She was selected as Miss Black Nashville and Miss Tennessee her first year of college, and even earned a trip to the White house because of her academic accomplishments. While these awards and acknowledgements sound great, they were not the most exciting things to happen to her at Tennessee State. Her work in college put her on the map when she was offered a job by the Nashville CBS. She took the job and began co-anchoring the news outlet during her second year of college. After graduating college, Winfrey moved to Maryland and shortly thereafter was offered a job as a cohost for a local talk show. She stayed with the show for seven years, but eventually a Chicago affiliate of ABC saw Oprah and offered her a job hosting a talk show in Chicago. In January of 1984, Oprah began hosting A.M. Chicago, a show which was previously at the bottom of the rankings, and within only a few months, Oprah’s ratings were better than that of some nationally broadcasted talk shows.
