A dream can be defined as a strong desired goal or purpose that a person has. Many people have a dream that they want to accomplish in life, but never get the chance to do it. People are either too busy with work, a family, or they do not have the money to start their dream. Today people see others accomplish their dreams all the time on TV shows like The Voice, Master Chef, and American Idol. The novel Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck shows that during the Great Depression dreams were desired, but very hard to attain. Of Mice of Men is an allegory about the Great Depression which follows two men, Lennie and George, who have a dream of owning their own farm with rabbits. Women during the Great Depression were seen as weak and were treated unfairly men were the only ones who even had a slight chance of attaining the American Dream. For women achieving the American Dream was very difficult, they had to give up everything so that their husbands could achieve their dream (Loranger). Like in Of Mice and Men Curley’s wife had to give up her dream of becoming an actress because she was too young and a women, “If I’d went, I wouldn’t be livin’ like this, you bet” (Steinbeck 88). Curley’s wife is saying that she would have lived a much happier life is she went with her dream of becoming an actress. Since she was a women her dream was unattainable and if she wanted to get an opportunity to become an actress again she would have to work very hard to do so. Dreams are hard to attain without discrimination, but with discrimination it is even harder to do, for this reason women had a hard time of achieving their dream, “While some women surely found some satisfaction in their domestic roles and knew their work to be both hard and necessary, many were aware that domestic labor was not only undervalued by their fellow Americans but also would never lead to success and stature”(Loranger). This quote proves that with discrimination against gender it was hard to attain the American Dream because even while doing work …show more content…
During the time of the Great Depression people did not know about mental disabilities and that is why Lennie was not treated fairly. Lennie got into a lot of trouble at work, which caused for him and George to find different jobs all the time. An example of when Lennie and George had to leave a job because of Lennie’s actions was when they were in Weed and Lennie touched the girl’s dress and would not let go. The only reason why Lennie did that was because he saw something he liked and he did not want to let go and he became scared when she started to scream. People during this time period were unaware of mental disabilities which made it hard for them to get jobs. Lennie and George’s dream was to own their own farm but it was hard to attain because of money issues and Lennie's disability, “But he gets in trouble alla time because he’s so Goddamn dumb” (Steinbeck 41). George was the only one who knew about Lennie’s disability and he kept it a secret because if people knew, they would have never gotten a job. People with mental and physical disabilities were discriminated during the Great Depression because they were different, which made it hard to attain dreams. There were many protests that happened during the Great Depression involving people with disabilities, people would go to relief offices and demand for jobs, but the
In 1933, 12,000 black men, women, and children were killed during The Great Depression. In the novel “ Mice and Men “ by John Steinbeck there are two main characters, George and Lennie. Lennie is mentally ill and George tells people he got kicked in the head by a horse when he was baby. George told Lennie he wanted a little house and animals on it.
When George and Lennie first arrived at the ranch they didn't mention anything about Lennie’s disabilities because they were afraid they might not be able to work on the ranch. Society conducted them to lie in order to work, which is a lot different from today. Most jobs will allow anyone to work or there are jobs that are meant for people with disabilities. Another example is later on in the book Lennie breaks Curley’s wife’s neck and proceeds to run away, but, instead of everyone thinking about his disabilities they automatically want to shoot Lennie for something he accidentally did. Lennie never realized or remembered how strong he was until it was too late.
Lennie's disability is shown in chapter 3 “Make ‘um let me alone, George” (Steinbeck 63) This shows that Lennie is affected because of his disability. Like society the girl doesn't care about Lennie's disability. This event shapes George and Lennie's relationship because after this occurs George knows that someday this disability will come back to bite Lennie
Of Mice and Men Essay Have you ever wondered what it was like to live in the 1920’s-1930’s during the Great Depression and rebuilding of America? Lennie Smalls and George Milton got the chance to experience that event straight on in the story “Of Mice and Men”. John Steinbeck, the author, includes many types of themes in his book, but I believe his story is trying to portray how the setting was a very difficult time in America with all the problems that sprung up. Problems in America ranged from the late 1920’s- late 1930’s itself, the Great Depression, and the newly upstarted “American Dream”. This time period was one of the toughest periods America has ever experienced.
The workers were making very little money and there were very few jobs. George has to take care of his job because there is not much to choose from. During that time, workers usually did not travel together like George and Lennie did and they could find jobs easier. The Great Depression was a very difficult time in which people were required to earn their survival by doing whatever they could to stay alive. Carrying Lennie around made it very difficult for George.
The idea of Lennie and George was derived from the experiences Steinbeck had with the migrant workers he toiled with on the orchards. He experienced that people had to do whatever they could to survive during the Great Depression. The Dust Bowl that swept many countries during the Great Depression destroyed countless farms. Lennie and George split from their families, something very common of migrant workers. People who traveled not only gave up their families, but they also gave up their roots and
Steinbeck uses the character George to illustrate the struggle of the American Dream, he suggests that when you work hard and are determined, it is very hard to achieve. George tells Lennie his romanticized notion of the American Dream, which involves owning their own land and not having to work for anybody else when they both begin working at the ranch. "We'll have a big vegetable patch and a rabbit hutch and chickens. And when it rains in the winter, we'll just say the hell with goin' to work" (13). George's dream symbolizes the core of the American Dream.
Women’s rights and the way they live has changed greatly over the course of time. Back in the day, women did not have equal rights to men and they had to face many challenges in order to receive the jobs they wanted. Nowadays, women can get the same jobs as men and their power is much more appreciated. The 1930’s affected women in a positive way over time as they tried to work their way up in government positions, obtain more profitable jobs, and help provide for their families; but they still had a long ways to go getting equal rights to men.
During those times, anybody with even a slight hint of a weakness was a victim to prejudice. Candy, Crooks; Curley’s wife. That fact that you were old, disabled, black or even just a woman was your ‘weakness’. It started a long path of hate, lies, deceit and sadness. But in some points in the novella, Steinbeck twists aspects of the Great Depression, and morphs them into similar yet impactful versions of his own.
