and has been successful in that it has spread to many cities in America and international cities. The movement is • intended to fight against the dominance of of major banks and multinational corporations, as well as fighting against Wall Street for helping the corporations get powerful. • Fighting for economic equality and democracy. • Attempting to fight the disparity between the 1% and the 99%. The success of the movement
People partaking in sit ins were told to take abuse, and were arrested. This movement was used to show that violence was coming from the white community and helped achieve the goals of the civil rights movement towards racial equality. A more recent example of civil disobedience is the woman's march occurring January 21st 2017.
Social Movements, which is similar to the 21st century Policing Task force, because they are both strategies toward the same topic of policing unlawful doings toward the community. Social movement is more so a strategy usually individuals within the community would approach this group action, to raise attention to a problem or situation. The Progressive movement was a social and political movement that began in the late 1800s and lasted through the early 1900s. Before the Progressive Era, the Industrial Revolution had occurred, creating many new problems for the average person. Because of industrialization, people had started to leave their rural farmlands and move to the newly industrialized cities in hope of finding jobs. Because of lax regulations on growing businesses, monopolies were created the took advantage of their employees. Theodore Roosevelt was one of the leaders of the Progressive movement, focusing on dismantling these monopolies.
“A movement is an act that is meant to change something. So, the Abolitionist Movement was about groups of black and white people who worked to stop slavery.
There are many more stories from the movement, all of which are important to share. These stories serve as a reminder of how far we have come, and how far we still have left to
At the dawn the Progressive Movement, many objectives were set. One objective was to get rid of Big Business. For too long business had been involves in the government, and the progressives

The Suffragette movement gave women the right to vote. More recently, the gay rights movement persuaded the Supreme court to legalize gay marriage in all fifty states. Today, the Black Lives Matter campaign is sweeping across America, although its effects are not entirely clear yet. All of these movements were started because someone looked at their world, and was dissatisfied with what they saw. If they had been quiet, and let the injustices they observed go on, the country would not have been shaped and changed as it has been.
According to www.loc.gov, “Transformed into a mass movement to eliminate all traces of institutionalized racism from American life.” It help end racial segregation all the way and get rid of
As I walked down the hall of the fifth floor of Townsend Harris High School, the eyes of distraught, stressed, and frightened students stared back at me. However, sitting with their backs pressed against the lockers, every one of them had a face of resolve, a will to rid our prestigious school of the new interim acting principal, Mrs. Rosemary Jahoda. I was looking at and experiencing one of the most revolutionary movements that our school has ever undertaken. It was a peaceful, sit-down protest that had the goal of improving our school community, for the sake of the students and faculty alike. This, and many other current examples of civil disobedience, are campaigns that work towards changing the current circumstances that the party is experiencing.
The movement of black workers was a class movement, an elimination of exploitation in the plants, and an elimination of racism. During the time period, there were a number of rebellions, with protests regarding the Vietnam War, strikes, and civil actions. The revolutionary union movements focused on the workers, the power of the people, and the power of the producer. In many ways, the revolutionary union movements were at the forefront of rank and file movements, since the black militant organizations were instruments for upheaval. They were leading the movement as the most oppressed group, against capitalist, racist, oppressive labor systems in the auto industry.
One of the main goals of this movement, and any movement, is to spread awareness and get more attention. They want the American people to be aware of how corrupt our political system is and how Bernie Sanders aims to make it more fair and balanced, as he is leading by example by not accepting super pacs and only relying on small donations by individuals or civil
Occupy Wall Street has prided itself as being a leaderless movement, one initiated and led by the masses. This rhetoric sounds poetic and ideal, but no social organization or movement can succeed without a structural hierarchy. Occupy Wall Street’s own website states that “Occupy Wall Street is a leaderless resistance movement”, and when a movement “[doesn’t] have a centralized leadership structure and clear lines of authority, they have real difficulty reaching consensus and setting goals.” That rings true with Occupy Wall Street. Occupy Wall Street has not had caused any systemic, meaningful change, due to its lack of structure.
The Progressive Movement fought against all forms of injustice. It came to be to fight against corrupt politics, political machines, “robber barons” and big business, poor working conditions in the more industrialized America, poor living conditions for the poor and middle class in the more urbanized society, etc. Women’s Suffrage, child labor reform, social reform i.e. discrimination, banking and labor reform, and the desire for prohibition helped promote and influence this movement as well. Their goals were aligned with said causes. The movement’s eyes were set on the destruction of political machines, the breaking apart of big business and the power of the “robber baron”, the curbing and end of social injustice (in some forms), the end of child abuse and child labor, illiteracy, alcoholism, and crime, the improvement of the overall health, welfare, and safety of the country’s people, and the conservation and protection of natural
Another crucial point that Black Lives Matter movement requires is collaboration and partnership. The movement must reach out to other organizations across the nation to support and stand for Black people. Effective protesters need to have a variety of ways for families, youth and communities to be involved. They need to create partnership with local churches, schools, agencies and organizations and draw on the strength of the community wide collaboration. Social movement is multifaceted; there are different ways to be involved and different levels of involvement.
