Legalizing recreational use of marijuana in California will have a negative impact on residents. Marijuana is a drug; and a drug, by definition can change the way the body works (Encyclopedia Britanica, 2016). Marijuana users experience a high that change the way they perceive things while under the influence. For example, if someone is high on marijuana, he or she will distort his or her perception and can cause a car accident. There are a lot of car accidents happening because someone is under the influence of alcohol, and these incidents will increase because this drug will be
The Costs of Criminalization Over the last 18 years, 23 state governments have legalized marijuana, taxonomically known as cannabis sativa, for medicinal use. Voters in these states have declared that the federal government has scheduled marijuana inaccurately, in that cannabis has many medical uses. Medical professionals in these states prescribe marijuana as a treatment for ailments ranging from insomnia and muscle pain, to post traumatic stress and epilepsy. But recently, we have seen a shift in marijuana reformation movements throughout the country.
Everyday patients are visiting their doctors in a desperate search for help with their problems, some physical and some psychological. Far too often in today’s troubled society a doctor is quick to hand their patient a prescription for a powerful and potentially harmful substance. The prescriptions could include drugs such as benzodiazepines for psychological problems and epilepsy, or opioids for pain. Both of those substances can have substantially dangerous and adverse effects and could lead to addiction and even death. Marijuana is a much safer and more naturally occurring substance that can be used for all of the previously listed purposes.
Every 37 seconds, someone is busted for possession of small amounts of marijuana. Started by President Richard Nixon, the War on Drugs prohibits the possession of narcotics that are considered “poisons” by the government of the United States. The Controlled Substances Act of 1970 does not allow any possession of the drugs listed in the act, which includes marijuana. People deserve the right to possess marijuana because crimes related to the drug will decrease overall and those that sell the drug illegally will no longer be able to stay in business. To begin with, legalizing the use of marijuana leads to a decrease in crime related towards possession, purchase, and use of the drug.
Back in the early twentieth century, marijuana was mainly used for medical purposes in the US. Now, both it 's recreational and medical use is increasingly being consumed by the population and the tendency is to continue increasing. Much has been said about the use of marijuana as a solution to different health problems, and although not everything that is said is true, it cannot be ignored that marijuana can help in the treatment of some cases of adult patients. CNN’s chief medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, was opposed to the medicinal use of cannabis. Based on his knowledge as a neurologist, he was convinced that the drug was dangerous and had dismissed its supposed therapeutic benefits.
With the pressure to legalize marijuana rise for government officials, protesters argue that decriminalizing marijuana would help society and benefit the people living in the Unites States. In states that have already legalized marijuana, it has been documented and proven that marijuana usage has been higher than before legalization, even if the consequences were very severe (“Marijuana Decriminalization”). If people are so highly dedicated to continuingcontinue using marijuana, even with their lives and future at stake, what could stop them? Marijuana has been proven to be a “gateway” drug, therefore, if marijuana were to be legalized, eventually other harmful substances could be legalized as well causing many deaths and various forms of
In the 1960’s marijuana use had no outstanding effects on the United States people but in today's society the use of marijuana had become a huge epidemic over the past years. Even though it has been scientifically proven that marijuana can help seizures, Crohn’s, and effects of cancer, yet many people in today's society still believe that it has no use. In the United States 45 percent of drug arrest in 2013 were due to marijuana, but at Woodstock in 1969 when there was a controversial “Drug War” no one was arrested for marijuana (Merino par. 3). The use of marijuana is more strict in the United States now then it was in
Today in the United States, 29 states have legalized marijuana for medical reasons. In 2016 with the help of 53.2% voters, Arkansas added itself to these 29 states. Some of the people of Arkansas fought against the use of medical marijuana in their state, they believed that marijuana wasn’t the answer to their problems. The use of medical marijuana should not be legal in Arkansas, because of its health effects, like on the brain, heart, and lungs, the risk of becoming addictive, and the altered perception (“Legalizing Recreational Marijuana”). Also, the laws haven’t been set with the usage of marijuana, with employment and working while on the drug.
The Federal Statute governing marijuana as a Schedule 1 Drugs/Substance is flawed. Marijuana is labeled as a schedule one drug or substance. As a result of this classification, marijuana cannot be legal at the state or federal level. One part of the definition of a schedule one drug is: “no currently accepted medical use in the United States, a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision, and a high potential for abuse”, according to dea.gov. However, the United States is currently using marijuana as an accepted medical treatment.
Medical Marijuana There are many forms of medication in today's world things like pills, powders and liquids. Most people hate the taste of these, and for some the generic Advil and tylenol medicines don’t work for them. Have you ever wondered if there could be a different kind of medicine that can come in different forms with a not so bad taste? Medical marijuana has been around since 1996 when California legalized the medical use of marijuana. The use and belief that medical marijuana actually works goes even further back to 2900 BC, when the Chinese Emperor Fu Hsi referred to marijuana as a popular medicine.
What do the following states (California, Alaska, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Washington, Nevada, Oregon and Washington D.C.) all have in common? Furthermore, in states such as: Arizona, New Mexico, Hawaii, Florida, and many more, allow for medical Marijuana use.
