After the Union victory of the Civil War, slaves gained freedom, but were still set to face many challenges during the Reconstruction era. A lot of good and bad, and failed attempts became of the Reconstruction era. It was a time of rebuilding, and re-uniting as a nation. Most of the damage was done on Southern soil, which caused a lot to be repaired. There was also a lot of backfire of concepts, and backwards movement of progress in some aspects. The Reconstruction first and foremost provided freedom for slaves, and more was done to reinforce this freedom, and also to better the nation. The North and South experienced an expanded economy, through an encouragement of collaboration. Many laws were put into place to protect the freedmen, such …show more content…
Overall, I think that more everlasting positive came out of Reconstruction than the negative events. Slavery still ended up being an issue for many years to come, and total equality was not reached. But, the Civil Rights Bill was a major progression, and our nation would be a completely different place had that bill not been put into effect. I think that more negative things happened as a result of the Reconstruction era, but the power of the positive that came out of the Reconstruction era had a much greater impact on our nation to this day. I think that the things that I would handle differently during the Reconstruction era would be to not provide so much leniency to the South like Andrew Johnson did during his presidency, and a lot of the negative things like black codes would not have been put into place. If I were in charge, the South would still have their freedom since we would be united as a country, but not with such a divided feel. I would still have made the South swear their loyalty to the Union, but also watch over the South in a not so menacing way to make sure they stay on their word, and try to provide the education and work that the freedmen required. Overall, though, the Reconstruction era was definitely something that needed to happen to ensure that the nation was rebuilt not only in the South, but also as a whole. Positive and negative came out of it, but as a nation, we worked together to rebuild it for years to
A lot happened during the reconstruction era lets discuss some of the most important events. Let's start with a big one, on January 1, 1863 Lincoln issued the secondhand emancipation proclamation. The proclamation was actually written 5 months prior to that. The reason it took so long was that he didn't want to make the war about slavery, Lincoln was against slavery but still wanted to keep the support of the border states, Maryland, Delaware, Missouri, Kentucky. The Secondhand Emancipation proclamation encouraged the releasing of slaves, it was placed to show that slavery was wrong and should be abolished.
King, Letter from a Birmingham Jail 1. What, according to King, is the purpose of direct action, and why does the SCLC engage in direct action rather than in negotiation? Through negotiation is helpful and a strong method to use when wanting to revolt and turn against an unfair system, direct action is way stronger. Direct action, as described and explained by King, is important because it creates an uncomfortable environment for people versus the usual safe and calm environment.
In the end the war ended with the North winning because the South basically went bankrupt and almost all men died. The reconstruction era after the civil war is basically rebuilding and brings back together the south because it was left in ruins, With the reconstruction came many rules such as leaders in the south were not allowed to public office, Northern soldiers supervised the south instead if the soldier of the south, Also many Northerners moved to the South during the reconstruction era which was known as carpetbaggers and they took advantage which upset many southerners. Due to the reconstruction, there were no laws, all banks were ruined, and rival money was basically worthless. Towards the end of the war, the Southerners’ passed “Black Codes” which is basically a law that wanted to limit the freedom for the African Americans.
The South after the Civil War suffered the most. Since the war had been fought almost entirely on Southern soil, the North did not have to face the task of rebuilding. The South sustained immense damage, entire cities laid in ruins, and thousands of people lacked the ability to provide food and shelter for themselves. The Reconstruction was necessary because it helped the South become part of the union again. The Reconstruction proved to have many successes. Through President Lincoln’s efforts the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were all ratified.
Reconstruction Reconstruction was the time after the Civil War. During the Reconstruction era, our country faced many different challenges. There were multiple failures of Reconstruction, but there were also many successes. It was also a time with many differences and divisions. Many changes happened during the period of Reconstruction.
After the Civil War, the Reconstruction Era began, in which America attempted to reform the southern states. It’s purpose was to rebuild the South and to unite the nation. Reconstruction introduced many different changes that were both beneficial and harmful for the United States.. Laws were passed that granted African Americans legal rights, however there were also many occasions where they were being persecuted. Some people had good intentions during Reconstruction, but overall, it was a failure.
The time after the Civil War is known as Reconstruction, a time period where America was trying to rebuild the country after the harsh ending of the war. Thousands of slaves had been released, searching for jobs and new opportunities, and many southerners were against the changes being made. The goal of Reconstruction was to have the country rebuilt and to establish unity, however that was not the case. Reconstruction did not provide freedom for African Americans due to the amount of racism prevailing in the country, political tensions, and the inability to work for themselves. Racism had been an ongoing issue within the south, even though it had only a small contribution to the Civil War.
The Reconstruction of the Civil War made a big impact on the United States. Without the Reconstruction era there would still be slaves, segregation and involuntary servitude. The South was the main part of the United States to have those issues. African Americans were affected in a good and bad way. Many African Americans got right they didn’t have before the Civil War.
When the South seceded from the Union, it lasted for about four years, but the Reconstruction united them back together again and created as we now know, the United States. Another positive and successful aspect it happened, was the right to vote and speak no matter the race of the individual. The reconstruction protected the rights of everybody equally. Education was one of the other successful aspects done in the South, since it was provided for every single individual and it was forced, which we can still see today. The last but not least positive aspect the reconstruction did was creating the Freedmen's Bureau.
Maceo Cardinale Kwik Reconstruction Reconstruction was the twelve years after the civil war. Those twelve years were full of readjustment fixing the ruin the United States had fallen into. The problems that had the United states in disarray were how to, rebuild the South, reunite the states, and ensure the rights and protection of the newly freed African Americans. The civil war left the South in shambles, and newly freed slaves struggled to adjust to their new freedom. Most Southerners hated reconstruction and everything else about the North.
The Reconstruction Era of American history was plagued by many problems. One of the most important problems being the recently released from slavery Freedmen. Freedmen were in a tricky situation in which they had just been released from their owner and had nowhere to go, but the Federal Government made many successful attempts to help them out. The Government helped alleviate all the problems Freedmen had from their finances to basic needs and rights, and in doing so, made the period of reconstruction more helpful than harmful for Freedmen. The events of reconstruction were helpful to freedmen as they were not only freed from slavery, they were given rights directly from the federal government.
The Reconstruction was a period of rebuilding relationships between the North and the South in the U.S. It was a significant period for ex-slaves (freedpeople) to seek a better life in the U.S. and one of the significant eras in the U.S. history that historians have been debating. After the end of the Civil War, about four million ex-slaves gained their freedom from the institution of slavery. But most ex-slaves struggled with the meaning of inequality and freedom during the Reconstruction. Historians have been debating about the evaluation of the Reconstruction.
Positive gains from the Reconstruction Era include: Freedmen’s Bureau: food, Medicare, and legal advice granted to newly freed African Americans; 13th, 14th, and 15th amendment which abolished slavery, granted citizenship to everyone born in the U.S, and granting everyone the right to vote. Negative effects from the Reconstruction Era include: the KKK: a group of whites who threatened blacks so they wouldn’t vote, and killed many; Black Codes: laws that limited the freedom from U.S citizens. The effects of the Reconstruction, which linger in our society nowadays, are the three amendments passed by congress, the Civil Rights act of 1866, and black schools and universities were established; most importantly, we are once again a unified
At the end of the Civil War between the North and South arose the Reconstruction era. This was a time period of the late 1800s where the united states, specifically the North started to attempt the rebuilding of the South. Abolitionists were eager to see the end of slavery and Lincoln attempted to end slavery. President Lincoln attempted to put in place the Emancipation Proclamation which stated all slaves in confederate states would be free. This was to weaken the southern states; except, the confederate states did not obey.
The American civil war led to the reunion of the South and the North. But, its consequences led the Republicans to take the lead of reconstructing what the war had destroyed especially in the South because it contained larger numbers of newly freed slaves. Just after the civil war, America entered into what was called as the reconstruction era. Reconstruction refers to when “the federal government established the terms on which rebellious Southern states would be integrated back into the Union” (Watts 246). As a further matter, it also meant “the process of helping the 4 million freed slaves after the civil war [to] make the transition to freedom” (DeFord and Schwarz 96).
