Within The Crucible, it is evident that people are coerced to lie. This involves both kids and adults, and they mainly do this because of Abigail. During the trials, if you were accused nothing could save you. If you denied it, you would be hung. If you admitted it, you would be hung. If you didn’t say anything, you would be hung. After some research, I have found that it is common for people to admit to crimes they haven’t committed. In the play, it is evident that the members of the community are very religious. These people may feel compelled to confess their sins, even if it is something they haven’t committed. Although some people told the truth, meaning they said they didn’t do anything, others confessed under the pressure, …show more content…
She did take place in witchcraft with the girls, but she didn’t really have a choice. Tituba was a slave, and she wasn’t supposed to say no to them. Tituba wasn’t as smart as some of the other people, and didn’t realize what she was doing was wrong. When the girls were confronted about it, they immediately turned on Tituba. Of course, Tituba was denying everything, but eventually gave in and said she was wanting to do it, resulting in jail time. There were other townspeople that were accused of witchcraft. Obviously, they weren’t doing anything because we know it was Abigail and her friends. During the trials, some people confessed and others didn’t. If you confessed or denied, your land would be given to the government to be sold again. If you remained silent, your land would remain in the family. Giles was accused of witchcraft, and although he didn’t do anything he didn’t say it. He knew if he denied it, nothing would be left for his family. In this case, five teenage boys confessed to killing a jogger in New York. After hours of unrecorded interrogation, all five confessed. During the interrogation, they were lied to, threatened, yelled at, and promised immunity if they confessed. Four of the five agreed to confess on camera, but the other one didn’t. The kids remained in jail for years, but later on the actual killer came forward and said he acted alone. Not only do the defendants have to say “I did it”, they also have to explain how. Most false confessions happen because the interrogator coerces the defendant to confess, whether they did it or not. During the case, the boys were between the ages of 14-16, which makes it easier to coerce them to confession. Some believe the confessions shouldn’t be used because of errors. For example, they would say they used a rock to cause a head wound, then the rock would turn to a brick, but it actually wasn’t caused by either of these. Errors in the confession should have showed that what they are saying isn’t entirely
Abigail was the one that started all of this because she was accused of witchery but instead of accepting the fact, she ends up accusing other people of witchcraft. She blackmailed the girls to not say a word or they will die. She wanted all of them to pretend to be summoned by the demon so they can accuse other people of witchery. In the book on page 19, “Let either of you breathe a word, or edge of a word. About the other things, and i will come to you in the black of some terrible nights and i will bring a pointy reckoning that will shatter you”.
“When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it-- always.” This quote by Mahatma Gandhi reveals the theme of this amazing story, love prevails. In Act III of the Crucible many of the characters feel compelled through desperation to lie because they feel like that is the only way to get the people they care about out of trouble. Since this whole thing started from a lie, whether it was a lie to God about adultery or a lie to get out of trouble when doing witchcraft. All the problems seem to be coming from Abigail. Mary warren had to lie because Abigail threatened her in Act I, Abigail said if you tell anyone what we were really doing ill hurt you. So Mary lied about it how she isn’t hurting Abigail through the bird at first and whenever she realized if she didn’t do anything then she was going to be killed.

People lie for many reasons. Sometimes it’s to themselves, sometimes it’s to others. No matter who they are lying to, it always affects others around you. In the story The Crucible by Arthur Miller, lying is a very common theme. Many characters lie, which include John Proctor, Abigail Williams, Reverend Parris, and many others.
Within The Crucible, many characters discuss public matters in private spaces and private matters in public ones. These occurrences demonstrate society’s natural tendency to exploit the less relevant, private affairs of citizens in order to influence public opinion and remove blame from oneself. Before the play itself begins, Miller emphasizes the common act of “express[ing] publicly ... guilt and sins under the cover of accusation” (7). Whether the guilt is deserved or not, discussing private matters in the form of public knowledge allows one to place the burden of one’s on actions on others around them. Reverend Parris first utilizes this form of accusation as he states that he “discovered” many girls “dancing in the forest” at night (38), using his sight of them as evidence of hooliganry.
This disgusting behavior seen today is also seen in The Crucible by Arthur Miller. The Crucible is the story of a young Puritan woman in 1692 Massachusetts who made false witchcraft accusations in an attempt to save her life and to end a rival’s life. While her actions are horrific and the cause of numerous deaths, the actions of the adults around her that enabled her lies to cost lives are despicable. Through his dishonest characters, specifically Reverend Parris, Judge Danforth, and John Proctor, Miller exposes the evils of lying to save one’s name and the destruction that inevitably ensues.
Therefore, people should not have to prove their innocence. In the play there have been many situation that concluded with no solutions that lead the character to betray their own belief.
